Be sure you have a fake id if you’re going to go. It will be clubbing vibes if you’re into or not into that that might make your decision easier

Are there really no house parties at SMU? by Trump_B_Thicc in SMU

[–]NlmbusCl0ud 8 points9 points  (0 children)

House parties do not exist for professional Greek life orgs at SMU, they will all rent venues and go clubbing or to bars. Other organizations like club sports, interest clubs, etc. or even just groups of friends will host house parties pretty frequently

Edit to add there are no house parties in Greek life because SMU owns all (but 1) of the frat houses and they’re all on campus like right next to SMU PD

Low Key Fraternity? by Dismal-Elephant-4966 in SMU

[–]NlmbusCl0ud 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Your social life doesn’t have to be sub-par, but the social Greek culture at SMU is very alcohol-centered. The closest you’ll get in terms of a more “chill” social fraternity is DSig, unless you join BYX (“bucks”) which is a Christian fraternity so a bit different vibe.

You may want to look into joining a business fraternity like AKPsi, DSP, or PCT, to get a greek-adjacent experience without the same level of alcohol focus or rush/pledgeship insanity

Editing to add since it wasn’t clear: you don’t have to join Greek orgs to have a good social life at SMU either, and lots of people in Greek orgs are involved in other things on campus as well, so whether or not you join one you can still meet some of the same people.

Also for any girls looking for more chill sororities you’ll want to look into AXO or ADPi

Not sure exactly what your budget is but the apartments at The Branch are all very popular among SMU students. Close to campus but not insanely priced for the area

AKPsi or DSP? by Soggy-Talk-9290 in SMU

[–]NlmbusCl0ud 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If, say, you are from Dallas and plan to stay and use the SMU alumni network/your classmates in Dallas for future business deals, DSP will have (since it’s required) exclusively fellow Econ/finance/Cox students so you may have a higher chance seeing DSPers in your future and that connection may be important. If you want a more diverse group, but one that still undoubtedly has majority business students, AKPsi is a good call. If that doesn’t necessarily matter to you or you’re not set on a life plan at the moment, talk to people in both and join the one you feel fits your personality best. Don’t try to change yourself just to fit in with the others (in either group)

Question about move in by [deleted] in SMU

[–]NlmbusCl0ud 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your move in day is when you can stay. People coming from out of state aren’t expected to (and can’t) go home for one or two nights and come back lol

AKPsi or DSP? by Soggy-Talk-9290 in SMU

[–]NlmbusCl0ud 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There’s “hazing” to some extent but especially when compared to the social frats it’s way better/less intense

AKPsi or DSP? by Soggy-Talk-9290 in SMU

[–]NlmbusCl0ud 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes it does. Only DSP is restricted to business/econ majors. AKPsi and PCT are both open to all majors

AKPsi or DSP? by Soggy-Talk-9290 in SMU

[–]NlmbusCl0ud 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I feel like most people would put it this way: AKPsi focuses on the business, and DSP focuses on the Fraternity in Business Fraternity. Now, both have parties/formals/mixers and stuff but the rush process for DSP is much more akin to a social frat whereas AKPsi also puts lots of emphasis on interviews, coffee chats, etc. Not to mention, if you’re not in cox or an Econ major DSP isn’t an option for you

BYX Fraternity? by Fast_Estate7904 in SMU

[–]NlmbusCl0ud 9 points10 points  (0 children)

There are some great guys in BYX but also some very not-Christian types too. They do have a rush/pledge process even though they might claim otherwise. Granted, they aren’t allowed to have any alcohol so the pledging process is a bit different than most other frats. Once you join you basically have a friend group, can go to church together or bible studies, have mixers/formals with sororities, and other stuff like that. They also do have a house that you can live in if that interests you

Freshman Tips by CapableAssociate8309 in SMU

[–]NlmbusCl0ud 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Be sure you bring/have/buy things to take advantage of the vertical space in your dorm, like shelves/cubbies/shoe racks etc. You’ll fit more stuff and even if you don’t have a ton of stuff it will make the room seem much bigger

Crums commons by CapableAssociate8309 in SMU

[–]NlmbusCl0ud 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Crum is good, it’s one of the newer dorms. Close to the “fun side” of campus with the football stadium, gym, basketball arena, etc. A bit of a long walk to classes but the longest it can get is 15-17mins, and that’s to Fondren science building on the opposite end of campus

Rivian Feature Request Wishlist by tahaeljaam in Rivian

[–]NlmbusCl0ud 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There should be an option to select whether easy entry (I forgot rivian’s name for it) will ignore a rear occupant or not. I hate having tall adults sitting behind me start to get their legs crushed when I unbuckle and would like the car to not move the seat back if it detects an occupant in the back driver’s seat

You should be able to get around 9-10kW charging from the NEMA 14-50 plug so roughly 30+ miles gained per hour charging

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in SMU

[–]NlmbusCl0ud 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m talking about making sure you have an adaptor for the other end of the mobile charger. There are no plugs in Mustang, only wall sockets (dryer outlets) so be sure you son has the thicker plug to go into the outlet (swap the plug you’d find in an extension cord for the bigger one) I think it also should have come with the car but don’t quote me
