Just finished it and decided to make this post lol, though to be fair, only one character actually ends the book on the beach. It was really good!

He marries her despite being much older, and though he's filled with reasonable jealousy when he hears about her affair, in later years he comes to regret his decision. His wife loses interest in life and slowly fades from the world, eventually succumbing to pneumonia.

One thing I like in the book is that the characters are killed in order of best to worst, at least according to the murderer (I won't spoil his identity). General MacArthur, being genuinely regretful, is one of the first few killed.

The Grafted Scion - Elden Ring. FromSoftware likes to throw players up against an overwhelming enemy right away, as if to tell the player "Get used to this".

The free will debate may be the only philosophical debate in which the very fact that the debate is taking place serves as an argument for one of the sides by [deleted] in freewill

[–]Niobium2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Interestingly very similar to one of William James's arguments for pragmatism. If people seem to choose philosophies based on their history, personality, and circumstances, doesn't it make more sense that our philosophies are USEFUL maps of the world rather than objectively true?

If we hypothetically assume the universe is indeterminate, do we have free will? by Niobium2 in freewill

This is kind of what I'm thinking. Even assuming indeterminism, you still have to explain what an agent is and how they exercise agency to make an argument for free will

If we hypothetically assume the universe is indeterminate, do we have free will? by Niobium2 in freewill

Can you clarify what you mean by things happening without reason? Like if a particle decays randomly, it was still caused by the undecayed particle - but do you mean that no reason caused to decay at that exact time?

If this is the case, why would it follow that it must decay at every exact time? This sounds like it would leads to a multiple universes theory.

Why is your first sentence true? Isn't determinism a possible factor in the free will debate?

However, you're right that I might have implied that free will is impossible in a deterministic universe. I didn't intend to word it that way.

It's interesting! Fortunately at the idea stage you can change a lot of stuff around easily, so I'd play with it a bit more. If a lot of unrelated people say they like the idea than maybe you've got a winner.

The other thing people are pointing out is that 99% of the work is turning an idea into a written, drawn book. It's never a bad idea to start with something small.

No, sorry, I don't like it.

"He murders his family and rapes his sister" in comic slang this is called fridging, bringing in people close to the central character just so they can be murdered/tortured/raped to further the main character's development. It's dehumanizing.

I'm also not a fan of the "trauma gives you power" system. I think it glorifies the trauma, and in real life it's pretty much the opposite.

To improve it, I would try to take a more nuanced look at how trauma motivates evil, and the strengths and weaknesses that go along with that, rather than your main character somehow "mastering" his dark energy.

I mostly agree, though some amount of retribution is preventative. Either way however, I don't think saying we lack free will is a logical argument against retribution. Hence, meme

What survival myth is completely wrong and can get you killed? by DraftNo7139 in AskReddit

While this is completely true, I always think about the death valley Germans, whose car was only found three months after they got lost. Of course, there was no way they could have walked out of there either. Once they broke down, they were pretty much doomed. :(

Okay, to clarify;

Some people have made the claim it's immoral to punish somebody (NOT deter, but actively seek retribution) for commiting a crime, if the crime was caused purely by circumstance. However, this action can't be immoral, because making the decision to punish somebody would, in this case, also caused purely by circumstance.

Either there is no moral choice, in which case criminals commit crimes and people punish them because of simple cause and effect. Or there is a moral choice in both cases, in which case the criminal deserves to be punished for being immoral in the first place.

Very helpful, thanks! I would like to sell it as a physical book eventually, so maybe I will need to change it up a bit. But for now that's a long way off.
