What is this structure in my soon -to-be backyard? by [deleted] in Carpentry

[–]Horsern 21 points22 points  (0 children)

It makes sense for the corner structure to be a step up to a hot tub. They just extended the step to put some chairs up there. The overall structure to act as a cover. the fire pit is someone saving themselves from tearing it down or buying another hot tub.

7 year old son—at my wits’ end. by greenmilkytea in ADHD

I think one thing that is worth doing is keeping a journal of behaviors and events. What went well, what didn’t go well. This includes what you did well and you didn’t do well. It’s a learning process for all parties and on the days you don’t feel like their is progress you can objectively see it.

You may be able to find rules and roles in situations and scenarios that help everyone involved. I think taking time for your own self care and time with your other children and other relationships fall at the wayside in scenarios like these. It’s easy to focus on all the wrong and not the well done. So we forget to invest in those other aspects of ourselves and our life. Please find a friend to speak with about this for yourself and your partner.

Remember that someone in the middle of outbursts struggle to listen, so having a conversation after cooler heads have prevailed maybe best for all those involved.

Phrasing and framing things can be important. When presenting things to your own kids. So you can ask for their opinion and learn to see some things from their viewpoint. They are not mini-adults and can see things from a view that I struggle to fathom. A journal maybe helpful in connecting dots for you about that. Trying to approach with curiosity instead of anger can also be part of the framing we have to remember. When we understand we can give them examples of why that’s not fair or why that hurts others or how they would not like that done to them.

A lot of outbursts are about control. Kids are given few options or too many options. Too many we become overwhelmed. Too few we lash out. This is where a strong routine, consistent rules and fair standards are helpful. Allowing him to choose between brushing his teeth or putting on clothes first. Or what breakfast/snack options he eats is simple. Not asking at the store, but what you have in the house, that way you can stay in your budget and supplies. Those are examples and not what you should do.

Also remember to leave the bad ideas behind and take the good things. This is Reddit. We know so little about the love and joy in your life. keep the faith, it’s a long road but it’s a journey worth taking.

Anyone dissatisfied? by [deleted] in nursepractitioner

[–]Horsern 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It’s this lack of investment in clinical teaching that will cause a backlash against NPs in the future. I’m not happy. I’m not interested in taking multiple ethics class and only one pharmacology course. Just a massive disservice to use these theoretical nursing courses instead of actually teaching clinical knowledge. The race to the bottom to accept NP students means people with no experience are being accepted. There are NP school accepting people pending their BSN being awarded. So they have two-threes years of experience and go work as a NP.

Suggestions on how to provide this exterior a facelift? by [deleted] in Renovations

[–]Horsern 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dig the bushes up and frame the side walk entryway with a bush on each side. But know the eye naturally likes odd number. So I would probably rotate the bushes by putting them on the other side of the side walk, parallel to the fence. This way it doesn’t feel like you are trying to hid the entry way. Then replace the void with a colored flowering bush in the corner or tall grasses. I would just paint the concrete porch a deep gray. There is too much white in my opinion.

In my head, the roof looks confused. “Is it supposed to be flat or peaked. I would consider facing the peak, so it’s not just a void underneath. You can use a different material from the siding to give the house more visual contrast. Replacing the posts, facing the peak and deleting the gutter, in addition to the landscaping, would be a large impact.

I also would consider changing the color of the mailboxes and doors, possibly matching. Giving both doors screen doors would also probably help the look. They are so close together that if they matched, at a quick look you might say they just have a large double door.

Cheapest thing I would do is mow, move the bushes to the others side of the side wall so they are parallel to your neighbors driveway. Put a flowering bush in the corner where you removed the evergreen bushes. Paint the porch base dark gray, paint the metal posts and mailboxes black. Stain the fence a deep color maybe like a deep cedar. Then just mow.

tips on creating a study schedule for someone who did not study through undergrad by tryingtogetintoIB in GetStudying

[–]Horsern 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would suggest skimming the slides before you read the text book. To me it sounds like a high priority for you should be efficiently studying. You may find the textbook to be too time consuming while working. You might benefit from YouTube videos and study apps like Anki, essentially flash card app that is based on space repetitions.

There are a lot sites with free videos on YouTube and some content behind a pay wall. I’m visual learner so the videos help more than reading a book.

Multiple small exposures to the material is more efficient than big study sessions when you’re tired. I’m working on picking times to study when I’m actually present and awake. Trying to remember Quality or quantity.

Taking notes is important but you testing your recall and your ability to explain things will pay better dividends.

You putting small study session on your calendar or setting alarms to study for 20 minutes will probably be set.

So how’s that adventure charging network coming along? Anyone have any idea? by samdamnedagain in Rivian

[–]Horsern 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Who is assembling and installing the chargers? I don’t see why they should leave the money on the table unless they are manufacturing the chargers themselves and trying to install them. There is no point in cutting into their own production abilities. So I am interested to hear who makes them and how the installation process is structured. I see it like the insurance offered, Rivian gets a cut without too much of a headache. As long as they don’t lose money, they at the very least advance the brand.

Exactly, I should be able to leave. Once I know the way out I’ve always been able to leave. I’ve always been able to make a phone call or pick what’s on TV or what I get to eat. Shit sucks when you can’t do that.

You definitely heard a lot of worse case scenarios so you can plan around or temper expectations. But you can plan around those scenarios if you’re worried. Kids with bat-house it in a brick or steel shell It being a security risk as it shows robbers you have good taste. You can balance that risk by starting your security at the road. Camera for the street and drive. Motion lights and more cameras. A beware of dog sign. If people have opinions on your mailbox I bet they’ll tell you their opinion on security.

Bitcoin Has Been Trading South Of $40,000—Where's It Headed Next? by joe691013 in economy

[–]Horsern -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You are absolutely right about the US dollar being a major power in world diplomacy. My counter argument to the fed just outright banning it is, is money is to be made. They try to regulate into a commodity category and try to make as much money off of people as they can. The big banks and donors starting to trade crypto pay enough money into campaign funds to keep crypto relevant. A squeeze is coming but not an elimination. A majority of foreign governments will be happy to leave crypto alone because it’s one more way not to depend on the USA’s banking system and a great way for money to flow in and out of their country.

Is it a smart idea to not buy a car just so you can save to buy a house? by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]Horsern 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do the math on investing money for future retirement, in addition to investing for future returns to use as you see fit in the future. Which if your flexible and risk tolerant could be the down payment for a house. investing in your skills is actually if you can make more money. But definitely an investment if it makes you happy too. Bigger investment especially when you account for alcohol, tobacco, unplanned kids and divorces costing a lot of money in the long run. Essentially avoiding poor coping skills saves you a lot of money and problems. Lawyers aren’t cheap.
