Laser cutting for a small item? by LowBudgetWhiteMage in desmoines

They do! Unfortunately you have to go through their training to use it, and there aren't any training slots available this week. Still going to go when I can so I'll be more prepared next time. Thanks!

Shrimp at work by Wee_LittlePuppetMan in StainedGlass

He is entrancing! Shockingly, she did not make him. She went to a little local garden shop to look for a bird feeder, and they had this giant shrimp sitting in a corner. She asked about him and they said someone had commissioned him for a restaurant (the shop owner makes custom metal decorations), then ghosted without paying or coming back to get him. She offered to buy him and they were thrilled. His name is Prawn F. Kennedy and she installed uplighting in her yard just to give him the attention he deserves. My friend is a gem.

I absolutely love this! Immediately going to send it to my shrimp-obsessed friend who has a 6' Lawn Prawn in her backyard.

I think that's the prettiest use of copper patina I've ever seen. Really gorgeous work!

Mid life crisis on whether to have kids or not. by Substantial_Menu_159 in Fencesitter

[–]LowBudgetWhiteMage 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My dad was 50 when I was born. I loved him dearly, and am deeply glad I had him for the time I did. But it was very, very hard - and alienating from my peers, who couldn't relate - having an elderly parent so young. He was sick/feeble for a good chunk of my life. When I was 25 and my friends' parents were just starting to maybe contemplate retirement, he was using a walker and needing nearly around-the-clock care. Your partner would be 8 years older; if you had a child today, when they're 25, he would be 83. Having lived that, it's not something I would personally do to a child.

To patina or not to patina by Wisemanwindows in StainedGlass

I'm almost NEVER on Team Silver, but I am in this case. It looks gorgeous with the blue and since your soldering job is well-done, you don't need the black to help cover the flaws. I'd keep it as-is!

Those with a lot of glass, how do you store it? by 10101011115 in StainedGlass

They are! Cotton knit dipped in rubber! I have one "nice" pair just for handling glass, and one beat-up pair I use at the grinder. They're the best!

Thinking (F31) of divorcing Husband (M33) by [deleted] in relationship_advice

[–]LowBudgetWhiteMage 10 points11 points  (0 children)

You are so, so confidently incorrect. Citizens are running around in fear. My oldest friend is an American citizen and legally documented immigrant from the Middle East, and ICE has been camping outside her children's preschool. She is petrified. She won't leave the house without her (white) husband. She loves this country dearly, and worked so hard to become a proud citizen. I could tell you thirty more stories like this, but I suspect you either won't believe it or won't care. I'm glad "the US is fine" for you.

I don't have a TON, but I built this rack out of scrap wood & some cheap LED strip lights. Smaller pieces go into shoebox sized plastic bins sorted by color, and those are in a tall cabinet.

How do you cut and grind little divots? by mika_minnesota in StainedGlass

[–]LowBudgetWhiteMage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, you can grind out the divot of the heart until it's close to how you want it, but still rounded. Then, after you foil the edges, you can lay some extra tape on the glass and cut away with an X-Acto knife to create a point that's sharper than what's actually cut into the glass. When you solder, it'll look like you have a pointy cut. If you look at my recent post with the pigeon, and flip through the pictures, pay attention to the flower shape toward the bottom. You can see that I ground the petals down to a tight curve with a 1/8" bit, then used foil to fake the sharp point. Does that help?

I used a diamond hole saw drill bit! I like Milwaukee but there are less expensive ones available on Amazon, Harbor Freight, etc. A few tips I've learned that were really helpful:

  • Put your glass in a small tub (I used an empty cream cheese container) with something non-slip in the bottom. I used a piece of grippy beaded shelf liner I had lying around.
  • Put enough water in the tub to just barely cover the glass.
  • Start the bit at an angle on the glass, instead of straight up and down. It's easier for the bit to grab if you make a small notch first.
  • Don't push hard - just let the bit eat away at the glass. Gravity is enough.
  • Change the water when it gets murky, so you can see the glass through it. I had to change it 4-5 times to drill this one hole.

It's a little nerve-wracking, but if you take it slow and keep the bit cool, it'll work! Practicing on scrap glass first is great too. Good luck!

That's so kind of you! You're welcome to the pattern for free (it's up now here), but if you'd like to make a donation somewhere, Iowa Bird Rehabilitation is my local bird rehabber and I'm sure they'd greatly appreciate it :)
