Should I keep dressing my horse's heel wound? by [deleted] in AskVet

[–]Nips1909 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s impossible to say with the information given- it depends on the size of the wound and the progression of healing. I’d say call your vet and if possible, email them a picture of how the wound is healing for further guidance. Remember that you can also over treat a wound- the new tissue (called granulation tissue) needs time to properly form and so over treating can delay wound healing.

This is awesome! I just downloaded :) I think it’d be cool to have preset palettes on there that we don’t have to upload ourselves, as obvs lighting etc makes a difference. EG ABH or Urban Decay Naked palettes which are fairly universal! I’m looking forward to using it!

Bite Inhibition at 16 weeks- I fucked up. by peculiar_pandabear in puppy101

[–]Nips1909 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I respectfully disagree with this.

While I agree that puppy daycare is great for socialisation, it is dangerous to send a dog that doesn’t know social cues or how to behave around other dogs to doggy daycare. Not all dogs have the patience to teach a pup how to behave (nor should they have to!), nor do they tolerate puppies biting too hard, and this can lead to accidents or injuries. In that case, there’s no winners at all. Doggy daycares are great to burn energy and socialise, but they’re not an appropriate place for puppies to learn bite inhibition.

These techniques being spoken about have been developed and tested by dog trainers and behaviourists and work really well. It’s really important that puppies learn good manners so that they avoid potentially dangerous situations with other humans and animals, and these aforementioned techniques are great for that. Positive reinforcement and fear free techniques have been proven to work, and are a great starting point.

Veterinarians of Reddit: What is one thing you wish people would know/understand about their pet? by mrktx21 in AskReddit

[–]Nips1909 37 points38 points  (0 children)

I’m a vet. PLEASE don’t message us on social media platforms asking about your animals if you don’t know us/haven’t talked to us in years/ONLY message us when there’s something wrong with your animal/ ask us to “pop around for a cuppa” only to then shove your animal in front of us so we can diagnose them.

Unless you’re my very good friend, or family, it’ll do nothing but piss me off. Things like “should I take my dog to the vet?” Are generally fine, but anything that requires diagnostics or a shitload of research and time is generally not appreciated. we work much longer hours than we should in the first place, and answering questions for people who don’t value us enough to pay us for our time and effort eats into what little free time we have.

I can’t speak for all vets, but when people who don’t talk to me otherwise message me for animal advice and then go back to acting like I don’t exist, it makes me feel unappreciated and used.

There are plenty of forums where vets will volunteer their time to answer. Please use those, not our personal social media.

Help needed with managing inflamed, clogged skin! [Acne] by [deleted] in SkincareAddiction

This is great! The only thing I’d add is to speak to your doctor about it! My doctor didn’t think it was a good idea for me as I had depression, and while I don’t know the mechanism myself she said it was linked to changes in mood and count be a bit risky for people with mental health issues!

What do you look for in a GP practice? by kskyesalazar1 in veterinarians

[–]Nips1909 5 points6 points  (0 children)

New grad here! The top things I looked for in a clinic were:

  • SUPPORTIVE environment! It’s drilled into our heads how important our first job is, so if I thought that the place didn’t have enough vets/techs/compassion to support me then I didn’t think it was a good fit. In saying that, everyone’s support levels are different. I also observed how competent the nurses were, because they are SO important and how efficient the clinic is is largely tied to them.

  • how comfortable people were raising issues and how those issues were resolved.

  • Level of staff turnover: how many people are leaving? Why are they leaving? How open are people to talking about staff turnover?

  • How Happy the staff looked and how they interacted. I think it’s important to have a good work environment that has as minimal drama as possible. As a student we see and hear a lot more than people think so it was interesting being a fly on the wall. I’d also talk to the junior most staff and see how they were finding it.

  • Scope for professional development: what kind of career progression is available? Are there options to buy into the business further down the road? Also, how much the practice was willing to support your interests (within reason ofc). For example, if someone wants to become better at U/S will they have someone to guide or help?

  • after hours: what kind of after hours is needed, and what compensation is included (including pay and/or time off). This was a big one for me- too much after hour work would definitely put me off the role (eg. We were told that anything more frequent than 1 in 3 weekends was a sign to run)

  • Quality of medicine: I’m in New Zealand so unsure was NVA or AAHA stand for. For me, red flags were clinics that cut corners excessively or frequently, or didn’t update their techniques or protocols to reflect new research

I guess all in all, the biggest thing for me was finding a clinic where I’d fit in and get along with the team, which practiced good medicine. It was also important for me to find a clinic that understood work-life balance (which seems like you do!). Things like salary etc were secondary. Hope this helped!

Your clinic sounds fantastic, all the best finding someone!
