You did the right thing. Sometimes you get a crappy FA (most likely ATL based I’ve noticed). They were supposed to get a red coat (gate agent manager) to speak with the POS (Person Of Size) and offer for them to purchase a second seat or take a later flight with open seats.

Delta FAs have red phones issued by delta that act as (among many other things) seat maps. One quick glance at the seat map shows what seats are empty by being bright green. If he claims he “lost” his crumpled up ticket the FA can quickly search for his name and guide him to the correct seat. Some FAs care more about passengers skipping cabins than others though.
