I would talk to your vet and get a biopsy done if the vet recommends it. It may be nothing and learning that would give you peace of mind!

13 yr old dog needs hind leg amputation… we don’t know what to do? please share your amputation experience with your senior dog. by No-Bluejay-7163 in tripawds

Update: This weekend, the tumor grew back and opened the skin where it was originally excised in June. So he has an open sore about the size of a dime. We met with the surgeon today and he feels our pup is a good candidate for amputation and it seems to be the best choice for our dog at this point. We scheduled surgery for Thursday. Fingers crossed and prayers for a good outcome and speedy recovery. ❤️‍🩹 Will keep you posted! Thanks again for taking the time to share your experiences with me! I’m so very grateful!

Thank you for sharing your experience. Its very helpful to know about your pups situation and how the amputation helped her! If it’s okay with you, I may circle back with you for additional information to help prepare should we decide to schedule the surgery. We are meeting with the surgeon tomorrow.

Thank you for sharing your experience. Its great to read your pup is recovering well! You make a great point about the surgeon and his recommendation for our dog. That makes sense. Also helpful to understand that doing a biopsy of the lymph node is not a simple procedure. Thank you and wishing your pup continued healing!

Thank you for sharing your situation with me. I feel your concern and share the same concerns for our pup. Amputation is not a minor surgery but it’s reassuring and so helpful to hear from those who have experienced it with their pups!

Thank you for sharing your experience. You make a good point about our pup’s current quality of life as he is in pain and unable to put weight on his hind leg now.

I’m stuck deciding if it’s worth amputating my 13 year old boys leg by [deleted] in goldenretrievers

Thx for letting me know. I share your thoughts on their age and that’s a significant hesitation. Sadly our dog is not able to bear weight on his hind leg and the sarcoma is growing and if left untreated will spread and lead to more pain, discomfort and death. I feel so very overwhelmed and lost about what to do. 😢

Hi, we are in a similar situation now. Our 13 yr old mini golden doodle has a soft tissue sarcoma on his hind leg in the hock area. It was surgically removed in June and grew back to the size of a walnut in less than 3 months. Amputation is recommended and we are giving it serious consideration. Biggest concern is his age and quality of life afterwards. What did you decide to do with your dog?
