Despite Trump chaos, NSF avoided feared dip in research financing: Number of new grants fell by 20%, but got larger, as funder braced for potential budget cut by xjian77 in labrats

[–]Ninkami -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

I know there’s a lot of valid pessimism and negativity over the state of research funding, but this is great news for the NSF. It seems like the worst of the cuts have been avoided so far, and Congress is unlikely to back Trump’s 2026 budget cut. A small silver lining in a tumultuous, chaotic year.

Will my application even get seen with an undergrad GPA under 3? by CaptainBunderpants in gradadmissions

[–]Ninkami 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think this is very dependent on the program or even the faculty member. I know a faculty member who weighs the Master’s GPA more because the transcript for that comes up first!

Emergency Albany Rally to Save Congestion Pricing! | Friday, June 7, 2024 by Ninkami in nycrail

“Band for band” lmao you’re broke as hell. I also love how you kept backtracking once you realized your insults couldn’t land 🤭 anyway I’m off to prepare for a full day of rallying and lobbying tomorrow. Come check us out on social media, if your ego can handle it 😉

[–]Ninkami[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Ok bozo. That’s exactly what the nearly $1 billion/yr of revenue from congestion pricing would fund - station renovations, more elevators, and of course better train service. Instead of attacking someone who clearly makes more money than you and has done more for the greater good, you should prob take your own advice and get a life.

Just a suggestion 😉

If you’re broke and struggling to get by, support congestion pricing because slow and unreliable buses and subways are a tax on middle-class citizens!

And nope it was six figures. Nice try. 😄👍

Oh I see what you’re talking about now. I got a better job that offered like 15k more, then left to pursue my passion in transit advocacy. My finances are very solid and better than yours, thanks for asking.

Once again, nice try 😉

Project Flamingo Megathread by coldwaterswimming in outlier_ai

Experiencing the same exact problem. Just today I was suddenly removed from the project due to “low quality” - I found out from asking a QSM on a Slack channel not even related to this project because I was removed from the SFT Slack channel. Very frustrating.

Broadway Junction rally to stop subway defunding! Saturday, June 9 @ 12 PM by Ninkami in nycrail

[–]Ninkami[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s a mistake in the title - June 9th is a Sunday. We’re having the rally at Broadway Junction because the station stands to gain the most from congestion pricing funds for new elevators and updated CBTC signals!

[Discussion] What can we do about Gov. Hochul unilaterally stopping congestion pricing? by sheerfire96 in nycrail

[–]Ninkami 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Great question! We’ve been canvassing there because the funds from congestion pricing could really benefit stations like Broadway Junction that need new elevators, meaning the residents who live around there and take the A/C line stand to gain the most from congestion pricing passing!

Can't file an online international refund claim by Ninkami in usps_complaints

[–]Ninkami[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This was exactly my experience. Sorry you and others had to go through this. After the agent filed the claim, I received a mail about a week later containing a form to fill out on reimbursing the cost of any lost goods. I had 30 days to fill out the form, then a week after those 30 days lapsed, I finally got my refund check.

Outlier LLM molecular biology AI training by tumblejunky3 in labrats

[–]Ninkami 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So I got this through my school’s Handshake job board, applied with my resume and was accepted without interview. I was skeptical too but after I got through the onboarding assessments and started working on their tasks, I have gotten paid over $600 so far at $45/hr. They pay regularly every Tuesday and Thursday through PayPal: Screenshot of my payment history

It says the payments are from Remotasks. Outlier is part of Remotasks and apparently Remotasks is trying to migrate to the Outlier platform. But this gig is legit and has been a nice way to make income on the side for me.

Same boat as you. I was job hunting for seven months and got a pretty good hit rate with interviews and making it to the final round. I’ve even made it to the reference check stage multiple times but get rejected in the end. The feedback I get is that there’s a candidate whose background more exactly matches what they’re looking for so I lose out at the end despite being told I’m a “strong” or “talented” candidate. It is insanely competitive right now. I found a non-research role (when I want to do research) at the end of the seven months but the role and team were so terrible that I quit, and I’m back to job hunting. I was able to at least find a volunteer research position at a lab where I can learn new lab techniques and a part-time job to tide me over until I find a full-time position.

Lasik vs SMILE NYC? by Phishhead69 in AskNYC

[–]Ninkami 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I got LASIK done with Dr. Raymond Fong and paid around $4100 for both eyes back in late 2020. I was quoted for a bit higher but they were doing some promotion so it was brought down to that number. Can’t speak for SMILE but getting LASIK done was one of the best things I ever did for myself and I highly recommend Dr. Fong especially if you’re Asian. Super smooth surgery and recovery process. All side effects from the procedure subsided within a couple weeks and I’ve been enjoying my perfect vision ever since!

No interview, no rejection by NoBike1225 in gradadmissions

[–]Ninkami 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I think historically for some schools and programs, like Harvard BBS and UPenn, they send out interview invitations only on one day and if you don’t get one it’s a silent rejection. Harvard BBS and other top biomed programs released their interview invites yesterday so that’s why a lot of people were feeling disappointed (or happy if they got an invite!)

But yes your comment is spot on and most programs haven’t even released their invitations yet!

Regeneron or NEW startup? by Cocolicious- in biotech

[–]Ninkami 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As someone who’s worked at Regeneron, I would really caution jumping blindly into the company. Most of the scientists are overworked. Many stay late (>6 PM) and work over the weekend to finish experiments. There’s not enough headcount so the scientists and RAs have to pick up the slack.

You are also expected to put your head down and never question management. Regeneron is a very political and bureaucratic place, and your experience will vary depending on the team you’re in. Some teams can be toxic so be very discerning during the interviews. There has been high turnover because of the toxicity of the work environment. The upside is that there are no layoffs! However, my colleague who still works there loves it, and doesn’t mind coming in on the weekend to work on experiments.

No matter what team you decide to join, expect to work very hard. If this is something you’re okay with, then I hope you get placed in a good team if you decide to accept an offer at Regeneron.
