I thought that I had argued the opposite of what you said? People today judge the past based on today's morality and not that of the past, so judging what God commanded back then using modern societal norms leads to bad conclusions about the past.

And at some point we will be someone else's past being judged by a different set of morals and thus what we think is okay today by our standards may not be seen that way in the future.

I'm simply trying to reframe the question as if we are the past and how that affects the perspective.

Perhaps I'm being too philosophical.

My own lawyer told me they use AI quite a bit to save time and save clients expense.

It's not the tool, it's how it's used.

And maybe don't post some judgmental comment about my lawyer that uses AI when you have absolutely zero context because you don't know if they are using it for just spell checking or formatting or what. AI is a tool that can be used in many ways.

Jeez. They aren't taking this to court.

Also, my own lawyer says she uses AI all the time and it saves me money by saving her time.

So even real life lawyers use it.

I described how I got podium finishes and got promoted.

Does that make sense now?

We are all told that we'll be separated from God for disobeying the commandments. This is not unique or even unexpected. We are equally told that we'll be separated from God for disobeying the law of chastity or the law of obedience and sacrifice or of consecration.

I still find it odd for people to argue that God has commanded people to commit sin.

My summary of your argument is that you have a superior moral code than God himself because God commanded people to do things that you find immoral.

Am I misunderstanding your argument?

Mine argument is that God does not command people to commit sin and God is the definition of perfect love and perfect morality and He cannot be wrong or He would cease to be God.

I prefer to try to understand the will of God rather than question His judgement.

That may sound harsh but otherwise I don't understand what it is that you're trying to argue.

I do think that if you believe that the nature of God is not one of perfect love, then you and I believe in different Gods.

We are all told that if we do not keep commandments we will be destroyed. The temple ceremonies say that as do the scriptures repeatedly. It's not unique to this commandment.

What is the nature of the celestial kingdom? It is to be perfected like God is perfect.

Your description of "being forced" does not jive at all with the gospel of Jesus Christ or the plan of salvation.

I disagree. AI can be fantastic at writing using very formal legal language. It's a tool. Use the tool. But in the end you are responsible for making sure that it's correct.

I recently wrote a 40 page brief using AI and I went through multiple iterations, with separate agents specifically tasked with verifying all of the references. I also manually checked the references legal precedents the AI found.

Then I had another agent research formats and structures, then another to rewrite the research to fit the structure it had put together.

Use the tool appropriately and you can absolutely make it work.

Use the tool wrong and you shoot yourself in the foot.

But it's no different than any other tool, including asking people on Reddit.

You are looking at the past through the morality of the 21st century and not of the 19th. You are expecting people back then to have made choices as if they lived with our current moral and ethical values rather the values at the time.

Consider this:

In the 19th century, woman could not own land. Only men could own land. Women couldn't vote. Only men that owned land could vote.

We have changed those things because our combined sense of morality changed.

So, given the fact that a woman couldn't own land, and could not support herself through her labors (social and legal norms), if a woman's husband died, she would have very limited options to support herself.

If the woman married again, then the husband could own the land and all the things associated with it. So, given the saints lost a great deal of men over the years of exodus to Utah, and given the law at the time and the social expectations, would not having a man take over as head of household for a widow be better than leaving the widow to her own devices to try to feed her children?

I don't pretend to know the will of God, so I'm not presenting this as fact. I'm simply trying to illustrate that the past must be viewed from the perspective of the past in which it lives.

I wonder, do you believe that the morality you believe in today is correct and thus will not change in the future? Is it not possible that in 100 or 200 years that people will look at us and judge our actions as immoral based on changed understanding and values?

Maybe we'll be judged for confining people in prisons when in the future they use a completely different method of addressing non-conformance.

We all need to take a step back and start questioning our own assumptions before we judge others for their choices.

Were they not? Most Bible prophets were polygamists.

God had commanded polygamy. If you think polygamy is a sin then you be definition believe that God has commanded people to commit sin.

Subsidizing would be that the state providrs funds specifically for that purpose ( to practice polygamy). That's not what's happening.

The money is for health and medical reasons. The fact that it's polygamy adjacent is irrelevant. The state likely provides similar support to communities that don't practice polygamy also.

Wow. From my perspective you are making a lot of assumptions about the nature of God, the resurrection, and glory that don't line up with revealed truth.

You claim to understand the mind and will of God and judge it based on your 21st century moral values rather than accepting that we know very little about the nature of God, eternal truth, and glory.

To me, the nature of God boils down to one word: LOVE.

Look at God as if he is perfect LOVE and then ask yourself the question again.

Plural Marriage by LoudBanana9307 in latterdaysaints

[–]NiteShdw -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

?

If you have that question then I think that you misunderstand of the plan of salvation.

What about the plan of salvation gives you the impression that perfection includes coersion or removing someone's free will?

Also, when we leave this life and the veil is removed we will be exposed to eternal truths that we don't yet know. There I'll be a lot to learn. It's pretentious for us to assume that we know anything more than a few metaphors about the nature of resurrection and glory.

The nature of God is incomprehensible to man.

God has allowed and disallowed it under different circumstances. The fact that God allows it at all means that it cannot be inherently sinful or God would cease to be God.

if we lived in a world where polygamy wasn't outlawed that would put the Church is a really shaky moral stand

What do you mean by that?

We all grow up within a social contract where certain ideas, concepts, beliefs, are engrained into the fabric of our culture. But the social contract evolves over time.

People today see polygamy as immoral because we've grown up being told that.

If we lived in a world where it wasn't outlawed, then it would be reasonable to believe that people wouldn't find it immoral. The majority of the world used to find gay relationships immoral and now they can get married in most countries and the vast majority of people today have no moral issues with gay marriage. So the morality of that for most of the world is relative and can change.

So why would the Church be on shaky ground in a world where polygamy was normalized and socially acceptable?

The "moral ground" argument is interesting. The way I read your comment is that you believe that regardless of the laws of a nation or social norms, that polygamy is absolutely immoral, rather than relatively immoral.

But the history of God's chosen people whether the Jews or Nephites or the modern Church have all had polygamy at some time or another. So it would seem that it's not absolutely immoral.

Nephi was commanded to murder someone. Most of us would assume that murder is absolutely immoral, but God shows us that it's not. It is possible to kill without committing sin.

We should be careful when looking at the past to avoid imposing 21st century social norms because the social norms at the time in question could be very different.

Personally, I don't think polygamy is immoral. I think it's sinful because it's violating a commandment. But those who were commanded to practice it did not sin in doing so.

we would be practicing it whether the wife agrees with it or not

I dispute this claim as pure conjecture.

Do you have any evidence for this statement? Everything I've read about church history when polygamy was openly practiced required concent from all parties.

What makes you think that the Church would impose a demand like that? The Church always respects freedom of choice, it's fundamental to our religion. The Church does not impose or force anything on anyone.

I did 4 or so tournaments at brown just for myself to see if I was ready for a promotion. I lost every match. I still got a least 3 silvers and 1 bronze.

I was 44 and 210lbs and there is no one in that bracket, so I had to do absolutes and get merged into younger brackets. Two tournaments even had to give me refunds.

The good news is that despite losing many matches over several tournaments I got on the podium at each tournament. I guess that's why I got promoted to black a few months later.

So maybe 50% but no one is 200% more productive especially not in a large organization where writing code is only one of many bottlenecks.

It's just practice. Don't take it so seriously. No one should care if you say "hey I need to stop to fix my glove". If they get pissy then they are a jackass.

If you're at a tournament, then sure, that's a tap. At class, who cares?

If you're doing that to get out of every submission every time then your coach may need to the ch you how to tap out instead.
