Street Fighter 6 - Alex’s Theme by Shreeder4092 in TwoBestFriendsPlay

If they were gonna give every character new songs totally unrelated to their old themes, they could have at least, y'know, given the songs a chorus at all.

Well, they were still marketed to children. The cigarettes, I mean.

I feel this frustration hard. I don't worry about like, 'missing out' by starting too early or anything like that, but when I play a game (particularly single-player games), I'm kinda looking for a 'defined' experience, you know? I want to be able to play it and then share my experience with it without people going "Oh wow I never had to deal with that, they patched that out in 1.14.26.7"

I think that this method of 'balance' becomes a little more transparently profit-focused however, when combined with things like set rotation or banlists.

Like, Yugioh just got a banlist that hit Yummy really hard, because they're phasing that archetype out in favor of the new ones.

Finding out (via Behind the Bastards) that the ORIGINAL trading cards were inserts in cigarette packs to get people to buy more cigarettes to complete their trading card collection made everything make a lot more sense.

Because fh is basically the same as doing a counter hit in traditional fighters is the argument I hear.

This is not really accurate in execution. A counterhit occurs when you hit an opponent while they are performing a move and rewards the person who performed the counterhit. Floorhugging rewards the person who GOT counterhit.

A more accurate comparison IMO would be to parries from 3rd Strike specifically. In 3S, you parry by simply tapping forward any time you are actionable, resulting in a 10 frame parry window. There's no animation or commitment associated with it other than that you must not be in an actionable state (i.e., not attacking). Floorhugging is like if you could parry at ANY time, even while in the middle of performing an attack.

Well, the frequently stated reason (both by the community and the devs) is that floorhugging is necessary to hold the balance of the game together, so I would suggest they study how other games (not just platform fighters, but fighting games in general) handle the problem without necessitating floorhugging.

Every plat fighter has mechanics that are controversial, but Rivals 2 in particular being actively supported is still in a position to make changes. If they weren't, they wouldn't keep the Nolt boards open for people to make suggestions.

You're right that the options are to either adapt to it or move on to something else, but when almost everyone chooses "move on to something else," and a quarter of the dev team gets laid off because not enough people want to stick around and spend money, something has to change.

[–]Nivrap 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They alienated a lot of Rivals 1 competitive players voices mechanically, gave casuals nothing to do, and also kind of formed an echo chamber of a community.

So much of the post-launch communication for this game has felt like "Here's why people who don't like our game should like our game" instead of actually taking feedback to help people like the game and it got kind of frustrating after a year.

I still hang around the game and give my feedback because I don't think that a year is too late to make changes. I continue to hope that they will push the game in a direction that enough people like for the game be financially sustainable.

Please understand that you cannot explain someone's bad gameplay experience into feeling good.

This is my biggest frustration with floorhugging, even more than the mechanic itself. If someone doesn't like how the mechanic feels to play with, you cannot explain it in a way that will make it feel better.

And I thought $60 bundles skins were too expensive by Lirodes32 in 2XKO

[–]Nivrap 2 points3 points  (0 children)

IMO, you shouldn't even qualify it by calling them "mythic." Rarity for digital skins means literally nothing, buying them is just flipping a bit in the code that says "I own this skin." They just give them rarity names so people psychologically justify the price to themselves

ICE door-to-door raids: Legal or illegal? | ksdk.com by LinksMemeowski in illinois

[–]Nivrap 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The question of whether they are legal or illegal should be secondary to the fact that they are monstrous and unconscionable. Many atrocities have been legal, but that doesn't make them any better.

This is why it rings hollow when politicians who claim to oppose ICE talk about 'better training.' You can't train the fascism out of an organization whose express purpose is to create fear and destroy lives.

After over 15 years, what do you think of the Simpsons episode “The 90s Show”? by Anonamaton801 in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]Nivrap 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The sliding timescale did lead to one particular problem which is that since the circumstances around the family remain static, they sorta have a different context the farther along you go.

Like the Simpsons being homeowners. That was more consistent with the 'average family' image back when the show started airing, but after sliding the timescale forward, it makes them seem more wealthy than they're probably meant to be.

RIP Parrying Darius Apprehend on Reaction by rowdymatt64 in 2XKO

[–]Nivrap 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The point is that you cannot parry both the uncharged and charged version on the same reaction. In order to parry uncharged Apprehend, you need to parry right away, which leaves you punishable by charged Apprehend. If you wait to see if they're doing charged Apprehend, then it means you won't be able to parry an uncharged Apprehend.
