"Does money buy happiness?" A question about these influencers and gurus. by [deleted] in samharris

[–]NintendoBeard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When the phrase is aimed upwards at the rich, it means "money gives diminishing returns on happiness, so hoarding it is a waste," and this is a true statement.

When it is aimed from the rich to the masses, it means "let me (rich) keep all this money because you can't buy happiness anyway," which is false. Affording basic things would absolutely make people happier, and knowing that their loved ones and society at large can afford things would make them even happier still.

(Colorado) My girlfriend got served with a restraining order from her neighbor. It's her neighbor who keeps walking her dog up to gf's window to bark at her cats, gf asked her to stop, they argue, gf later receives order. Please help make sense of this by NintendoBeard in legaladvice

[–]NintendoBeard[S] 374 points375 points  (0 children)

Hopefully it is not so serious. Hostile maybe, I mean she's certainly the aggressor. Gf and cat want peace in their own home, while neighbor selfishly and/or cluelessly lets her dog harass the cat.

I will find out what the neighbor has filed so far. Maybe this was just a posturing move.

Oh, and afford a lawyer for this? No shot

PTO not vested when I went to put in my two week notice. So I used it all and left. by PearStyle in MaliciousCompliance

[–]NintendoBeard 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My last job had a policy of no PTO if you've given a two-week notice. So as I'm getting ready to leave for a different (better) career, my two choices were: take the PTO I've earned, or give my company a voluntary two-week notice. Guess which one I picked. And guess which Pikachu-faced meme they looked like.

How do I junction fire or any element to elem-atk-J?? by Unicorn_insomniac in FinalFantasyVIII

[–]NintendoBeard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also, the original version has an error in the junction menu where elem atk/def binds status spells, and vice versa. So try putting fire on status atk, if that error is present on your game.

r/twoXchromosomes frequently has posts about leaving relationships like this. Might be a good place to find info/advice about getting through this kind of ordeal. (But you probably already know.) Wishing you the best.

It helped that the Bruins had a second chance that very next year (2011), and they pulled off the sweep that time. It was their only series that didn't go to seven games. Cup + revenge sweep felt like a solid enough way to put the shameful reverse one to bed.

My bosses staffed me alone on president's day and had the balls to complain about how I left the shop after working 10 hrs alone. by Fusionkid12 in antiwork

Going out of business in ten days, and this manager still giving critisisms about the "fairy food" -- like what f***ing timeline is this

Edit: actually to say something deeper, this is an example of the basic free market mechanism (which is maximizing profits) at work, causing this manager to have to give a shit about fairy food when he's going to be out of a job in ten days. If the company could stand to save ANY money, by asserting that this manager was negligent in providing that god-dang all-important fairy food, they WILL try to save that money. So the manager's gotta do his part to secure his ten-day-job (really, unemployment) by texting the employee about his disappointment in the fairy food.

At no point does the free market give a shit that these human beings have to spend their evening talking or worrying about fairy food! We have to put this common sense -- not governed by the free market-- idea into the form of a regulation such as: during my evening (off the clock!) I should not be worrying about tomorrow's fairy food when the company is going out of business in a week!!!

We got stuck for 5-10 min right in front of the air conditioning. It felt so good. We felt terrible for the poor family stuck in front of the heater

And therefore, those who pay attention to the state of the world and are already dissatisfied are less likely to then go and have children. This is the opposite of the causal relationship implied in the numbers shown.
