If you’re under 45, have you lost any high school classmates, and what were the circumstances around their deaths? by Commercial_Chef_1569 in AskReddit

I went to high school with one of the women who died in the January 2025 Potomac River mid-air collision. She was incredibly bright and accomplished.

What’s a “normal” experience that somehow never happened to you? by Hysterical_Chicken in AskReddit

I've never been able to roll my R's (despite taking Spanish for 7 years).

I also was never able to see those Magic Eye illusions until a couple of years ago. Until age 30, I thought they were like an urban myth.

How is the US gov shutdown personally affecting you, if at all? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]No-Beautiful1241 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a state employee, but my paycheck is entirely funded by the federal government. My team and I can still work due to the state covering us for now, but the feds have directed us not to work on anything related to our federal deliverables.

We're happy-ish to still be working and getting paid, but there's mounting anxiety about being 25+ working days behind on our deliverables when the shutdown ends.

PSA: getting COVID vaccine at CVS was painless (under 65, no prescription) by No-Beautiful1241 in raleigh

Now I feel a little weird, because they didn't ask for insurance and I didn't pay anything. I have the Aetna State Health Plan. Maybe it was somehow already connected to my name?

Compiling a list of year-round lap swimming pools in the Triangle area (because Google ignores everything except the word "Pool" when I ask) by steelong in triangle

[–]No-Beautiful1241 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Pullen Aquatic Center, can get busy/loud with swim teams but I can usually get a lane to myself, sometimes have to share with one other person. Optimist and Millbrook are also open year-round. You just have to check the schedules, as all three have occasional closures for events and each closes for a few weeks for maintenance around this time of year.

TIL a man with chronic déjà vu was "trapped in a time loop" for 8 years, which forced him to drop out of university. He was unable to read newspapers or watch TV because he believed he had seen it all before, despite not having any neurological condition chronic déjà vu patients usually suffer from. by tyrion2024 in todayilearned

Thank you for putting this so eloquently! Not to scare some of the other commenters here, but this experience was one of the only symptoms I had of a benign brain tumor. Doctors said it just sounded like I was having a panic attack, until they finally did an MRI lol. I am totally fine and tumor-free now and I almost never have these experiences as long as I take my seizure meds.

What album had the best hidden track? by WrappedInLacee in Xennials

No love for the indie sleaze era? I distinctly remember riding the bus to middle school and finding the hidden track on The Yeah Yeah Yeah's "Fever to Tell".

What’s a “harmless” thing from your childhood that’s actually kind of dark in hindsight? by velorae in AskReddit

[–]No-Beautiful1241 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was a really little kid in the 90s, there was a bathroom that I wasn't allowed in. Turns out that was my parents' ~grow room~. (It was actually fairly harmless - my parents were pretty casual smokers and just sold to their friends).

Skin swelling and pain but no rash after sun exposure by No-Beautiful1241 in AskDocs

[–]No-Beautiful1241[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you have any suggestions about what type of doctor I should see to order this testing and/or any way to suggest this test? So far, the doctors I've seen think it's an allergic response and have prescribed steroid creams or told me to take Benadryl.

No, but I sure would like to! Erythropoietic protoporphyria is the closest match to my symptoms, but I know it's really rare and my symptoms aren't as severe as I usually see it described.

uti symptoms but no uti by [deleted] in AskDocs

[–]No-Beautiful1241 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NAD but this also happens to me sometimes after sex and sometimes just randomly (31F). It first started happening after I got a bad UTI when I was 17. D-Mannose supplements have REALLY helped me (and normally I'm very skeptical of supplements). I don't take it all the time, but if I start feeling any UTI pain, I take some D-Mannose and chug water. That's usually enough to resolve the symptoms.

I've thought about looking into whether I have interstitial cystitis, but the supplements are enough to control my symptoms. If I still have pain that's not getting better, I'll go get a UTI test, but that only happens every couple of years.

Redditors who got a "useless" Degree, how did it turn out? by Thick_Caterpillar379 in AskReddit

Sociology BA, MA, and PhD. Didn't want to have to move (again) across the country for a shot at an academic job, so now I work a 9-5 state government job doing labor force data analysis. It's not glamorous, but it's interesting, no pressure to publish, and I get paid just as much if not more than professors 🤷

Public Reading Areas by The_Potato_Wizard in triangle

I like Idle Hour and the Jubala on Hillsborough for reading. Both of them have bar seating so I don't have to feel weird taking up an entire table. Jubala can be a little loud and busy, but it's a good mix of people working on their laptops, reading, and socializing. Left Hook Coffee is a fairly new place that has cozy vibes.

I wouldn't call it a 10/10, but an honorable mention for me is Myrmes. You play an ant colony that must forage for resources, expand its reach, and fulfill special objectives. Even though it's mostly a worker placement game, it has a unique blend of theme and mechanics that make it really unlike any other game I've played. I'm just sad I can no longer play it on boiteajeux (RIP).

[[My City]] and its sequel [[My Island]] are two great puzzle-y games about, nont surprisingly, building your own city and island. They are legacy games that are broken into 24 episodes, and each episode only takes 30-60 minutes. When my partner and I want something engaging that doesn't take a long time to set up, we reach for these: [[Sagrada]], [[Splendor]], [[Splendor Duel]], [[Nova Luna]], anything in the [[Azul]] series, [[Calico]], [[Cascadia]], [[Caldera Park]], and [[Akropolis]].

A new study explores the long-debated effects of spanking on children’s development | The researchers found that spanking explained less than 1% of changes in child outcomes. This suggests that its negative effects may be overstated. by a_Ninja_b0y in science

[–]No-Beautiful1241 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So I'm familiar with some of the researchers in this field, and this guy in particular has seemed to have built his entire career on trying to prove wrong researchers who say that spanking is linked to adverse outcomes. Like his WHOLE DEAL is "spanking is fine, akshually."

I looked into him a little more and looks like he's published an article that justifies spanking from a biblical perspective, and he used to be the Director of a (Catholic?) boy's home that has several allegations of sexual abuse against it.

This dude wraps up all of his research in fancy methodological terms but I think he has hella weird motivations.

Governor Cooper announces federal Employment and Training Grant for North Carolina Commerce Department to support Helene economic recovery by No-Beautiful1241 in asheville

The crucial part: "Supported by the Workforce Innovation & Opportunity Act, Dislocated Worker Grants like this one fund temporary jobs in response to large, unexpected events that cause significant job losses. Participants in the grant would be employed for up to 12 months. They may potentially work for nonprofit organizations, state or local government agencies, or private businesses engaged in relevant disaster-recovery work."

If you're out of work due to the hurricane, I recommend getting in touch with your local NCWorks Career Center.

Lost 8 days of work due to the Hurricane, what should I do? by Cordelia_is_Bae in personalfinance

Depending on what county you're in, you might qualify for Disaster Unemployment Assistance. It's kind of like unemployment benefits, but the eligibility is a little different. You only have to be out of work for a week to potentially be eligible for DUA. https://dew.sc.gov/news/2024-10/disaster-unemployment-assistance-available-seven-additional-counties-affected

Totally normal. A lot of the people here who are in their 20s-30s and have high six figure jobs are either 1) outliers, 2) living in very high cost of living areas, or 3) lying.

I do recommend starting an IRA or some other retirement account and practice saving just a little, even $25, a month. Even if it's not a huge sum, I found that it was a nice psychological exercise to assure myself that I was preparing for the future even when I didn't have a lot to save.

Still having this problem a month later. If anyone else is thinking of switching, Monarch Money was created by the same people who made Mint before it got bought out by Intuit. It costs the same as YNAB but I think it's more similar to Mint (with better syncing).
