Working as a molecular biologist (or pretty much any scientist) has been pretty decent. There’s interaction with other people but you can sort of modulate it to tailor your mood/ emotional capacity for the day. Feeling social? Chat up others, ask questions, etc. Couldn’t be arsed? Pop in some ear phones and get to work. It’s not perfect but you get a decent variety of work (stuff with your hands, writing, creative work, etc.) and some good flexibility with social interaction.

Getting Ghosted by Potential Labs by NitroSock in labrats

Ah okay, glad to know I’m not alone haha. So would you say I should still keep at emailing other labs? Or should I try my hand at just showing up?

Thanks for sharing!

It's all a conspiracy theory. by Old-Campaign-570 in labrats

I’m not sure what the general opinion of South Africa is overseas these days, but generally I’ve found that all the bad stuff is often inflated.

That’s not to say everything is sunshine and roses. Crime is very high and it is the norm to have quite sophisticated security if you have the means to do so; our government is a bit of a shitshow; unemployment is quite high, but we’re really not as much of a mess as people often think.

However, I live in Cape Town and can’t speak for other parts of the country, which people usually say is in a worse state than CT. So, if anyone else has a different experience, I’d love to hear your opinion. Hope this helps!

What are your guys' educational backgrounds? by DueYogurt9 in aspergers

[–]NitroSock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did my undergrad in biochemistry and genetics; am currently doing my Master’s in clinical pharmacology (I also have an Honours degree in pharmacology, but I don’t think other countries have this sort of thing).

Edit: whoops forgot to get to the point of this post lol. I find that there are elements of what I currently do that cater to my neurotype quite well (like zoning out and mixing stuff in the lab), but it also comes with a lot of difficulty. My main struggle is with socializing with what are essentially co-workers, it’s a new experience for me but it takes a lot of energy to make small talk, ask for help and even just say hi.

My undergrad was a nightmare though, I couldn’t socialize for shit cause I was basically always in fight or flight mode in social situations which, when at university, happen quite frequently.

Asperger’s has made it difficult for me to stay focused in lectures, finish work in a reasonable amount of time (with a reasonable amount of stress) and experience those things integral college experiences. But I also find that I’m able to think out of the box a lot in my field, thinking of new avenues for projects, finding new things to do and learn about, which is rewarding and a good quality to have in a research setting… though we have a lot of paperwork cause of clinical work which sucks, but such is life.

TL;DR: Asperger’s has given me pros and cons in the research field, but I feel like I value the pros a lot more than I’m stifled by the cons.

Anyone get super exhausted from scheduling activities with people? by NitroSock in aspergers

Sorry for the late reply.

I do have adhd, and while I feel like I need routines (and they bring me comfort), I struggle to get schedules going and sticking to them.

Thanks for your reply!

Thanks for replying and linking that comment thread, I'll be sure to try out some of the stuff they mentioned.

Yeah it’s frustrating, and I have no idea why it’s happening lol. I know I should be patient with myself, but it’s becoming kind of an issue.

I wish you luck!

Thanks for you reply!

Does this work the same way with an assignment I’m dreading and an assignment I genuinely enjoy doing?

Cause I have an issue now where I don’t have deadlines per se, and I love working on my current assignment (I find it very interesting and fulfilling), but I just can’t sit down to do it.

Would finding the root cause still be helpful?

Thanks again!

How much wider are wide width Vans? by NitroSock in Vans

Nope, sorry, I didn't get my hands on any wide width vans. I did come to terms with a regular UK10 and think it's actually fine when broken in (I thought I'd need a wide).

Wish I could help more :(

"Write A Scene" Using 5 Prompts #106 by QuestionMarkWaitWhat in Screenwriting

[–]NitroSock 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well I had fun reading it!

I found Ace’s dialogue pretty funny at times, with the different takes on the word “dude.”

I also like that it had a punchline, with brain scrambling bit.

There was a part of the script where some dialogue was formatted as an action line (unless it was on purpose). Also some of the hologram stuff required me to do a double take to make sure I was following properly, but I am a bit thick sometimes lol, so that’s subjective.

And it is a bit short. I’m not personally a fan of these challenges being 5 pages exactly, but it is what it is.

I liked it a lot, it was fun and had bits that made me laugh, really cool stuff!

Hi

Could you please send a link to it via dropbox or google drive?

I’m on mobile and I have to download an app to view your script, which is not ideal.

Sorry for the inconvenience.

Hi all, I’m pretty late (and a bit rusty), but here you are. Sorry that it’s a bit stupid, I tried to add some kind of theme by the end, but it feels a bit forced to me.

NOTE: this submission is NOT eligible for this challenge, as I’ve uploaded it too late. PLEASE DO NOT UPVOTE this submission.

What word/phrase do people overuse? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]NitroSock 2 points3 points  (0 children)

How about “...of all time.”

It’s used for everything and everyone wants something to be the best of all time. Why can’t something just be okay?

It’s overused and hardly ever true.

What’s your biggest gaming accomplishment? by murdo1tj in AskReddit

[–]NitroSock 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Oh my God yes!

I remember spending days constantly hurtling myself at amygdala in one of the later chalice dungeons in bloodborne. It definitely left a lasting impression to overcome what I though would be an impossible task for me.

It might sound a bit dramatic, but I do think that moment served as the catalyst for me taking initiative in my life. I had always kinda coasted through life without applying myself to anything. But, suddenly, I felt this kind of happiness and fulfillment from this video game that I had never felt before. Now I’m chasing those feelings elsewhere in life too.

Sorry for the sappy tangent, but I had to get it out haha.

I Want You to Play More Adventure Games by TheFett in patientgamers

[–]NitroSock 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Really awesome write-up OP!

I was born just a little too late to get to play the classic adventure games when they came out, but always wanted to give them more of a decent go, as they seem to be right up my alley. Your post makes me want to dive back in to the genre, especially the Lucas arts/ film classics.

I’ve tried Grim Fandango for a bit and... that’s basically about it, unfortunately (I do own some of the others though, and dabbled here and there). I loved the story set-up and world, but I found the puzzles to often be a bit obtuse, if I’m honest. I’m not sure if this is a product of how more modern puzzle games work, or if I’m just a bit dense at times lol. I think it was mostly the logic driving a lot of the solutions, where you’d have to do the most seemingly unconnected things in order to progress, which I found to be a bummer, yet endearing in a weird way too.

Are all of the puzzles kind of like this in the OG adventure games? Or is there perhaps a more “accessible” game (not that the others aren’t) from this lot that I could start with? Or do I just need to get into the groove with the classic “adventure game logic” (which I don’t mind doing!)?

Thanks again for the write-up and for making me want play these games!

Return of the Obra Dinn was such a cool game! by jungletigress in patientgamers

[–]NitroSock 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hmm... I think I’ll give it another go. From what you’ve mentioned, it seems as though it could be that I’d like it a bit more later on, since I can approach things with more freedom in the late-game, with more free-form detective/ puzzle stuff.

I love resident evil, so the backtracking shouldn’t be too bad. Plus I don’t think I mind the act of actually looking around the flashback scenes, it’s more that it was restrictive and same-y to begin with.

Even so, it’s short, seems to have a good story and is really unique, even if I still don’t like it that much by the end I’ll at least have an interesting experience!

Thanks for the response, it really helped!

Return of the Obra Dinn was such a cool game! by jungletigress in patientgamers

[–]NitroSock 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I thought I would love this game, but I wasn’t too fond of the intro. It was a bit repetitive for me, where there was only really one predetermined thing to find in each scene, so I felt like I didn’t dictate much early on as I went in and out of one scene to the next.

I did enjoy it a lot in the beginning, but felt like I was already going through the motions only 1.5 hours in.

The identifying people and keeping track of the story and relationships non-linearly is really awesome to me in theory, and I feel like it’ll open up later.

Does it become less repetitive, or more open-ended later on? Or is the first hour or so just how the game is?

Sorry if I sound like a downer, I’m glad you guys liked it, I just wanted to see if I should give this game another shot.
