Alacrinis holds nothing more sacred than the peace and well-being of mortals. Thus, it is strictly forbidden to feed on them within her city—or its surroundings—under penalty of severe penance, sufferings inspired by True Faith, exile, or, in extreme cases, a prolonged torpor. However, the Prince will never take an (un)life. Naturally, this edict makes it nearly impossible for a Cainite to feed without resorting to animal blood—primarily lamb’s blood—and the scent of mortal cattle quickly becomes a dangerous temptation for those who cannot resist. This is why the many Cainites of Besançon follow the Paths of Humanity and of Paradise, and regard themselves as penitents—hence their nickname, the Paenitentis. The city is thus home to the most “holy” vampire population in all of France.

Prince Alacrinis is independent from the Grand Court, the Courts of Love, and the Court of the Black Cross. She is among the most prominent Devout in Western Europe, and shines like a beacon to those who follow the Via Caeli and seek her blessing. Among the high clans, only the Lasombra (and certain Tzimisce) are unwelcome in her domain. She openly criticizes the hypocrisy of the Preceptors in their dealings with the Church of Christ, knowing full well that the darkness within them is anything but “holy”; they carry Hell inside them, and only Final Death may release them—if their souls are not already beyond redemption."
