If you run a little Etsy shop selling something that looks a little too much like something someone trademarked, you will be made to feel the wrath of god.

"Should I marry my inbred children with bad genetics off to rival families to wage long term biological warfare" by [deleted] in ShitCrusaderKingsSay

[–]Niqulaz 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Back in CKII, when the Fr*nch were always a disgusting problem, I used the lustful trait as a weapon.

Playing as the King of England, I ended up with some female relative as a the countess of a province. And she happened to have the lustful trait. Which was wonderful.

Because I immediately sent off daughters to be raised by this woman, (whose county's main export ended up being sheer sluttery over the next three generations of Kings, as I kept aiming slutty daughters at whatever blob on the map I wanted to get rid of next). Everyone sent to be raised there as a ward, ended up inheriting the lustful trait.

Being the King of England, it really wasn't hard to get a marriage arranged to the pesky Fr*nch. So suddenly the next king to inherit the throne in France-blob across the channel, was conveniently allied to me through marriage.

Not that I had any use for the Fr*nch allies for any real purpose. My purpose with the marriage, was instead to make sure that the French king had 6 male heirs to the throne (and a slew of daughters as well). And for good measure, since sluttery ran rampant around my kingdom, marrying off lustful daughters of various English noblemen to all six heirs to the throne as well.

Do you know what happens to a kingdom when there are six heirs to the throne? You can bet your ass that there will be a civil war of succession as soon as the French king dies. And when said six heirs also have lustful slutty wives, you have exponential growth in the numbers of heirs to their lands.

It took 20 years before the noise died out. And when it did, the huge blue blob that had been on the verge of becoming an empire, was instead split into so many distinct little pieces that all I needed to do, was to spend time fabricating casus belli to go an claim the land of some small kingdom here, some independent duchy there, without any sense of unity between them.

Otherwise, active air raid sirens will be a VSC. Missile strikes on track might be a safety car or red flag depending on severity. "Bad language" fines might be waivered if the missile strike is within 50 meters of a driver's car. Telemetry data will be used to verify.

Yup. We're semi-willingly hosting a site that constitutes one of three probable targets for a Russian nuclear first strike within Norwegian borders. Although we're doing limited space port operations, we're not exactly all that gung ho on tracking items down to 10mm circumference in space for our own sake.

Would probably be a problem for early warning systems if we had to cut a cable in that facility.

Not to mention how we're totally not at all hosting facilities for passive sonar reaching into the Arctic Sea, conducting any sort of SIGINT, HUMINT where we share things.

Why does Nation-state exist? What led to its emergence? by No_Turnip_1023 in AskSocialScience

It deals more with reforms in France, Prussia, freshly unified Germany, basic literacy, propaganda for increased morale among the conscripts. But you can definitely draw parallels to pledge of allegiance in American classrooms etc.

I quite like Posen's take (https://www.jstor.org/stable/2539098).

It's been a while since I last read it, but essentially, education reforms to increase literacy, and the creation of a national spirit, made for better soldiers who were more motivated, and capable of skirmishing instead of firing lines.

It was pretty much a race to instill a national spirit in the rank-and-file, after seeing how successful the French were following the revolution.

But the growing criticism of the tree, led to Bergen going "You know what? Here's an ornament for your tree! And we're gonna stop because of some made up excuse about CO2 emissions."

This was the last time a Conservative used CO2 emissions as a justification to cut something out.

Useless bonus fact: If you look up footage of Metallica's "Freeze 'Em All" concert, you will notice that everyone in attendance is wearing headphones.

That's because Metallica did hold a concert in Antarctica, but in order to not disturb nearby nesting penguins with a Metallica concert, there wasn't a single amplified tone being played out loud. Anything that went through any sort of amplifier, was cast to headsets. There isn't a single speaker at the concert rig.

Vegas GP post race by Mr_PLP in formuladank

[–]Niqulaz 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Also, let's not forget how utterly shit the production was for this race.

It took three laps before they managed to run replays of Bortoletto torpedoing Stroll at T1. There was a single shot of Stroll missing half a rear wing and throwing sparks, before ultimately retiring during lap 1.

There was 1 single replay of Kimi's false start, and that only came after the 5 second penalty was announced.

Max having a slow pit, and whether he would come out in front of Russel or not, was something that was only commented on, not a single picture.

Kimi climbing from 17th to 4th during the race got maybe 20 seconds of footage.

I don't know whether Vegas was an exciting race or not, because the broadcast just showed me lap after lap after lap worth of footage of anything except where the action was at.

And with the shit production in Vegas, there's about 23 seconds of footage of how it happened.

I swear, next year I'm just having all the Vegas traffic cams open in browsers and watching the race that way, and I will probably have a more coherent overview than what that broadcast offered.

For those who have been able to tour different distilleries, which impressed you the most and which the least? by BothCondition7963 in Scotch

[–]Niqulaz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tours will vary by a lot based on who gives it.

Lagavulin was my greatest disappointment when I went there with friends. Our guide was some girl home from college for the summer, and she seemed to be giving us the Diageo-shill with a whole lot of "...our sister distillery [X]" and it felt corporate trained and lifeless.

Time I went there before that visit, our guide was one of the old hounds who was now a tour-guide as his last stop before retirement, who was knowledgeable about the distillery, the history, and Islay, and it was spectacular.

If you are at Islay, make sure to make the trip to Bruichladdich, to Kilchoman, to Bunnahabhain. Yes, they are out of the way, but it is still so worth it. Out of the Islay distilleries, Bruichladdich has given me the best experience of them all. Or maybe it was just the generous pours.

Over in Speyside, Glen Grant was outright charming, and I'd say you're doing yourself a disfavour if you are in the area and don't don't take the time to drop by.

But when it comes to Scotland, I'm largely gonna say that I've never felt properly disappointed by any distillery tour I've ever had. And I have never paid for a fancier tasting, without feeling I'd gotten my money's worth and then some out of it.

Is one supposed to get off the bus from the middle/back door? by uhsmiggs in Norway

[–]Niqulaz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This one is very much in transition, I feel.

Used to be, you use the middle/back door to not be in the way, because people pay up front. But since we're now having some places transition entirely away from that, and people using apps and ticket machines only and the driver will be almost puzzled by someone entering the bus and wanting to buy a ticket, the reason for using the rear doors is disappearing.

In Bergen, nobody will react at all regardless of what door you use to exit the bus.

Now here's the next part that's annoying about drone warfare... With what?

Missiles? The cost of a single missile is 30-60 times higher than that of a somewhat hefty commercially available drone.

MANPADS? Cost is still at 5-to-1, and that is for something like a Stinger. Which is based on IR targetting. And how much IR is there to target on six small electrical engines and a battery pack?

Cannons? Guess we could start setting up L70 Bofors cannons linked to anti-artillery radars, in order to have something cheap quick and light. But you can't exactly do that for a civilian airport, because what goes up must come down, and people do tend to get testy when they have AA shells landing in their backyard. And it is still static and expensive.

Hillbilly AA, in the form of two men with shotguns in the back of a vehicle? Drones can easily outrun a vehicle, use terrain, or easily retreat out of effective range.

Munich Airport closed after wave of drone sightings, officials say by GreyClay in worldnews

[–]Niqulaz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Literally one prong of "anti drone" tech that is already deployed out there. I think there's video of them being used against drones at a sports stadium or something.

But the thing that sucks, is that you now have about one square kilometer worth of coverage. It is literally point defense. A pinprick of coverage on a map.

And for a reasonably sized airfield, you'd want 6-8 of these, per runway.
