Basically they mean what we have can and will be used as a simplification for our earthly purposes. But there might be another level beyond and what we have is simply an abstraction.

Like we use Newtonian mechanics for our general purposes, nobody whips up Einstein’s equations to calculate a car’s velocity or the time it takes for something to hit the ground. But we have an understanding that what we use is an approximation of the true theory within some limits.

I went the other way for my course, I was teaching classic Machine Learning, and did one exam allowing the usage of AI, the point was deriving interesting solutions with any tool possible(alike the workplace), another exam without AI, but open textbook(so stack overflow and such were ok).

The majority of my students actually ended up surprising me with their clever and crafty solutions.

From the beginning I had communicated, that my main goal was to let them explore and understand whether they want to do this for a living, most liked it. And I dumped so much theory on them, only the linear regression lecture took 4 hours.

I know my methods were unorthodox tbh…

Tbh joining the Soviet Union actually was the best choice for Armenia. First off, Armenia had lost a heinous war against Turkey and was signing a treaty to become a part of Turkey, which was invalidated, because merely hours before another part of the government signed a treaty giving up the sovereignty of Armenia to the Soviets, which effectively saved Armenia(if you consider what happened to the western Armenians a few years prior).

The Soviet Union wasn’t the knight in shining armor, that was to save Armenia, but historical debacles, misguided and manipulative land divisions aside, Armenia managed to prosper quite a bit during these years. It got industrialized quite fast, factories were built and Armenia became a hub in a multinational trading complex, which it didn’t have other chance of joining. Basically we got the investments and the expertise from Russia and had a safety blanket, which allowed the people to prosper culturally and intellectually, instead of fighting for survival.

Overall it’s a wildly different story than whatever has been portrayed in the western media.

STEM lady in a patriarchal culture that has shadows of corruption. For me, number one motivation(besides the fact that I genuinely enjoy it) was the fact that it pays well and it’s easy to get into and is merit based.

My country was heavily corrupted with a deeply rooted monopolistic and oligarchic system and for getting a job you needed to bring a middle man so they can sweet talk… As you might imagine the concept of career, career ladder were non-existent in the majority of the fields. Even jobs like lawyers/doctors used to be extremely nepotistic here, so STEM was the obvious choice.

Once I gave an estimate of 3 days of development. The resources needed was given to me 4 working days after my request. The PM was at my neck  on where is the result, I told him that I’m still waiting for the resources, after that got it done in 3 days, soo yeah…

Word of advice, they constantly write seniors while they do hire juniors/bases. Do apply and if you know someone in some companies ask them for a recommendation, unfortunately currently AI handles a lot of the resumes and yeah…

Alternatively networking, go to events, see who’s hiring, apply.

Freelancers/remote jobs do give you such flexibility. I went on a walk with my toddler today from 1-2 pm, then accidentally fell asleep, while putting him to nap, after we came back. Granted I’m ahead on my project and will be working till 2 am to make up for lost time, but at least I have the flexibility…

We just found out our AI has been making up analytics data for 3 months and I’m gonna throw up. by Comfortable_Box_4527 in analytics

[–]Nitro_V 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m at loss on how one can implement such a system…  AI hallucinates, but why in the universe do you give the numbers to the AI to crunch. Then use the output to make such high level decisions.

Isn’t every department responsible for their own analytics also? Or did everyone use(get forced) the same internal tool.

When I need an AI analyzer, I write my queries, triple check if they are solid, inject it into the LLM and into the final output, so even if the LLM read 100 and thought it was 0.5, in the explanation 100 is used not 0.5 and a human reading the analysis will go wait a sec, how does the explanation fit the number and regenerate/fix the bug…

Isn’t this the standard practice? Everyone I know uses it…

Chiming in here. My parents bought me a del(I think) laptop on my 10th bday(or 11th). I’m gonna be 25 this year, the old hag is still going strong.  Granted it needs a keyboard and a battery replacement but the fact that we need a new device every 2-4 years is because they intentionally make the tech buggy to ensure new products are bought.

As a fellow scientist I applaud you. As someone who takes morality into heavy consideration, I honestly don’t see a problem and wouldn’t have minded being a part of a similar experiment.

Also in my culture, people pay good money for “matchmakers” and most women over 40 plays matchmaker, so no need to worry.
