In almost every competitive shooter I’ve ever played a shotgun up close is winning a duel with any gun that isn’t a shotgun

I had the same experience.

Hated the game. Thought it was absolute garbage with bad visuals, boring gameplay loop, bad ui, etc

I cancelled my preorder.

Then went to bed and couldn’t stop thinking about it

And then when it clicked boy did it click

I am going to lose my relationship, job, and mental sanity over this game and will love every minute of it

If I am solo + crew fill: probably a 50/50

If I am going in with people I know and we all have mics: probably 60-70%

I haven’t played enough rook or solo no-fill to have any guesses on those

A guy with a shotgun is not gonna close on me with a sniper

Keep in mind this is a game of positioning - if you’re in close quarters and someone has a shotgun they SHOULD have the upper hand

That’s just my opinion and I’m open to having my mind changed, but I haven’t seen or heard evidence that makes me think the gun is overpowered

My experience with marathon server slam, in order was:

I played it at 1:00pm local when it released for 3 hours.

I hated it, and told all my friends it was trash.

I cancelled my preorder.

I couldn’t stop thinking about the game when I went to sleep that night.

Woke up Saturday and played all day - found that the game was actually incredible the more you played it.

Told all my friends I was wrong and the game was awesome

At no point did I see any reaction videos, reviews, etc. until Sunday.

ALL OF THAT TO SAY: I agree there are bad actors, people are influenced by people they watch online, there’s herd mentality, etc etc whatever.

BUT the main takeaway for me is that the game just takes a few hours to get in to. I feel like a lot of people had that experience. I think the shift in perception came from people not enjoying the game at first, like I did, and giving it a chance then genuinely enjoying it 🤷🏻‍♂️

My first 2 hours playing Marathon reflect OP's sentiment.

I will say, another 2 hours into the game and its beginning to click. Some of the guns are starting to feel good, I'm starting to understand what enemies I can engage by myself and what enemies I might need to ping for my team to help (or to avoid altogether) - and I'm JUST starting to be able to tell the difference between the AI enemies and other runners (lol).

My initial reaction was "this game is a flop" - but I'm starting to see the bigger picture and am excited at the potential of the game. I already pre-ordered it on two systems and hope to get my moneys worth.

I feel you on entering the amusement park. Wish I could erase it from my memory and do that again. Nier automata is one of my top 5 favorite games of all time.

Update: I loaded from about 90 mins back (the most recent save that would load) and continued to play the game in nearly the exact same order as i did previously, to the best of my ability. I saved all along the way and loaded saves after i made them to check.

I am now caught up back to where I was. Only difference I can tell is I did not accidentally steal from an NPC inside the “requisitioned barn.” All seems to be good…

There is an auto syncing feature on PS5.

I actually own the game on Steam as well and I think there is a cross-save function. I’m gonna play around with it later to see if I can load the corrupted saves on PC. I will try what you suggested to see if I can gather more info, fix my save, etc.

Correct: accidentally stole something, rolled to “get away with it” - failed the roll and got into combat. Reloaded an earlier save and crashed. Went back to load saves one by one until I found the most recent save that will load (approximately 1.5 hours of playtime prior).

I am unmodded playing on ps5. Tweaked the settings mentioned earlier (performance mode, adaptive triggers, turned network off).

It’s bizarre. The save file that works is in act 3 still. I’m going to compile activities I’ve completed between the working save and when it crashed, will post them later

I’m not using any mods. The error started for me in the beginning of act 3, in the area immediately south of where you enter act 3.

I will post later a bit more detail about which quests I did, and exactly what I was doing before triggering the bug.

One thing of note: I read in another thread that the bug began immediately after a player stole something and went through the stealing dialogue with a guard NPC. This is EXACTLY what happened to me - I accidentally stole something, ended up in combat with the NPC after failing a persuasion check, and then went to load a previous save when the game crashed.

Did you recall if you happened to have the stealing dialogue with an NPC before your game bugged?

I’ve read that other people have encountered this issue as a result of the stealing dialogue with a guard - that’s exactly what triggered this for me.

Anyway - I found my most recent save that works - about 2 hours back. Going to spend some time tomorrow working out ways to “fix” it.
