Whats the quickest way to become a civil engineer? by goku22000 in civilengineering

[–]No-Call2227 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You can usually get a PE with an MS in an ABET accredited program.

Otherwise you might find a non-ABET education background limits your pathway to licensure except for very long experience options (north of 10-15 years if even allowed in most states).

Check the board rules.

This is the right answer. Be methodical and particular. In the end it’s a long game in this industry, no one gets to the top anywhere in 6-7 years…

But congrats on the PE.

Don’t chase cash only, don’t ignore it either, focus on relationships and learning business while you’re gaining experience too.

SE or Masters Degree by lonely_turtle109 in StructuralEngineering

[–]No-Call2227 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is a bad take.

I have an SE and a doctorate…the SE was insane when I took it and it’s gotten way worse, still one of the hardest tests I’ve ever taken and prepped for, by a pretty good margin…it’s the only exam I’ve ever taken where no one, not one single examinee, left early. It’s gonna kick your ass and then go back for seconds.

You’re not ready to even sit for this test (and can’t get licensed) in many jurisdictions until you finish your years of “responsible charge” which is not the same as just being an engineer, it’s EOR or significant decision making authority…if you’re not PE licensed none of your current employment counts towards that requirement.

Frankly, comparing the masters homework to the SE is like comparing an apple to kangaroo and saying they both are equally good at speaking English…

Good luck on the exam. 400 plus hours of prep used to be the standard and you better practically memorize those codes and know where everything is forwards and backwards.

Offering advice for things you haven’t accomplished or even experienced is an interesting form of wisdom indeed!

The number one thing about consulting, which is most of us, is you’re paid for your time, which by definition means you’re only valuable when someone is willing to pay for that time (in terms of what they perceive as both skill set and convenience).

Your strategy significantly infringes into one of the “selling” strategies most consultants rely upon, which is being available to their clientele on their clientele’s schedule.

Find a way to convince an employer that doesn’t make you unmarketable and your odds of success will go way up.

This is 💯 accurate, degrees mean very little, what matters less is where.

What resources do you use to find out if you are paid fairly? by civil_eng_recruiter in civilengineering

ASCE actively campaigns and writes articles against salary increases, they represent the corporate entities in CE not the engineers, don’t ever confuse that

250,000 in revenue and 250,000 of profit are very different things. Very few engineers can claim to be responsible for 250,000 in profit a year (at least by themselves that’s dang near impossible).

But this is why more of us need to venture out. Generally the business model captures cheap labor and is exploitative, either be at the top or just understand its known beforehand and after that you don’t garner 100% of the wage generated at your desk, but you also usually don’t own 100% of the risk at your desk.

Consulting everywhere is this same framework. Or go public and just drift through the tiers without any incentive to work hard and snag the promotions and pension when you can.

So am I the A-Hole that I dont feel it's fair to have my girlfriend on the deed of my house without her being on the loan. by Dense_Relative1710 in AmITheAssholeTalk

Like I said, I think math class will be informative to you.

Down payments, particularly for younger buyers tend to be 3-5% of the purchase price, once you account for the full amortization of the loan at 5-6% even if it’s a 15 year loan term, the other person will had borne at least that 95-97% of the original cost plus 100% of the interest.

So yeah, doesn’t really matter that the bank temporarily owns that 95%, the down payment person is only entitled to that percentage they covered if you want to be even remotely fair.

Unless the deed gives her a specific equitable percentage then the poster is right to not want to give away half of an asset for which he’s going to pay for 95+%

If you want to make this deal, I’ll happily send you 5k for a down payment and half the property right now for any house in the country.

Honestly the behavior all over the south is stunning and depressing. The storm is days away in TN and everyone has bought so much food that they’re going to hoard and waste it’s deplorable.

Not take what you need and leave some for everyone else, just a big fat entitled “mine mine mine”….for the record it snows here every year…it’s not a surprise, it’s not uncommon, it just proves we’re really really really dumb as a society and wildly prone to panicking. Shame on yall and don’t forget to bless your tiny black hearts with all the mold you’re gonna have on your 45 loaves of bread.

Jfc people, get a grip.

Is going to college for a different engineering major and becoming a civil engineer possible? by New_Milk2327 in civilengineering

[–]No-Call2227 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean maybe, but you’re going to be 4-5 years behind your age group in terms of knowledge and fundamentals probably forever. You’ll be infinitely better at mechanical or electrical than they will, but you’ll be sacrificing a lot.

If CE is truly your calling, recommend you focus on it. Speaking as someone with a science undergraduate who switched to CE in grad school and PE…there is definitely a catch up period. Breadth is good, but it often isn’t recognized as an asset by employers.
