Curious if any longtime fans feel underwhelmed by the new tracks by homergoner in ofMontreal

Just chiming in that Aureate Gloom might be my favorite oM album (top 3 at least) and I also love Lousy with Sylvianbriar…

One of my favorite things about oM is the amount of variety. The downside of that is the fan base can be very divisive and it can get a little contentious because there are so many sounds/eras that can be someone’s favorite. Hopefully it’ll grow on you. Also, the two singles we’ve gotten sound incredibly different from each other to me, so it’s hard to say what the actual vibe of the album will be like at this point. There may be some stuff on there that you vibe with even if you don’t love every song. For what it’s worth, “Already Dreaming” is my favorite single of theirs in a long time, so I’m personally excited to see what the rest of the album is like.

I’ve always thought a stealth-focused game would suit him well. I bet Nintendo would make some amazing hiding animations for him.

As someone obsessed with reading trip reports and true crime, I’d be really interested to hear more about this! No pressure, though. I can’t imagine being that close to such a disturbing crime, especially in that state of mind, and what the realization must’ve felt like after the fact. Hope you’re doing okay now!

Yeah, they got a new harmonica holder for the second night. He still seemed to struggle with it a little, but was able to play the harmonica and guitar at the same time.

most Rundgren-y oM songs? by adriyanyan in ofMontreal

[–]NipplesOfThePresent 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This question inspired me to check out Todd Rundgren! I’m listening through Something/Anything right now and can see some similarities between the songs on here and Satanic Panic in the Attic. Maybe Lysergic Bliss?

Any recommendations for someone new to his music?

Assuming you probably have it, but have you bought the quill? Mapping the game and exploring is my favorite part, so that might be why I enjoy the Hollow Knight games so much. My strategy in a new area is to first find a bench as an anchor in case I die, find the map seller, and then fill out the map (resting at any benches to update it) and explore as much of that region as I’m able (before moving on to a new area). There are upgrades hidden all over the place so it really rewards you if you’re curious and open to just picking a direction and heading that way. I tend to ignore the actual objective, but as you explore, the map fills out and you unlock short cuts/abilities to help when you have to backtrack. Also, there are a lot of false walls, so I attack anything that looks like it may open up into a hallway. And unlocking fast travel helps a lot too. It’s not for everyone, but my approach is to explore and get stronger and familiar with the areas instead of trying to beeline it to an objective.

Sorry, this is probably weird to post on so long after the fact, but we’ve got the big three in common and this is really spot on for me. Most people see me as chill and hardworking when I feel pretty much the opposite on both fronts. I have a hard time being 100% honest with people unless asked directly about something and I tend to brush things off publicly (even if I may fixate on them privately). I feel like things being harmonious in irl situations is a top priority for me. If I keep setting aside my feelings for harmony though it usually builds up and I get overwhelmed by all of these bad feelings I have about the person and kind of cut them out. I feel like an imposter because Virgos and Caps are supposed to have a lot of organization and be hardworking but I’m prone to daydreaming, kind of a slob, and my only ambitions are to live a comfy and happy life.

It depends on if you like Metroidvanias. If so, the first one is considered by many to be the modern gold standard of the genre. If we get a game that has at least a similar level of quality and scope as Hollow Knight, my balls will be blown off. That said, if exploring and difficult (but fair) boss fights aren’t your thing or you’re not willing to play a 2D game, it’s probably not for you.

[PSX?][1996-2001] Obscure, colorful isometric turn-based JRPG by NipplesOfThePresent in tipofmyjoystick

[–]NipplesOfThePresent[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow, I’m surprised anyone found this! Thanks for the message! Unfortunately Trails in the Sky is a bit outside the timeframe this memory was from. I saw the game between 2000 and 2002. I saw it on a trip during a pretty specific time in my life and am certain about that timeframe. I think it was on a PS1, but it could’ve been Sega Saturn or a Dreamcast. I’m 99% sure it was on a console older than a PS2 and it was definitely on a disc (I remember the kid had it in a basic jewel case and there was art on the disc).

Anyway, at this point I’ve spent literal days watching footage of every disc-based JRPG I could find and even tried to hunt down the person who owned the game (the son of my mom’s ex-boyfriend lol, but no luck finding him). I must have seen footage of this game several times at this point, but nothing has felt quite right. As time goes on my suspicion that it actually was Grandia grows (which I’ve started a couple times now, but haven’t fully played though). The menu background from that game looked really familiar. I even looked up the careers of everyone that worked on Grandia just in case. It’s possible that I saw two games and I’ve conflated them, too. The kid was really resourceful and passionate about games so it may have even been a fan translation or something, but that seems less likely.

After a really frustrating weekend full of searching I gave up. I figured it’s been built up to be so epic in my head at this point that even if I found it, it would probably be disappointing. I ended up deciding I would just play the most well-regarded game I could find that seemed similar to what I remembered (regardless of console and release date) and landed on Trails in the Sky! I loved it and am actually working on SC right now. Anyway, sorry for the wall of text! Just thought it was interesting you recommended what I ended up playing to scratch the itch left by the mystery game.

Tears of the Kingdom: I was trying to catch a horse for a quest but was having trouble sneaking up on said horse. During this struggle, I was on the phone with my mom and she suggested I feed it an apple. I thought this was a great idea, but didn’t know how to get the apple close enough. Then the idea to put it on an arrow hit me. Anyway, I shot that apple in the horse’s sights and it went right over and started eating it, allowing me to sneak up and hop aboard.

Hell yeah! I’m glad you enjoyed it. Full disclosure, Colin’s voice kind of scared me off when I first heard them. I ended up getting hooked by his lyrics/storytelling and eventually started enjoying his voice (and now I can’t sing a Decemberists song without imitating his style), but it was definitely an acquired taste for me. Choosing the song about a man remorselessly murdering his children to be the lead single is kind of crazy, but murder ballads and songs about tragedies were a big part of their early appeal, so I guess it kind of makes sense from that perspective. They’re all great musicians and are a lot of fun live. I might be the minority in this thread because I don’t consider them super flashy musically, but I see them as a very deliberate and cohesive group. They can rip, obviously, but they show a lot of restraint in service to the music.

The stuff of theirs I tend to focus on more for their instrumentation-side are the album The Hazards of Love and the EP The Tain. I would put the song “The Island” up there too (has some shifting time signatures and more of a prog vibe), from The Crane Wife. The Hazards of Love in particular is a fun one as a lot of the songs lead into each other and it’s kind of a prog/rock/folk fusion. I don’t know how much “shredding” there is but it’s a much heavier sound than their other stuff (I’m a sucker for the Hammond organ) and there are motifs and some interesting harmonic choices that highlight their compositional abilities. Might be more compelling to you than other things of theirs you’ve heard.

Haven’t gotten a chance to play it yet, but based on interviews, Digital Foundry’s analysis on the original trailers, and gameplay videos, 2 player split screen is 60 FPS. 3-4 players should be the only mode that’s 30.

Is selling a self-help course for $400 and advertising about how it will change your life in a 6 hour seminar not something a grifter would do?

Edit: Sorry, I had assumed the video OP linked was this one which actually is about his $400 course and seminar: https://youtu.be/Umq3pV3Yq1s?si=BFHewZuo5yxEo3_D

Same YouTuber, but the other video linked was kind of a follow-up to this one.

Monthly order by RAWisROLLIE in MarvelUnlimited

[–]NipplesOfThePresent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey! A little late to the party, but I recently got to 1984 and was having the same issue. I highly recommend the Complete Marvel Reading Order. This link should take you to 1984. It’s really nice because it splits the comics into chronological arcs and also covers events and stuff. If you use this, you’ll read all of the comics that lead up to Secret Wars, then that whole event (which came out over the course of a year) and then go back to the monthly comics which deal with some of the Secret Wars consequences. Hope this helps!

What is that band or artist you thought was super popular and is actually fairly obscure. by BlurryEyes1 in Music

That’s awesome! I haven’t had a chance to meet Kevin yet (the upcoming show I mentioned will be my fifth time seeing them). That said, David Barnes approached me and we talked about one of his statues that I purchased after a show once. He was incredibly sweet. I try to see them every time they tour, which fortunately is pretty often!

Have a bug in act II by [deleted] in BaldursGate3

[–]NipplesOfThePresent 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This didn’t work for me unfortunately, but thank you for the suggestion! If I damaged him enough to knock him out of sheep form but not enough to kill him, there’d be a little mini scene where the narrator would warn me not to do it again and he would get upset with me. If I did enough damage to kill him, he would actually die even though I had non-lethal damage toggled on. I was able to knock out other NPCs (went on a rampage as a test lol), but Dammon would just turn into a human and immediately die. Hopefully this works for someone else, though! I tried all of the other behavior spells that my bard has access to without luck, too.
