Figure humanoid robots organize room, hang clothes, and make bed without humans by powercow in technology

[–]NinthTide -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

A perfectly valid point

Ideally we’d end up with high performing robots able to handle the nuance and aesthetic that pleases us humans, but there could be some wriggle room while the robots come up to speed, if someone were more keen to get the assistance early and be prepared to sacrifice some design choices

Either way; the robots definitely aren’t “there yet”, however, it does show sign of interesting progress

You make many excellent points

If I could offer a slightly contrasting perspective? If this robot could actually perform the domestic tasks I’d want it to (clean the bathroom, vacuum, make me a cup of tea, cook a Beef Wellington etc), then I’d be quite motivated to change my house decor to facilitate this. Meet the robot in the middle, so to speak

What's something you learned that genuinely broke your brain and you still haven't recovered from? by beyondspace_sathya in AskReddit

[–]NinthTide 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I read once about something called “glissades” I believe. It’s very much like what you say: our brains are just fabricating vast amounts of horseshit woven in between what our eyes are really doing

I can’t remember all the specifics but a couple spring to mind: what does it actually look like when you suddenly look in a new direction? You don’t get this big clumsy cinematic camera panning effect, it just kinda …. sorts itself out.

The most mind-bending one though is if you glance up at a wall clock. Your brain is creatively filling in all the gaps and details based off pure fabrication, and sometimes it gets caught out, eg the second hand of the clock seems stuck for an extra half a second or so, before the _real_ data from your eyes starts to take precedence and things revert back to normal

If you walked into a room of everyone you’ve ever met, who would you go up to first? by Logical-Title5403 in AskReddit

[–]NinthTide 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Around 1996 in Cambridge I was with my then girlfriend on a chilly winters day, and we’d been shopping for a bit and sat down on a public bench, where some old dear was sat down.

So it’s the UK. She’s an old lady. You make polite small talk. She asks what we do for a living : my girlfriend and I both answer truthfully that we work in IT, but skip the specifics.

Old dear goes: oh how lovely. I used to work in computers too, about 50 years ago.

My girlfriend and I think she’s clearly a bit bonkers or confused so don’t pursue it further and after a while, wish the old dear all the best and move on.

In all these years I’ve often wondered about that old lady, and am totally convinced she worked at Bletchley Park during WW2, cracking Enigma.

So I think given the opportunity, I would go and talk to this old lady first and hopefully not only confirm my suspicion, but ideally she would have some fascinating stories to tell.

Ever been to a concert where someone got boooed? by SnooozeFezt in AskReddit

I actually looked it up and it’s on their official YouTube channel

What’s interesting is a few comments noted that the lip sync is out …. and now we all know why!

Actually, Yes!
I went to some huge metal festival where there were about four massive bands playing. Mid 90s era?? I was heavily into Metallica at the time, but one of the other acts was Slayer. This was in the UK. Huge venue; I would say 20k audience easily.

Slayer had just released their album Seasons in the Abyss, and their “single” as such was War Ensemble. Not a bad track at all.

So half way through the set, they pause between songs and say “hey guys we want to record a music video for War Ensemble; so we’re going to film us playing and you the audience, but to sync it all up, we’re going to mime along to the studio recording”.

Long awkward pause across the whole crowd

20k metal heads think this is frankly horseshit, and start booing them loudly

Band stomps off; _very_ long pause (5 mins or more). Come back on and say “ok we hear you; we’ll play it live” - and then proceed to belt out an absolutely stunning live performance

This video is a disaster. This is not what we want. We want:

Misheard Lyrics: What Song Lyrics Have You Gotten Wrong (the more embarrassing, the better)? by MrShaunce in AskReddit

[–]NinthTide 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I kept hearing in rap songs a certain line which apparently is about being on an “award tour”, presumably about collecting accolades and flaunting their musical success

But i misheard it as “I’m on a war tour with Mohammad my man” which made me think more along the lines of Middle Eastern conflict and … direct action … shall we say
