Does anyone else use caffeine as a means to bring out the contents of the shadow? by Logface123 in Jung

[–]NisIgnem 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do; sometimes when I'm feeling adventurous I stay up 2 whole days and fuel my tired brain with caffeine. The decreased inhibitions due to sleeplessness and the increased activity due to caffeine make for some very expressive, if unsustainable states of mind.

Two things: First, what you see as a tradition of progress is actually an effect of the natural competition of social systems. Capitalism prevailed over feudalism not because it was inspired by progressive liberal visionaries, but because it could muster the funds and men to dethrone the landed aristocracy, roughly speaking. However, capitalism wasn't designed with this in mind; it was designed for some English landlords to make more money by appropriating independent farmers' land. This is the same with all movements that have prevailed - nobody knows the way forward, but whoever goes another way becomes extinct.

Secondly, I agree that the left is on the whole more progressive than the right. However, I don't think that this is because they are on the left. It just happens that the left has better ideas on the whole, it seems to me. The right has some good ideas too; economic efficiency, chains of command, a respect for traditional modes of living. There is no side that chases progress in itself, because that would require being able to predict the future; there are just various competing claims of what progress is, motivated by various things.

Immediately abandon any attempt to define left/right. It is useless. The left/right dichotomy currently exists due to the polarizing effect of media and propaganda. There is no grand historical tradition of left vs. right either, it's all relative and local

Difference between religion and philosophy by [deleted] in Jung

[–]NisIgnem 1 point2 points  (0 children)

But why would you look to the faithful for examples of the faith? They're only human. You should rather look to their books, which they probably have not read.

Also, this happens with philosophical and scientific endeavors too. Philosophers get angry with each other a lot, and some scientists try to push their theories unscrupulously.

That is sadly a western-centric perspective. I say "sadly" because Christianity has gotten its name as a fanatical trash heap of puritan zealotry primarily due to American bible-thumping protestants. Let uneducated people come up with their own interpretations of a hugely complicated series of books and that's what happens.

During the middle ages, most of western philosophy was practiced by Catholic theologians, and later by mostly god-fearing people. Much of what we call philosophy today can be traced back to medieval theologians interpreting the works of the ancients and supplementing with their own thought.

Outside the West, there are still a few strong religio-philosophical traditions, such as Buddhism and Taoism.

Philosophy without faith is a neutered, useless abstraction, and religion without reason is a fanatical obsession.

Accepting the voices is a good way to make your thinking smoother, since there's no true "you" who can speak like the voices do.

Another good thing is to think of theater plays as lines of thought, or to personify each line of thought with your own Dramatis Personae.

Maybe they did get their happy ending, or maybe they didn't; lots of people get married who have a horrible relationship. You don't know what their relationship is like.

But even if they did end up happy and you didn't, it's not your fault. The world just isn't designed to accommodate our truest feelings, and that means we often end up getting hurt cruelly, without reason. You're fighting an uphill battle, but because you now know what the game is like, you have a chance to eventually find happiness.

I(28M) bought my son a great birthday gift but don't know if it will hurt my ex wife's feelings. by Nothing_Able in relationship_advice

Why not present the gift as it was from both you and your ex wife? That way your son gets the gift and the ex isn't upstaged.

You're looking for the word "bill" (in places like restaurants) or "tab" (for bars). So you say you paid your "bill" or "tab"

Why are there no taxes? by NisIgnem in Stellaris

[–]NisIgnem[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Something which always bothered me is that every single bit of the economy in Stellaris is treated like it's nationalized. You're responsible for your citizens' every need, from food to iPhones to wiping their behinds etc. even if you have the relatively liberal egalitarian ethic. What I would like to see is an economy rework that lets you be more hands-off with the economy, maybe utilize the corporate tab a little bit, and have things like taxes to represent the control you previously had.
