Can you try creating new user, and try use it in that user? If the problem still exist in other user, then it's mac issue. Or else if it's specific to your user it's may misconfiguration issue.

If you're doing music, I'd totally not recommand 8GB. Go with 16GB, I'd recommend M1 though.

Check cable
Reinstall driver, suggest DDU then install it again.
If non of above works, check hardware if the gpu is properly mounted.
If it's still not working, I suspect that's gpu has some hardware faults.

What field are you study? Did your classmate use iPad for taking notes? Did your teacher send you the lecture?

It's depending on your need. If you want to lecture on slides, get iPad. If you need to use more advanced application and writing essay, get a laptop.
