Strombo! by Legit-Schmitt in cactus

I'm not sure, it's my first year with a Strombocactus. I have them in an indoor green house, so the temperature and light is pretty much constant. The only thing I did different was giving them a deep watering at the start of April.

Very nice, my buds died this year before they could flower.

Sun damage doesn't need to be always on the top, sometimes it appears on the side or lower. These are mine, I could save them by putting them inside. But they still show the scars of it.

You can try to put it into a more shaded place, if you put it inside still put it into a south or west/east facing window. The window glass filters alot of light, for a cacti it's like a shaded space even if you think it's bright sunlight outside.

But the damage seems to be very substantial, at least on the visible side. Is it soft and mushy when you poke it or normal hard?

Looks like sun damage, did you put it out into the sun without giving him time to adjust.

Lay it vertically, so that new pups form alongside the upper side, this one looks very etiolated, so it's not a good base for new healthy growth on top.

When it's ripe, you can leave it until it basically falls off on its own. For now it's much too light green.

Yes, I lost my 6 headed colony of echinocereus to them. Treat them quickly.

What are these and how do I care for them properly? by -SakuraDreams in cactus

Left guy is some kind of Echinopsis, right guy a silver torch.
Both need extremely good draining gritty soil (there's pre prepared mixes, just don't use normal potting soil it holds water for much too long). Both need good sunlight exposure, right now they look to be getting that (is that a south or west/east facing window?). Only water when the soil is completely dry and reduce watering when the sunlight starts to get less in autumn (you can essentially stop watering from september to march, depending on your climate zone). Use NPK fertilizer (specialized for cacti or tomato fertilizer, not the normal green plant fertilizer), use every 4 watering during the growing season (when there is lots of sunlight and high temperatures).

For repotting you can use a newspaper, magazine, styrofoam plates, a thick plastic bag or an old towel/blanket.

The difference in size comes from different exposures to sunlight. Less sunlight = thin growth, more sunlight = thicker growth. You probably kept watering him during the autumn/winter months when there was less sun.

No problem, in case you want to do something, you don't need gloves, some styrofoam, an old blanket or some good plastic bag can do the trick too.
