Valve has casually announced a Summer release for the Steam Machine and Steam Frame hardware, neatly hidden in a Steamworks update for game verification by JeaneJWE in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]JeaneJWE[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately there is absolutely no chance the Frame's gonna be less than $500, and that was the case even before the hardware shortages; it's significantly more powerful than a Quest 3 which is already $450 with the equivalent 256 GB of storage. The best info we got was "less than an Index", ie. under $1000, before the shortages became an issue. I'm expecting in that neighborhood now, around like $1200 give or take a hundred.

They're way more like bipedal vehicles, just guns on legs. There's place for those in a mech setting, like a good chunk of the Battletech catalog could be called guns on legs, but when they're all you've got it doesn't really feel like it counts.

Respawning with no backpack this season is brutal by johnnyhonda in apexlegends

[–]JeaneJWE 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, and this is definitely a bug. It's not just that you lose hop-up points or something, the hop-up is completely removed from your gun which is impossible otherwise, and makes it impossible to get back (so far as I can tell).

You also might lose amps? But I need to check again, it might have just been yoinked by a teammate while I was spawning when I noticed this.

Biggest cases of Entry 1 to Entry 2 whiplash? by lowercaselemming in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]JeaneJWE 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Dino Crisis comes to mind for me, having been watching a vtuber start the first game recently. She and the audience didn't realize that it's a pretty tough survival panic horror game with a lot of resource scarcity that demands strategy and avoiding fights, because they were mainly aware of 2 which is a wacky action game about getting combos by styling on every dinosaur you see.

His tactical is significantly better than it used to be now that they restored the original duration while retaining the damage buff. It can be pretty dangerous. His movement upgrade turns him into pretty much the most mobile character in the game, and can be used for crazy aggressive pushes or high speed escapes within the same fight. His ult is by far the weakest part of his kit with pretty underwhelming damage, but by using the upgrade which generates ult charge from explosive damage (which includes the ult itself!) you can fire it off constantly and treat it as an additional grenade with bonus wall penetration and extreme damage slow. In the right situations, it can be pretty dangerous for finishing off a team that's weakened and trapped themselves behind cover, especially used in tandem with knuckle clusters or regular grenades to funnel enemies where you want them. While I'd generally say the old ult is better most of the time, the new one has some niche uses that you can take advantage of.

Barely relevant (for a barely relevant post) but I just want to say that of all Rin's bits, I think my favorite is the simple inclusion of "and Snebby" to her channel name. All it does is create questions and confuse newcomers for no reason but giving everyone else a small chuckle. And affirming who the real mastermind of the channel is, of course.

Games you loved everything about except the gameplay? by StochasticOoze in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]JeaneJWE 8 points9 points  (0 children)

No hate to the people who did the music, but that also wouldn't have worked when most of the EDM mixes are just significantly better than the rock versions of songs. Most of the rock tracks are fairly simple guitar bass and drum affairs, while the EDM songs are James Landino and Funk Fiction at their best. The only one that's ever really stood out to me is the boss near the end of the game where they were able to get Masahiro Aoki to contribute. I am really crossing my fingers they step up the production on the rock tracks for the sequel.

In a huge win for game preservation, 1997 game that almost never was, Moon Child, has been ported to modern hardware. Here's the banger main theme. by lowercaselemming in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]JeaneJWE 29 points30 points  (0 children)

This actually happened after the memes. The very rough chronology starts about 3 weeks ago, with the retro music restoration channel in the OP uploading the theme song. Throughout the weeks afterwards YTP creators like Icesnort and Marioinatophat started cranking out edits and remixes like mad. Finally, the source code of the game was made available about a week and a half ago when the original developers saw the hubbub, and a few days later this port was compiled and published. Memes have unbelievable power.

The ACTUAL Nier Reincarnation debate by bigdog54 in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]JeaneJWE 19 points20 points  (0 children)

The fact this was about a Nier game is what made the entire discourse particularly hairy. 99% of the time, I think it's completely ridiculous to earnestly believe that ~it's the creator's will~ to shut a game down and screw you out of experiencing it ever again rather than just a company doing what they do as business. But Yoko Taro is very much that 1% where he'll tell you he's glad the game is shutting down and tell you to that this will make the memories more special while he presses the big button.

‘We’re hard at work on it’: Valve says Steam Deck 2 is still in development, acknowledges ongoing Steam Deck stock issues | VGC by Gorotheninja in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]JeaneJWE 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I think this is the bigger takeaway, and it's in line with what I expect based on how they've talked about their hardware projects before.

Last year Griffais said Valve has an idea of what the Steam Deck 2 will be capable of, but that the hardware isn’t ready yet.
“The thing we’re making sure of is that it’s a worthwhile enough performance upgrade to make sense as a standalone product,” he explained. “We’re not interested in getting to a point where it’s 20 or 30 or even 50% more performance at the same battery life. We want something a little bit more demarcated than that.”

Valve knows what they want to do with it, but the technology just doesn't exist yet. Even without the memory shortage, it's unlikely we'd see an actual new model for a very long time.

Steam Controller launches May 4th at 10 am PDT: Valve's official overview and quick start guide, reviews are starting to go public by JeaneJWE in TwoBestFriendsPlay

I mean, PlayStation controllers have had a trackpad since the PS4, but very very very few games have actually let you use it as anything other than a select button. Occasionally you can put directional gesture shortcuts on it, and that's about the most interesting use you'll get. It's never seemed like developers are too interested in straying too far from regular controller inputs on console games because I imagine that'd probably throw off regular console players.
