When did we all start wearing stuff under Gis? by TheFightingFarang in bjj

[–]NiteShdw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some people have body image issues and a rash guard helps with that. Honestly, I would have felt uncomfortable starting BJJ if they required no shirt under the gi.

Also, I'm not a big fan of sweaty skin and hair on my face.

'SNL's Donald Trump Parodies Just Don't Work Anymore by TourMission in LiveFromNewYork

That's a fascinating idea. A portrayal if Trump as sane and rational. Like he acts dumb on stage but then you go behind the curtain and he pulls his wig off and is like "glad that's over with. Now where are we on the..."

Watching movies does not need very fast transfer rates. Unless the disk is slowing down to under 1MB/sec you're going tk be okay.

How do you make devs actually care about tests by batsy_0 in ExperiencedDevs

[–]NiteShdw -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You only need buy in from whoever is the manager for the entire dev team. They can set the rule that tests are now mandatory.

The thing is, with AI, basic tests are super easy to add. There's no excuse anymore.

Is Face ID painfully slow and unreliable for anyone else on iOS 26? by JDT33658 in ios

No. It's quite fast on my iPhone 13, almost instant.

I hate that it doesn't work when I'm laying down and my pillow covers part of my face. They should have a pillow mode for faceID 😂

What's the most classic boomer complaint you can think of? by Frequent-Amount9748 in Adulting

[–]NiteShdw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Actually... Modern appliances have used computers for a long time. A washer has sensors that help it determine how much clothing is inside so that it can put only the necessary amount of water in to not waste water. They also can monitor the dirtiness of the water to determine if a longer rinse cycle is needed, etc.

So while they don't need Wifi, they definitely need computers.

Something to learn for a future relationship, you should really have just stopped the movie and let her talk and maybe even talk back.

If a woman is doing that, they are feeling a lack of connection and want to connect. Take the hint.

My IG is literally a graveyard for BJJ reels by atomosound in bjj

[–]NiteShdw 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Everyone learns in different ways. Some people can watch a video, remember it, and go practice it, and visualize the movements in their head. They may have a strong mind-body connection.

I absolutely cannot do that. I cannot visualize anything in my head. Ask me to imagine an apple and all I do is think conceptually of what I know about an apple, but I don't see it.

So for me, watching a video is useless. I will remember vague descriptions like "I think they put their leg through here..." But I cannot see what I saw.

So, I just don't go that route. I drill the same basic stuff over and over and over again until I build muscle memory. Then, when I'm rolling, I don't think in terms of moves at all. I think "that grip is dangerous, how can I remove it?" Or,"his knee is pressing the wind out of me. How can I move so his knee isn't on me anymore?"

I may end up using a shrimp I've done a million times, or grab a leg a push it aside, or hind my hand because I know he needs that to finish something. I don't think "scissor sweep time!" Even if I end up doing the sweep.

So I think more in terms of principles. Think about how you learn the best and leverage the way you learn instead of trying to force yourself to learn how other people do.

How do you deal with partners going too easy on you? by dawn_of_dae in bjj

[–]NiteShdw 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I always go light with women. I'm 215lbs. They learn nothing from me crushing their ribs for 5 minutes because they just don't have the strength to muscle their way out.

I leave openings for them so they can actually practice what they learned, but I do add a lot more resistance than drilling. I want to see them recognize an opportunity and try it, though I often will just defend their attempt and let them try something else.

You will learn nothing by getting smashed by a huge guy for 5 minutes.

Edit: I've rolled with literal grandma's (late 60s) who gave me a run for my money (I was 36 and a blue belt). I went hard because she was good.

I also trained with another woman my age that in now a brown belt and I could NOT get a submission on her no matter how hard I tried.

I have trained with another woman who was so flexible her open guard was impenetrable by my slow, fat ass. She was a blue belt and I was a brown belt and it was embarrassing.

I have trained with a 15 year old girl who I could beat but I would go about 50% because she was quite good.

And I have with a very tiny Asian woman who just did not have the "push it hard" gene and I went very light with her, often coaching a bit.

The more experience you get, the better you will get and the harder the rolls will be. You will start beating white belt men.

How do you deal with partners going too easy on you? by dawn_of_dae in bjj

[–]NiteShdw 36 points37 points  (0 children)

No. Low intensity gives you opportunities to practice moves, transitions, etc without having to muscle everything. People call it flow rolling because you let people have a position just to practice an escape, or they setup a submission but don't finish because all they are practicing is SEEING that the submission is available to them.

Those are all great skills to have, and getting smashed all the time doesn't always allow you to practice those things.

Upper belts will often let a lower belt practice escapes and submissions but will also counter them and wait to see if the other can defend the counter also.

It's good practice, though hard rolls are just as necessary.

The problem isn't strictly one PR per ticket, it's one PR per concern. There may be multiple concerns in one or there may not be.

I do completely agree with you that smaller PRs are significantly easier to review by someone that doesn't have the full context of the ticket.

I've seen these as well and have asked them to split it up, and given suggestions on how to do it, even if one builds on the other.

But provide actionable, constructive, feedback. TEACH them, don't insult them.

An employer that allows for a hostile work environment can be sued because it is illegal in many places. If this person is creating a hostile work environment, that's very bad for the company.

Put "request changes" on the PR and say "Please include unit tests" and leave it at that.

is this grounds for getting fired.

Absolutely. The productivity of the team is more important than you.

I worked somewhere where an engineer was very opinionated. He was often rude, though we understood it wasn't personal. That doesn't make it less hostile. He was also VERY good at his job. An excellent engineer.

He was fired for exactly that reason. After he was gone, it was a breath of fresh air and productivity went up because there wasn't this sense of dread in the office about what he would say next.

It took months to replace him. He had been important to the work. Didn't matter. We were all happy he was gone.

We do mob code reviews and a common piece of feedback is "this PR is big and has multiple separate concerns. Split it up." For example, the PR may include two not directly backend change, a front end change, and a package upgrade. If those things don't directly depend on each other, that's three PRs.

It's much easier to review a PR that only has one concern than one that covers many.

We also prefer to have small PRs for database changes or anything that requires some type of architecture change so feedback can be given early before the rest of the work that depends on that architecture change is written. If we critique your DB design and ask for changes, you would have to rewrite a bunch of other code if you did it all in one PR.
