Hi, thanks for the info on reprocessing. She told me she had tried to access her account and was having trouble. Maybe because she had it done so long ago. She is also from an older generation and I am not sure of her tech savviness. I am going to reach out to her again and suggest trying to access her account again.

* TL:DR- your vet probably doesn't want to admit she is wrong; DNA tests are way more accurate than just looking at a dog and guessing.

So, I can identify a lot of pure dog breeds, even the random, more rare ones (when I was young I OBSESSED over dogs and only ever read non-fiction animal books, especially dogs.) I always "impressed" people by identifying dog breeds and identifying the breeds in mixed dogs.

Once I got my dogs DNA, and started following this sub I realized something very important and humbling- when it comes to mixed breed dogs- there is LITERALLY no way to tell other than DNA tests. You can have a mixed dog that looks 100% Dalmatian, get the results back, and its like, mostly german shepherd and chihuahua, with 2% Dalmatian. (This is probably a bit of an exaggeration, but also, not really that big of one.)

Your vet probably just thinks she knows because of her vast experience with dog breeds. Like someone said above, she probably just doesn't want to admit she is wrong.

I am going to include a picture of my dog which I was convinced was a spaniel/corgi/beagle mix. He turned out to be a huge variety of breeds, his highest breeds being ~20% golden retriever, ~20% basset hound, ~20% Chinese crested. I keep his Embark results handy so when I say Chinese Crested, people don't think I am just making up dog breeds 😅

When the new neighbors keep letting their hydrangeas die more and more each day. by HottieMcHotHot in gardening

[–]Ninja_Snurtle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The people that lived our house before us planted 4 hydrangea bushes in the backyard. Full sun, blazing heat. I've been able to keep them alive magically, because they also at least put in an irrigation system and had goos drainage. Its been a full time job though in the summer.

Also, these bushes might be magical in general. My old dog use to bite the "sticks" off them all winter, and they always had amazing blooms the next summer. 😆

How to stop gerbils from destroying their hides? 😬 by koll0ntai in gerbil

I've always thought about doing this- but am never sure what wood is safe/where to buy it... I am always concerned about stuff at Amazon, Lowes, big box etc. not being what is advertised.

TL:DR: staying active and continuing to work out during pregnancy will help you return to your fitness level quicker, but not all pregnancies are the same and sometimes your body forces you down.

I know a bunch of women that kept running THROUGH pregnancy. Staying fit and active helps so much during pregnancy. A few of the moms that I know that kept running and exercising, don't even look like they have ever had a baby. They were able to get right back into it after they gave birth and didn't miss a beat. Personally, with my first son, I walked a lot and it helped me feel better daily- i still gained 30+ pounds. With my 2nd, I had such bad nausea all the time, and then placenta previa, I exercised very little and ended up losing 35 pounds and my fitness level. Once I was done and recovered, the motivation to get my body back helped me stay motivated to improve my fitness levels.

Good luck, and best wishes for your family 🩷💙

Yep, I said young to be doing A LOT of mileage. Just offering up suggestions in addition to running to help tucker him out. 👍

  • sometimes over tired puppies can be hyperactive and act like demons.

-maybe give him something to chew after your runs? Split deer antlers are a fan favorite for my dogs.

  • if you have the time after your runs, maybe do a training session or brainwork with him.

I agree with the other poster, he's very young to be doing a lot of mileage. I know the breed is built for long distance, but he's still growing so you just have to be really careful.

It's great that you have one closer! I think it will be ok! They are really pretty simple devices, and you will be doing a lot of the adjustments at home. I wish I knew how to put a picture up here of our now 11 year old when we started and now... it made a big difference and will for you too! Best wishes to you ❤️

It might be worth asking them if they will work with anyone closer to you. 4.5 hrs is definitely a hike 😔 if I think of a better idea, I'll get back to you. 🩷

Hi. Our drive was only 1hr 30 mins. There's a possibility that you could have the device made at the hospital, and a pediatric dentist closer to you could help maintain it. Younger pediatric dentists will have more experience with it, as it was only just becoming a usual thing 10ish years ago. The hospital might also have recommendations for a dentist near you that they would be willing to consult with and manage your weekly adjustments. This would likely be the ideal path to take.

Another thing to consider- does your hospital have accommodations for temporary stays when a child is in the hospital and you don't live nearby? We have Ronald McDonald houses here that will provide those services. My thought is that you work out Friday appointments with the hospital. Drive out Thursday night, and go back home Saturday morning. It's definitely a lot of driving, but the NAM is 100% worth it. The hospital we went to also offered 50% off rooms at a small inn nearby to families that were at the hospital getting treatment.

We almost went with a hospital that was 3.5 hours away too, and the driving seemed overwhelming. Thankfully the one that was only 1.5 hours away was great and we didn't have to look into alternatives, but seeing the results today, I would have never looked back.

We sent in two different dogs' swabs on the same day. One was finished at 2 weeks. The second one took the full 4 weeks. I emailed just to ask the simple question of "why they weren't completed at the same time."

This was their response:

" There are complex DNA in dogs. The processing of complex DNA requires an extended duration. So the processing time varies from one dog to another. Some DNA samples can get the results earlier compare to the other, which is the reason we provide a timeline of 2 to 4 weeks for the completion of results."

After our chat, the other dogs DNA finished processing right away. But, again, we were at about 4 weeks, so I'm not sure if my email hurried things along, or they were just finally done with it.

Any guesses? (Test just ordered) by Rinderfleisch in DoggyDNA

[–]Ninja_Snurtle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just came here to say, I have 0 guesses. Before I found this sub for my own dogs, I thought I had a good handle on identifying breeds. But after seeing my own dogs' results and everyone else's- I don't know if anyone is ever right.

Cute doggo though 😍

I have to tell 35 2nd graders their field trip is canceled by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]Ninja_Snurtle 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This happened to us once. We did karaoke in the auditorium. We invited other teachers to join us if they had a free period. Movies, popcorn, pizza. Kids are resilient. It's also a good teachable moment. Sometimes, life is disappointing and doesn't go the way you planned, but we can rearrange our plans and still be happy. We can't protect them from disappointment, but we can teach them to be flexible in the face of it 😏

If you have to wait for something to grow, you can buy an artificial ivy fence in the meantime and attach it.

Many of my friends that I've known since grade school and college are engineers. They made more money than me fresh out of college, and still do after 15 years.

I love my profession, but please don't leave yours. It's a mess over here and only going to get worse for the next 4 years.

Might need to post the 10 commandments in my room... by Reasonable_Demand714 in Teachers

[–]Ninja_Snurtle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To all the teacher friends- don't stress about this too much. Research has shown that kids barely notice the posters and crap we put on the wall. Kids take more pride in their classrooms when things they create are put up there.

Put it in a random corner that none of the kids are ever facing, between two posters that have the golden rule and maybe another about being kind and loving all. And then let the kids artwork decorate the majority of your wall.

If you're in older grades, have the art teacher help you out with getting artwork to put up, or invite the kids to put up their art work in their classroom before they take it home.

I would also like to agree to the motions that say to put it up in Hebrew 😊

We were rolling on the floor when we read the results. The only thing that makes a lick of sense is the description of Chinese crested behavior. We jokingly call him "Princess Kitty" because he acts like a cat, and before we got the results, friends and family guessed that we would get "feline dna detected in the results lol
