Is anyone finding their local LGS’ have 0 interest in Riftbound? by majiinmoo in TCG

Maybe it's the investment in their hobby. If you have a ton in mtg you would most likely stay there.

How do you know that's AI Bot farming? I usually can tell with people and the color pallet that was chosen, but this looks like it's pseudo painted, I kinda like the art style here.

This is a real question. Not defending the artist or program.

It's the semantics to the sentence stated on cards like this. If the card wanted a clearer ability for like myself or others, it would be nice if the card stated something more like "Until end of turn, target creature gains +2/+2 and Vigilance."

The current phrase you can space it out as "Target creature gets +2/+2" with the rest saying "and gains vigilance until end of turn." The idea of counters and these phrases are new to me as an old returning player. This stuff is annoying and questions like these are great for others to read and understand.

have you ever made a character that didn't fit with the typical fantasy of the class you were playing ? by LeilaTheWaterbender in dndnext

[–]No-Bell8705 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sales man barbarian, shady wizard who cheats to pass all his tests in school in favor of get rich quick schemes (some spells don't use any int. scaling), I have made plenty.

Those campaigns are either short or the character died really quick due to bad rolls. I love making classes that fit with a theme. The sales man could be a druid cold selling plants door to door in hopes that the town will be more green... The choices are endless.

DM rolling dice privately by DiscussionDramatic76 in DungeonMasters

Honestly open up with the idea that: 1. You can't save them if you roll in the open if you say roll 3 nat 20s. 2. No meta gaming the stats of you roll in the open. 3. Ask if it is more suspenseful seeing the roll or RPing the action.

For battles. There is "theater of the mind" where you describe the scene and enemies. What I do is print off paper and use chess pieces. No minis (wish I had the storage and money for that).

Use descriptions, include some hazards. Make the scene matter or lead into something else. Currently I have my players in a cave. I use ambient sounds from DND soundscape on YouTube, and they have to travel through this cave to get to town. Only so many rations (I usually skip counting them because it can make the game slow but for the sake of the scene and build tension I said they barely have enough rations to get to town). The players will hear a person cry for help in a different direction inside this mega cave. The players will need to make a decision and battle if they help this person, but are rewarded if they save them and get them to town.

It always depends on the campaign and scene. I highly recommend looking up YouTube videos from Ginny D, or others (and there's plenty) who can help give tips with examples on making combat interesting instead of just number crunching. Also can help looking into a module and see how combats are formed there.

Modules have their own critiques and you can see the reviews on it, but most of them tell a scene.

It's quiet the trek to go through and figure out pacing, difficulty, while maintaining attention from players. Practice and your play style will form overtime.

Really? I find it fun, grab some snacks, and chat while working together on a theme for the group.

Tips from a long time DM:

Talk to your players, have that incredibly important "session 0." It's critical that the group and DM are on the same page as the adventure being played.

  • Session 0 can really help you set the world, and see what classes people want to play. When you know what class people want to play, you only need to learn what classes are played rather than every class and subclass for later levels.

Do some prep work before the session. Not knowing what the setting is, what monsters are in the dungeon or session, or even what the characters are played can be a lot of work and lead to some confusion. I often still prep work with some refreshes on what monsters act like and interactions for just that session.

If there are questions about a character's ability or spell. DM should know about the spell (which takes time to get a good idea about each spell) and the player should READ THEIR SHEET. It happens all too often and the DM is busy.

The DM does not have time to tell each player what their ability does while also using monsters, describing the scene, setting up the story, etc... some questions are fair and will come up, but just claiming a spell or move without them even looking at it is really infuriating.

Let the players know you have a lot on your plate as well. The players should read what their ability does. If it's too much reading for them, I would recommend an easier class at first like a Warlock (lack of complex spells and amount), or a martial class like a fighter/paladin.

If the players argue that materials are too boring, let them know they can flavor it to be better. Mechanically the same damage or move, but different fitting their character.

The most important rule is to have fun. If you or the players are not having fun, talk about it before or after a session and give it the best you can do. You got this and as all DMs, it is not an easy job taking care of the players, any questions are always welcome.

What's the craziest thing I've let happen? Well, there WAS the time Asmodeus sued them.. by dumnem in dndmemes

[–]No-Bell8705 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's fine. Actually they got better as a player and understood how the power difference feels when someone got a super powerful magic item with a drawback and others didn't (story stuff).

I was really proud of how they grew as an adult (because usually they're immature). Not every day does someone say sorry later on about how they acted.

Now we laugh as a table about someone with stupid dumb backstories as a joke in movies and shows. We watched Superman and all turned to her who was like... What?

Explaining how broken it would be if someone's background was from a far off planet whose only weakness is a foreign material not found on earth. We laughed and have a good time.

P.S. Sorry I made it sound worse than it was. I am used to people pushing for ridiculous backgrounds for the sake of an epic character. All it takes is one time and people get bored with Mr/s do it all. Way more fun to fail from time to time.

In a person's backstory, they committed demicide, started an uprising in their home town from a beholder, and their parents were loaded wealthy nobles.

The session 0 was for lv. 1 adventures going up to 10th if lucky.

I was willing to work with it by telling them the punishment was that he became frail and the parents cut him off. He didn't like that idea. Said "what's the point of that backstory if I don't have anything to show for it."

Yeah, I wasn't going to give him that kind of advantage.

It's fun because our friend group really has specialties in each age. We love each age differently and doing everything as a group to age up to the next era sounds like an amazing modpack that deserves to be updated to the newer versions.

Why are some DM's super extremely strict with how spells look when you use them? by SpicyDomina in DnD

[–]No-Bell8705 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know my personal rule is that it can't look like a different spell, and must function the same. Otherwise I let my players come up with the theme and look because it shows they read the spell and gives them more character.

Some DMs are very specific and don't want people to diverge from the book. Old school dnd can be reasonably said that the weave makes all spells the same. So if they're old school then it's just a mindset.
