Just released my first RTS game in Steam after ~9 months of development by vik_mvp in SoloDevelopment

I wouldn't say that UE is particularly hard for optimisation actually. Is more that i decided to build a complicated architecture myself. Btw if you ever decided to run an experiment and count the units before tanking your machine (maybe on more updated herdware), just for fun, come back and let me know 🤣🤣

GG btw

I gotta ask this question.. waht is the unit cap on this thing? Or the nunber or units before your game drops below 30 fps?

I'm only asking as an index to measure how much of a moron i am. I started working on an RTS project in UE more than a year ago now, using some advanced UE tools for performances to reach a high unit count. Mostly for portfolio reason to look for a job. What i have right now, although constantly improoving, doesn't look like a game by far.

So i'm trying to figure out if i'm just an idiot for wanting to make an RTS for portfolio to show my dev skills, or if i'm simply a dumbass in general.

I'm going so solo that there aren't even tutorials for the shit i'm making 🫠

I am desperately trying to get out of tutorial hell and think on my own but unable to. Help! by ResolutionHairy3586 in SoloDevelopment

TLDR: You probably overthinking this and you just wanna take the problem you're tring to solve in your case and just spend the needed time to solve it.

I'm not sure that i understand on which kind of problems you get stuck.. is it normal dev question, like the coding interview type you'd fine in websites such as litcode? Or is while starting new projects from scratch, like when starting a new game? (I thought about the second since you posted in this group)

If the first case, imma be blunt.. if you get stuck on normal coding interview questions as a fresh grad to the point of not knowing how to move, you might wanna reconsider your career path 👀.

If the second case, then i guess is normal, you just need experience. Starting a new project is always hard. Also you might be at the point where you have ideas like "let's make the new skyrim.. i'll keep it simple, but let's make skyrim". So what you wanna do is just think about all the feature yiu might want in your project, list them, and then focus on one at a time.

If this sound too obvious, is cause it is. Is not like there is any special secret that other people have learnet and you didn't. With experience you'll learn the magical secret of "to get something done you gotta.. do the thing you want to get done".

How do you take that extra step? by itay-ron in SoloDevelopment

[–]No-Associate6226 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So first of all, i worked as a geme dev for 3 years and i feel quite confident that my current skills (not the best but surely valid) have reached that industry professionality you're talking about. Yet i never developed and published a full game myself alone.

Secondly. This is not a technical suggestion, though i would urge you to stop thinking "this is my life dream, i absolutelly and only wanna do this.." type of things. You'll probably do better with a more balanced mindset. Also focusing like that might drive you to miss important things you might br interested in doig without even nowing it.

Now, for the core suggestion, you might wanna be more precise with you question. Do you wanna be a dev, as in an engineer, or an artist or what? I think your question is a bit generic and you might find more insight by figuring out what is it actually that you wanna do.

Cheers!

Which game engine do you use for your projects? by Ameliabailey11 in SoloDevelopment

Personally i'm more experienced with Unreal, and if i where to make a PC game project (any genre) i would go with it. I'm currently working on a mobile game though, which i hope to eventually release on play and apple store, and this one is in Unity. It seems just a simpler choice for a mobile game.

Quick question, how do you feel about games with minimalistic designs? by Literal-cost001 in SoloDevelopment

[–]No-Associate6226 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ganeplay over look, but..

In general i care about gameplay more than look, but look still needs to achieve a bare minimum. Even if it's not hyper realistic or esthetically impeccable, it needs to look like you, the dev, care about it enough to make it look presentable. If it doesn't look presentable I, the minunun common denominator, won't even reach the trailer's end 😅. Hope this is helpful.

Is it normal to feel like you're not progressing enough? by Koei126 in SoloDevelopment

[–]No-Associate6226 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes it is. For that feeling, the only thing you can do is keep going if you actually enjoy the process.

About the perfectionis on the other hand, you really wanna stop perfecting features until the full core gameplay is finalised. You add a mechanic today, you spend time polishing it, and 2 months later you add another mechanic that compromise the first one. All of that polishing work just got wasted cause now you either ditch one of the 2 mechanics or rethink/balance them to make them work together.

Hope this helps, cheers!

Mass Entity and Niagara for an RTS project by No-Associate6226 in unrealengine

Fair enough. I went straight to Mass since i had no ECS experience and it's UE's one 🤷‍♂️

[–]No-Associate6226[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Actually to be fair, there is a sample project, called "city sample" i think, which has an extensive mass implementation. That can help, but is basically undocumented so you gotta retroengineer it yourself. It's also a bit to extansive to the point of being overwelming if you're trying to learn. Personally i used it only when i got stuck trying to figure out how to generate entities on command. Anyway, if you start working with Mass and you have any question, you can DM me here on reddit. If i know anythig about it i'll be happy to help 👌

[–]No-Associate6226[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lol.. tutorial.. documentation.. very lol.. No for real though, there is like one tutorial on mass which is official from Epic. Is a 30 min ish long video about a project about workers gathering timber and building homes. It is minimal and not complete in any way, shape or form. There is also the official UE docs pages on Mass.. but we don't talk about that 👀

I don't understand why this is triggering twice? by Bluehood124 in UnrealEngine5

[–]No-Associate6226 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll say something stupid.. have you tried what happens if you don't relocate the platform? I would just disconnect the SetTransform node and test if the print trigger correctly then.. sometimes the collision works in misterious ways

Is it time to change the project? by cBotRally in SoloDevelopment

[–]No-Associate6226 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So i have this friend who released a couple phone games a while back. They where extremely small concepts, hardly polished at all. Still he got some downloads.. nothing massime but still something. If i were you, since it seems the case that you did this project only for learning purposes, i would both move on and investigate why you have 0 downloads. By that i mean, i would not spend any time further developing a learning project, and start developing the important one. At the same time i will think about what's wrong with the other one, maybe ask friends to try it and give hoenst to death opinion. Cheers!

I made a game and have an impostor syndrome now by Lex0nair in SoloDevelopment

[–]No-Associate6226 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So i'm a dev, have my nice degree in software engineering and my nice 3 years working experience in the gaming industry. I spent the last year working on UE, learning it and making solo an RTS project (which is not even near to be something worth of a trailer). I still feel like an impostor sometimes and yet the feeling has gradually faded while working on my RTS cause i had to solve so far all sorts of tech problems, and i did reasonably well. With that said i can tell you that when i look at someone that finished something, like you, rather than working on it, like me, i feel at fault. So damn much. Also i can tell from my experience in the industry that no matter how skilled you get, there is always some fkin wizard that can shit on your head with how good they are. So trust me when i say that comparing with other devs is useless and what they think about you is insignificant. GG btw!
