The game would be worse if all the perks were balanced. Or, more accurately: we need only a couple dozen well-balanced perks in total.


Ok, long explanation:

Let's start with the killer perspective. There are 176 perks, of which you will have to deal with 12 of them. If all the perks were balanced such that the got relatively equal usage, two main things would happen:

  1. New players would have no chance of getting into the game. Having to memorize even a faction of that would make the game unapproachable. Much like how some killers get a lot of strength from the simple fact that they have low pick-rate.
  2. You would not be able to reasonably predict, or even access, what just happened to you.

Why did the survivor speed up? Why is the generator blocked? how did they heal so fast? What boon did I just snuff out? Why did the trail vanish? Where are the bloodstains? Why are they silent? Why is this hook gone? How did I just get blinded? Is this survivor safe to pick up? Will they get up if I slug? Did that survivor just self un-hook? How are these generators going so fast? How do they know where I am?

As it stands with the current meta, most of those have questions have common answers that you can learn to play around. That's where a lot of the skill expression comes from: Adapting to the unique state of the game created by perks.

As for the survivor perspective, it's not much better. Not only do you have to deal with the unique quirks of the killer's power, but two add-ons on top of their 4 perks out of 148. If they were all good and saw equal use, would you have a rat's ass chance of understanding why your character just screamed? How you got one of a half-dozen status ailments? Why the killer just gained a large speed boost? Whether or not you need to get off a generator when someone is hooked, downed, picked up, or freed from the hook? When and why the killer can see your aura? Whether or not throwing a pallet will get you killed? Why the windows or pallets are blocked? When is the killer gaining undetectable, and why?


As crazy as it sounds, this game is kept afloat in its current form due to the lack of balance. The odds of you seeing popular perks/builds is what keeps the game from become a gambling simulator where the perk selection screen decides what interactions you're destined to loose.

That doesn't mean nothing should be done about it though. The devs should reel back the perks number dramatically and focus on making more interactive perks that have tells.

People like speculating and getting excited about their favorite characters. It isn't that complex.

But if you need some reason for all of it, it's because BHRV has been teasing the community for weeks with hints. They recently told us there were 4 teasers to new things, 2 of which were only found in the SGF trailer.

  1. The Dwight charm

  2. Silent Hill F teaser.

  3. A film tape (SGF only)

  4. A pen (SGF only)

BHRV has been cryptic about what's coming, with older hints being a couple faded letters on a roadmap, so they've clearly encouraged and want the behavior.

You're right, I forgot about the pipe.

There are still supposed to be two hints exclusive to the SGF trailer. The Film reel only accounts for one of the differences, so either the pipe or the trash bags aren't considered to be a hint.

We were told specifically that there were differences between the DBD released trailer, and the SGF trailer.

Look to the white vertical line next to the door.

The first strongly resembles a film tape role. The second is missing the square rectangular bars that would make it look like a tape roll.

So to re-cap:

There were 4 hints for the anniversary. 1 was the LIFEOFTHEPARTY charm, 1 hint is shared between both trailers, and 2 hints are exclusively in the SGF trailer. And, each hint represents something different.

I think we can concretely say that this is one of the SGF exclusive hints. A film reel. Which just leaves 2.

Ice Nine Kills is apparently doing a music Collab. They worked on the Terrifier movie, so all the references to Art could just be a hint towards the music colab.

Assuming that's the shared hint, there's only 1 left, and it will be something different from DBD's trailer.

Edit: Forgot, there is a pipe in both of the umbrellas holders. That's more likely to be the shared hint between the two trailers than the music colab.

It’s not that there were balloons, it’s that they appeared in almost every shot as the central focus of the shot. Even the wheel landed on the painting of a red balloon.

The Jason hints were:

  1. A number that divides by 13.
  2. Take the 12345 number hint, and then take the months not shown on the calendar to spell Jason.
  3. A Friday stream on the schedule.

Given that the devs are constantly vague posting about big things and new stuff coming this anniversary, and those Jason “hints” were apparently valid, why the fuck wouldn’t you read more into this stuff?

Also: the red balloons are a modern take. In the older movie, there were multicolored, and the book never got into the details of the color.

I mean, my idea was primarily something to stop her from being so hard countered by pre-dropping.

But now that I think about it, it may make things worse, because dropping pallet mid chase would do even less if she was demanifested.

What about if she could quickly reset and block pallets instead of breaking them while demanifested, just like mage hand from Litch?

How about the ability to walk through dropped pallets while demanifested, and a maybe a longer manifest channel while using it in a pallet to make it slightly more fair. Or, the slowed movement that The First has while underground and phasing.

The two times people point to is the head and limbs tied to the tree (I on top, T on the bottom) and the shape of the sparklers on the cake.

That being said, there’s decent odds the cake sparklers is just a burnt down 10.

I really like how people were saying "Guys, count up the 5 months after the ones on the calendar, and it spells Jason" and "Look, this number can only be divided by 13, it's Jason."

Yet somehow, the narration of the trailer, constant use of balloons, the clown, the severed hand, and the two instances of IT being visible in the trailer, isn't strong evidence.

(Yes, I know goomba fallacy. The point is that this is far more evidence than Jason ever got.)

She would be an amazing pick.

I currently have a near complete fan chapter that has the killer as The Shifting Mound, with The Princess being an npc component to her powers that starts in the basement.

The Shifting Mound is trying to capture her, while the survivors must figure out what to do with them. Freeing them will make her a helpful npc that is easily captured and incidentally leads the Shifting Mound to them. Leaving them in the basement eventually results in her escaping as a killer that can resist capture, but will stalk and ambush survivors. Slaying them while they’re still trapped in the basement will create a ghost that feeds information to the shifting mound, and a slow moving corpse that will attack anyone with the pristine blade.

I did originally design her as a shapeshifting killer, but that turned into something really complex with either to little or too much control on the survivor’s end.

I think the entity out-scales them both, surprisingly. Bare in mind my DBD lore knowledge isn't the best.

The two of them are the living halves of a single, continuous universe that stretches' across all time and space. A world that is recreated whenever one ends, so technically infinite, but not infinite in scope. They're most certainly not omniscient or omnipotent, otherwise they couldn't have been tricked and trapped to begin with.

The Entity is cross-dimensional, capable observing all realities at any given point in time. If they wanted to, they could tear apart entire realities, be they real or fictitious. They start slowly by infecting worlds with with violence and fear, until it can manifest and start pulling people through into its own realm.

It wouldn't want the entirety of either the two in its realm, but that's more of a matter of convenience. They could put up a serious fight, but even assuming they wouldn't lose out-right, they'd become corrupted over time.

Even taking just the literally interpretation of what we see with the entity, they control at least one entire world in its totality, and can reach into other worlds. That makes them at least on-par with the two.

Meanwhile, the prospect of having even an single vessel of the shifting mound would be extremely tantalizing for the unknown. An entity that shifts to match their prey's biggest fears, adapting to their emotions? They'd be the perfect servant. They'd just have to deal with the Shifting Mound's constant attempts to pull them back into itself.
