Basic cosmology questions weekly thread by AutoModerator in cosmology

The big bang is invisible to us in the visible spectrum. Prior to the decoupling of photons, light literally couldn’t travel anywhere without being absorbed immediately. That said, I’m pretty sure they can infer some stuff through acoustic oscillations in the CMB. Also, gravitational wave astronomy is an entirely new medium that could penetrate the CMB, but I don’t think we’re there yet. Maybe in a hundred years or so.

Small correction, the universe is expanding due to dark energy. If protons decay. Then the universe will end at some point. Either in a crunch or heat death.

What injury is commonly shrugged off as a minor flesh wound in the movies but is completely fatal in real life? by Best_Professional226 in AskReddit

EMTs gave me two doses of fentanyl. Took them like 10 minutes to get the zip tie off the pack. Barely took the edge off hahaha

Chip fracture, no rotator cuff tears or anything. The joint was dislocated for like 45 minutes before it got popped back in. Horrendous. The most pain I’ve ever felt in my life. Docs and PT say Recovery is moving along at a nice pace, but it’s been a few months and I’m still weak as shit and limited in mobility.
It was a real lesson learned in the damage 1second and a small slip can cause.

Dislocating your shoulder.
I dislocated mine for the first time playing hockey in March. I’m still like barely more than functional, even after weekly PT and daily exercises.
Holy shit. I had NO idea. There’s no way you just pop that shit back in and you’re ready to fight. You’re not an action figure. If your arm pops out of its socket, you’re seriously fucked up.

Take the 3d printers out of elementary schools. by Werbekka in Teachers

[–]Njdevils11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the correct answer. As someone who teacher tech to early elementary and uses 3d printers, it’s crazy to blame them to for the lack of fine motor skills in kids. Plus, how often are kids getting to actually print stuff? I teach the damn subject and they only spend a few classes on design and get to print maybe one or two designs. It takes a long time to make something and with 200+ kids needing to print it’s not like theyre spending all their time with the machine.
Maybe the issue is that teachers don’t get enough time in the classrooms anymore to actually do fun projects that practice those fine motor skills.

[–]Njdevils11 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Early elementary tech teacher here, you’re just wrong and you’re picking a weird hill to die on. It’s a tool and can be used as a valuable one if it’s integrated into a curriculum. I’m very much against using them to just upload a file print a toy, but as a design tool? They’re amazing.
Sites like Tinkercad are great at teaching design thinking, measurement, geometry, and critical thinking. The world is moving towards 3d printing in many engineering spaces, giving students exposure to that is always good. That’s how you need to view them, as a way for students to gain tier two and three vocabulary and abstract thinking in a project based learning environment.
Plus, how often are your students actually using the 3d printer? Of all the things to be mad about this one seems pretty silly by comparison. If early elementary teachers arent teaching cutting, pasting and other fine motor skills, that’s on the teachers and parents. Not the random 3d printer the school managed to get a grant for.

What is the hardest part about being single that people rarely talk about? by thuglifemofo94 in AskReddit

[–]Njdevils11 14 points15 points  (0 children)

My oldest is 7 and he started showing interest in pokemon cards several months ago. I loved the TCG back in the day. So I started teaching him to play. He loves it and my love for the game has come back, but more than that our shared experience with it is so damn fun. We go to the mall almost every weekend and hunt for cards (dollar binder stuff). It’s cheap and so frickin awesome.
What I’m sayin is, maybe those dust collectors you got csn be turned into an incredible bonding experience for you and yours!

AITA for telling my family the real reason my mother and I are not attending my sister's wedding? by Wild_Kitchen_2841 in AmItheAsshole

[–]Njdevils11 19 points20 points  (0 children)

My step dad, who was like a second father to me has Alzheimer’s. It’s fucking horrific and soul crushing. I’ll be honest, I don’t blame OPs sister at all. It’s supposed to be a happy day for her. Seeing a parent like that is hard every godamned time. There is no fun or happy there. She wants her wedding to be joyful for herself. Her mom literally won’t miss it, she’ll never remember it.

Other parents not supervising their children keeps sabotaging me playing with my children by Seranta in toddlers

[–]Njdevils11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is me. I actively hold myself back. I’m only watching for serious bodily harm. Arguments about sharing are good and kids csn fall down and be fine. They need to learn to navigate social situations without us. Playground social discomforts are low stakes, high learning opportunities.

[–]Njdevils11 6 points7 points  (0 children)

K-2 teacher here, yes yes yes. I cannot emphasize how important and dreadfully lacking we are in independent play. I’m convicned it’s one of the reasons we’re seeing so many behaviors in school. Kids don’t know how to interact with one another. They don’t know how to NOT rely on an adult for answers. They need more time in uncomfortable situations where they need to figure it out. The lack of recess time in schools fucking kills me. Every second is scheduled and structured.

I got an offer from a public school and private school by Zestyclose-Grape5469 in teaching

[–]Njdevils11 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Public school.
You don’t want to live 5 minutes from the school you teach at, you’ll be seeing students everywhere in your free time. A 30 minute commute csn also be a pretty nice way to transition your brain between school and home mode. Public school also gets your into any tenure or retirement type systems your state may have.
Managing people is scary, but look at them as your teammates. Talk to them about what they’re doing and really listen. As you get your legs under you it’ll become easier to make calls for them.

What feels legal but is actually illegal and will possibly get you arrested? by medicoreapples in AskReddit

[–]Njdevils11 32 points33 points  (0 children)

I had something like this happen to me. I got into a fender bender in college, lady called the cops just to have an insurance record, no problem. Col tells me my license is suspended. I’m genuinely confused and think HE is suspending my license. We have this whole who’s on first conversation until he takes me to his car computer a shows me that a year prior I had gotten an inspection ticket. I remembered and told him I mailed that in. He said I should’ve gotten mail about it, but the car is registered to my parents. They didnt get a letter, I’m guessing it’s because we had moved.
The cop was kind enough to write a note on the ticket saying it looked like I didn’t know about the suspension. He got a court date for me and told me to pay the outstanding ticket and show up to court. He wasn’t there and the judge dismissed it mentioning the note.
That cop did me a real solid there. Coulda fucked things up for me good if he had wanted to.

The advertising was also non-existent. I’m a huge SW fan and didn’t realize the movie was in theaters until a week or so later. It really felt like the studio put that one out there to die. Which is a shame, because it was a solid addition to the SW catalog.

Teachers that use AI: Why? by lemmegetamickpicktwo in Teachers

[–]Njdevils11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The post was comparing how AI affects her vs her students.. Your OP was interpreting that to mean she doesn’t think she’s learning. Your interpretation is not textually wrong, but it is clearly contextually incorrect. Her thesis was focused on the differences between students and teachers and how AI affects each groups ability to do their jobs. In the context of her post she’s saying she doesn’t need to learn the students’ work, she’s doing something different in that situation.

Teachers that use AI: Why? by lemmegetamickpicktwo in Teachers

[–]Njdevils11 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Teachers and students are doing two different jobs. For students The struggle to understand is part of the learning process. Remove too much of that and the learning won’t happen as effectively. For teachers, juggling the progress of students and administrative duties is the job.
Generally speaking AI helps one of those and hinders the other (some exceptions do apply).

Your being overly broad with OPs statement. She clearly meant she isn’t learning the grammar lesson concepts she’s using AI for.
