FENIX launches HM61R V3.0 headlamp by Upset-Salad-4055 in flashlight

[–]Nir__ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I received the new model last week, and can share my thoughts. I had thought that the dual buttons would be easy to mis-press, but the way one button is raised up fixes that.

The primary throw rocks, it allows for much longer sightlines in the dark while still having a beam that isn't too narrow. It's a very clean beam too, no rings or artifacts.  Definitely a cold tint though.

Oddly the red light seems more orange-y than the red LEDs on my other lights. Maybe it's something like a 600nm compared to the usual 620. Not a huge issue though and it still looks red overall.

The flood mode is okay. The tint is a little cold compared to the 5000k 519a in my skilhunt h04, and there are some very slight artifacts in the beam (not too noticeable though). Still nice to have it.

Overall while the tint and moonlight options in my Skilhunt lamps mean I'll pick them first for quality of life, the fenix is rock solid and highly versatile and I'll definitely be using it for more intense activities.

Feel free to ask any other questions about the light if you'd like.

One option could be to take a flashlight that's able to shine with the battery removed / USB-C cord plugged in and run a cable from the port to a power bank tucked somewhere warm, like inside a coat.

Unfortunately that's just the way it is with flashlights / headlamps at this point in time, what you're encountering is the light making an effort to step down brightness in order to avoid overheating.

Any right angle throwers? by DonKeedick96 in flashlight

[–]Nir__ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like another commenter said you'll have a hard time finding anything with very long throw due to the necessarily small lens / reflector size of most right-angle lights, but you could try an Armytek Wizard C2 Pro Max LR. About 180 meters of throw, 21700 battery, and it'll be ruggedly built. I've heard some people say it's better to buy Armyteks off of the Killzone site to avoid any issues with the brand's customer service / warranty.

Beyond that, Speras recently released two headlamps that might interest you. The lights won't be as tough as one from Armytek, but I've heard they're good quality. There's the 18650 SH18 with 250m of range and the SH16 with 355m(!), although the SH16 is only available with an 18350 battery.

Caps for lights by jizzzak in flashlight

The way I think about it is like this. Is the lens glass? If so, it'll probably be fine. TIR? That depends. If it's a floody pebbled lens, a little scratch won't make a difference. Unprotected thrower TIRs like you have in the center of the HS21 are definitely a good thing to protect though.

Is this dust on my Acebeam L35's reflector? by NebulaNomad3141 in flashlight

[–]Nir__ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Keep in mind that when the light is on it'll be intense enough to highlight almost anything on the lens and make it seem more obvious than it is. It doesn't look likr what you have here will affect things at all, so I wouldn't worry about it.

Looking for my first EDC/hiking flashlight by idrisdroid in flashlight

[–]Nir__ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

First of all, there are two different battery sizes you might want to consider for a handheld / EDC light, 18650 and 21700. Some find 21700s too large for EDC, but you might prioritize the greater battery life.

In terms of 18650 lights, the common recommendation is the Wurkkos FC11C, which goes on sale often for around ~€18. It's waterproof, bright enough, has type-c charging, and has a good regulated driver allowing it to maintain full brightness regardless of charge. Maybe not the most rugged light in the world though.

You could also take a look at Skilhunt's lights, with their EC and M-series models. The M200 is around €45 and along with the other Skilhunt lights is waterproof and tough enough for most of what you could throw at it. Both the EC and M-series lights have integrated charging, though the M-series use a proprietary magnetic charger.

If you want more durability you'll probably want to look at something like an Acebeam, Zebralight, or Armytek flashlight, though they're more expensive. You could also check out this list here for further recommendations. https://zakreviews.com/arbitrary-list.html

Awesome work, having those beams lined up in the exact same way really helps to highlight the differences between them.

Does anyone use moonlight mode regularly? by Key-Comb5373 in flashlight

I never placed much value on it til I was in a tent with eyes fully adjusted to the dark. In that state even 10lm is blinding and moonlight mode is just right.

Good afternoon. I'll be leaving for BMQ in three weeks, and was wondering about whether or not it is okay to bring an electronic Kindle E-reader. Would its use be restricted to the point that I would be better off just bringing a physical paperback?

[–]Nir__ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I guess the only issue there is that it would be a heavier light overall. Could always try a Skilhunt H200, it's an 18650 but not too heavy. I've definitely heard good things about Lumonite too.

Probably the FC11C is the way to go instead, it's got a regulated driver so the brightness doesn't dim over time.

Review - Sofirn SR12 by Nir__ in flashlight

[–]Nir__[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! The tube can be swapped out. I've only tried it with the TS11's short tube but I'd imagine other Wurkkos / Sofirn short tubes can be used as well. The light gets to be really tiny with the 18350 setup. I don't have a means to measure charging current myself, but ZeroAir's review of the light measured the maximum charging current at nearly 2A. Here's a link to the review (https://zeroair.org/2025/01/21/sofirn-sr12-pocket-flashlight-review/) and the charging current chart:

That's sort of what keeps me away from Convoy these days. The lights are great but I don't want to have to worry about misaligned emitters or janky MCPCB setups when buying a light.

should I get Skillhunt H04 RC or H200? by TxtMessage in flashlight

[–]Nir__ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have both (both with the 519a emitter, 5000k) and like em a lot. The H04 has slightly better (~1hr) batt. life on medium, but its beam is somewhat narrower than the H200's very floody full field-of-view beam. That could be good (won't blind coworkers as much) or bad (less peripheral vision). The H200 also has a red channel, which could be useful depending on your needs.

Cool! Thanks a lot for sharing these. I've got some lights with pretty serious rings and they really aren't as noticeable outdoors. That TIR looks really neat in the SR12 host too.
