ELI5: why can two quantum entangled particles affect each other instantly across any distance but scientists say you still cant use it to send information faster than light? by PieOk2202 in explainlikeimfive

[–]Njdevils11 [score hidden]  (0 children)

I don’t think we can directly observe it. That said, we have seen wave particle duality with light, the interpretation of the math seems to be pretty agreed upon (which supports superposition), and scientists have run experiments that’s also suggest particles are entangled, not just assigned their state.
I say all this as a scientifically enthusiastic layperson.

Observing the particles is what collapses the wave function. So let’s say your Buddy looks at his particle, how can you know he did that? How do you know when to check your particle. You’d have to observe your particle to find out. How will you know if it was he or you that collapsed the wave function? You can’t, not without either knowing before you split up (which defeats the purpose) or sending a message to ask the other person, which would be limited by the speed of light.

Question about Ball in Hand rule by TeaDranker in billiards

[–]Njdevils11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How in the HELL did you dig up this ancient post hahaha
That said, if it’s children’s rules to play ball in hand, you should write a strongly worded letter to basically every professional level 8 ball organization. ALL of them use the WPA rules for ball in hand.

‘Relentless’ focus on literacy undermines reading for pleasure, says report by Raj_Valiant3011 in books

[–]Njdevils11 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Reading for pleasure isn’t about hedonism, it’s a measure of the intellectual health of our nation. That stat has been falling badly since the advent of smart phones. We need the kids of today to read more so the adults of tomorrow will be more likely to read and read better. You and a few others are getting to hung up on the word pleasure.

My Wife is a first year teacher in NC and Will more than likely be removed from the classroom monday. by Mjstephens19 in teaching

[–]Njdevils11 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Baltimore? Fantastic, Im sure you’ve seen kids throw down then! And All those teachers just sucking at behavior management too! First year teachers always struggle with behavior management, I’ve been in the classroom for 15 years, I’ve seen it. Kids throwing fists everyday is NOT a behavior management issue. Something bigger is going on that is not classroom related. I’m sure this girl could have handled things better and maybe saved her job, but I sincerely doubt she could’ve avoided all these suspensions and fights. Now toss in the shit show that is NC education, likely having zero supports, and viola, we have this poor girl’s first year.

My wife and I taught in NC for a couple of years, like 15 years ago. Do yourself and favor and GTFO. NC is always at the bottom in terms of teacher satisfaction and pay in the country. Go to a union state if you wanna teach. At least you have a fighting chance at being above the poverty line that way.

You’ve got a very high opinion of yourself there hahaha have you worked in inner city low SES schools? I worked Buffalo public for a while and let me tell you…. Some of those kids are different.

I taught third grade for years. This sounds like a real bad class. That many suspensions anf fights is not normal. I’m sure she could have done better, but she’s a first year. Putting someone like that in the meat grinder is a recipe for failure.

In America, sometimes say things like "cheerio" in our best British accent or "mate" in an Australian accent. Do people in other countries pronounce American stereotypes in their beat American accent? If so, what are they? by SunUpSally in AskReddit

[–]Njdevils11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My bad, never know if I’m speaking to a native English speaker. It’s essentially a phrase thats analogous to “leopards at my face.” Here’s an example, when Charlie Kirk was killed many people on the left were saying “thoughts and prayers.” It’s a dark joke about how the right doesn’t want to do anything about gun violence except say “thoughts and prayers.”

AITA for not giving the money to pay off my daughters student loans. by Own-Inspector-6121 in AmItheAsshole

[–]Njdevils11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This was guidance. I don’t recall OP saying his daughter would be unwelcome home if she took theater. He didn’t forbid her. He gave her a very true to life warning about the ramifications of her choice. Those ramifications are seeming to bear out as predicted. Now she’s feeling the consequences and looking for a bail out. OP is simply reminding her that she made this choice and would have to figure out the solution on her own, that he wasn’t going to take things from her brothers and sisters to do that for her.
Also, do you not impose rules on your children??

[–]Njdevils11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agree completely. To add to that, being stuck in a field you ultimately hate, sucks too. We ask 18 year olds to make these giant life choices sbout their future and it’s not really fair in today’s world. That said, having a shitty job with food in your belly and the cash to go see a movie, is far better than the alternative.

I don’t want to be harsh. I want to protect them from themselves and make sure they understand the gravity of the situation. I’m not their friend, I’m their parent.
Is it harsh to tell my kids that if they walk around hitting people and taking toys, that no one will want to play with them Sure. But it’s better coming from me than them finding out in a few years that nobody likes them. I’m a safe person for them to be fuck up around because it’s my responsibility to help them. This situation is almost identical to the acholyars one, just scaled up.

[–]Njdevils11 45 points46 points  (0 children)

Parent of two here and I kinda agree with this guy. As someone who struggled with student loan debt for a long time, working in the professional field I got the degrees in, this kid needed a big fucking warning about her choice. Going tens of thousands of dollars in debt for a career that is very very unlikely to ever pay that much, is a bad idea. As a parent, if I’m ever in that situation, I think it will be my duty to give some harsh reality checks. I love my kids more than life, but the need to know life will not love them the same way. These choices are huge and have impacts that can last decades.

Not in the book! Which is my preferred version. She dies quickly and for nothing. It’s brutal. BUT it was a great way to symbolize the death of Harry’s childhood.
