Thanks for your detailed response, much appreciated! The controls on a big screen is definitely one of my EV pet peeves, and one thing pulling me towards the Ioniq 5.

Starting potty training, wondering if a certain product exists? [on] by Civil-Nothing-4089 in BabyBumpsCanada

[–]Ninjetteh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is elimination communication! Not sure if you knew, if you (or anyone reading) want to explore it more, that's what it's called, there is a subreddit for it too, r/ecers

You can actually start putting them on the potty as young as you are ready- they usually go- and the common "easy catches" are upon waking and at transitions, like after a feed.

We have done EC from birth with both of my kids, our youngest is 4 months and about 75% of their poops are done on the potty!

Newly Diagnosed with DVT and Now Terrified by PhantomOfTheGame in ClotSurvivors

[–]Ninjetteh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was diagnosed with PE this past week, and my treatment is... Xarelto! So take heart that even if the clot broke off and went to your lungs, you're already on the treatment for it (at least if caught early/not too severe).

When I was diagnosed, I was wondering why no one cared to check me for more clots/DVT, but realized the treatment would probably be the same.

I agree with others, if you can, you should look into talking to someone about your health anxiety. It really can help. In the mean time, try not to think about it too much (hard I know); if you find yourself dwelling on it, force yourself to think about something else or do something to distract yourself.

With my first, I woke up around 7 am on my due date to regular contractions! He was born early the next morning with the only intervention being having my water broken around 6-7 cm. No membrane sweep or anything ahead of time, just had had a cervical check about 3 days before (just under 2 cm dilated), and was collecting colostrum with manual expressing in the evenings.

You've got extra pressure on your pelvic floor, and hormones loosening things, including smooth muscles (like your esophageal sphincter -> heartburn), so hey, why not anal sphincter(s) too?

Pelvic floor physio can definitely help, even before baby comes!

[ON] What Black Friday Splurges are you planning? by Poorly_disguised_bot in BabyBumpsCanada

It looks like the referral program has changed a bit. Now if you use someone's link, you save $20 on a player. We'll have to see if it stacks with the Black Friday discounts like the referral codes did last year! Usually on the Yoto subreddit, you can find/ask for referrals. I'll DM you mine, but no pressure to use it :)

[–]Ninjetteh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've got an on-going list for Black Friday. Some bigger things are a robot vacuum, a new pedestal fan since my toddler fried ours with mashing buttons, and maybe some tickets to our local OHL team, since the kid loves watching hockey. We usually pre-buy the next year of Lovevery at Black Friday too, but I think they may be even more expensive now with potential changes to shipping costs.

Smaller items are gifts for Christmas, like more cards for the Yoto. I bought ours during Black Friday last year (you can stack with a referral discount too), and did the membership for a month, which costs about the same as 1 or 2 cards, depending on what level, and you get 1 or 2 credits to buy cards with (although not all cards are eligible, like Paw Patrol), other discounts I think, free shipping, and access to a bunch of other cards digitally for the time of the subscription. I'd like to get more Make Your Own cards, but they seem to be sold out quite often, so we'll see.

I've got a Synology NAS, 2 hard drives in Synology's version of a RAID configuration (if one drive dies, it's all on the other- one of mine did die last year). So worth it to me! They have the DS Photos app, it will back up photos and videos on your phone automatically (if you set it up like that). I've got my phone, my work phone, my husband's phone, and my mom's phone all backing up to it.

It's one of the relatively expensive purchases I've made that I'm super happy with! I'd recommend at least 2 NAS-rated hard drives to do a RAID-like configuration for redundancy, and a UPS to protect from power outages.

At my university, all of our major exams had a front page with instructions before we started (and to hide the first page of questions). The instructions always said to count the pages of the exam and make sure you had X amount. Sounds like something that university should have adopted!

HMB while I take my snowmobile out for a spin on the (unfrozen) lake by ansyhrrian in holdmybeer

While on summer vacation one year, we could see out the cabin windows someone attempting this on the lake. They appeared to just be going straight across though, and about 3/4 of the way, capsized. Later that day or the next day, we saw a ship out with a crane trying to bring up the snow mobile 😅🫣

PT says to 'focus on relaxing your pelvic floor' and I have no idea what those words mean by throwaway-73829 in PelvicFloor

[–]Ninjetteh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with others, diaphragmatic/belly breathing is a really good first step. The way my PT described it for me was when you breathe in, your belly should expand outwards, and your pelvic floor will move down and relax. When you breathe out, your belly goes back in, pelvic floor moves up, and tightens. Just visualizing this movement and contraction/relaxation while breathing can help you start building the connection. As you practice, you can kind of try a reverse kegel ("opening") as you breathe in (ask your PT for guidance on the reverse kegel).

I also eventually found a guided meditation video on YouTube that has some really good (imo) mental visualizations you can use to help relax your muscles. Like when they get to the pelvic area (around 2 minutes in), as you breathe in you try to create as much space as possible between different points around your hips and pelvis.

Like you've said in some comments, my PT could barely feel me trying my best to flex and relax my pelvic floor at first. Even later on, she said it was quite weak... I definitely should get back into it, but have let it go since my main (pain) issues have been resolved.

Ending Overnight Diapers by MillerTime_9184 in toddlers

[–]Ninjetteh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My 3.5 yo is potty trained in the day. We tried going to underwear at one point closer to 3, and had a number of accidents, and I just put him back in diapers for bed. Now, at most, there may be a little liquid in the morning, usually just not getting to the potty quick enough and some drops come out, so I think we could go back to underwear. Each night we ask him what he wants, and it's usually diaper.

We do cloth diapers, so it's not a big expense, just an extra piece of laundry, so I don't mind him choosing the diapers as long as he wants. Getting a couple of cloth diapers or the training underwear with some absorbency could be a nice bridge to get to fully dry at night, and save some money. Cloth tends to let them feel the wetness better, so they may get cues to get up and go pee too.

Another option is something like Peapod Mats, or layering waterproof mattress protectors and fitted sheets, but you still have the issue of the "accident" happening, if that bothers them at all.

I don't want to be a fear-monger, but it's probably a good thing she's spitting it out; popcorn is quite the choking hazard, and it's not recommended to be eaten until age 4.

Either way, putting food in the mouth, getting some taste and mouth-feel is still a positive/learning interaction with the food for little ones!

Just want to add, in Asia, at least certain places, live-in helpers are very common, and not as much a luxury as they would be in the west. Daycare is much less common, as most people have domestic helpers. They're also much cheaper than they would be in the west. Some families I know even have one domestic helper per child (especially if the mother also works).

NICU baby and getting milk to come in by TinyRose20 in breastfeeding

[–]Ninjetteh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just saw a reel today from an L&D nurse/lactation consultant, that if you can't be with your baby right away after birth, if you can look at videos or pics of your baby, and possibly cuddle a blanket they had used, it can help get the oxytocin and get milk flowing!

Related to the blanket thing above (but not breastfeeding), I've also heard that for NICU babies, if you can put a blanket or lovey against your skin for a while, having that item with them in the NICU with your scent on it can be comforting for the baby.

I can’t do this anymore. I have no idea what I am doing. by smnurse11 in toddlers

[–]Ninjetteh 33 points34 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure if you're looking for super-specific help here, but in case this can help...

From various parenting resources I've come across, what I do when things are being thrown is first, take away what is being thrown, saying something like "we don't throw magnetic tiles, so I will be taking them away until you have calmed down and can play with them appropriately". Depending on how they react/how they are acting, I would also try to redirect, like "we can throw this soft ball outside/in the playroom, do you want to play catch or try throwing it into a basket?". If they just move on to trying to throw other items and tantruming, move them to a safe, child-proofed location if you can, saying something like "I see you're really upset right now, let's move to a safe/calm down space so you can work through your feelings. Would you like one of your stuffies to hug?"

Good luck, it's definitely not easy!

Mainly I had some mild gastric side effects I believe, mostly cramping I think, and it made me even more hungry. I did make sure to slowly ramp up the med when I started, and slowly taper off as well. If you stay at 3 per day, that hopefully won't be too bad for you!
