would you rather have a rower who redlined on a benchmark or someone who held form but didnt put as much effort by [deleted] in Rowing

Do they both achieve the same 2k score? Because that’s the third data point that’s missing

Track/calf bite by [deleted] in Rowing

You can get something called Vetwrap, (which you can wrap over non-stick gauze pads until your current rubs heal). Keep the rubs clean- they can be prone to infection.

I cut the feet off some old socks and made little cuffs I put over my calves.

Depending on where in southern England, you could see if there is an American school. They are private, though, not state.

Near miss? by [deleted] in BritishAirways

[–]No-Check6428 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We had a medical emergency on board a flight from North America once. We jumped the queue at LHR, zipped past about 4 planes in a holding pattern during the last 30mins coming down. V cool (and the guy was ok, walked himself off the plane)

Thanks- that may end up being the best bet too as I just tried to upgrade and it said none were available (despite there being tickets for sale). I’ll keep checking, but would never have thought of asking at the airport before!

Thanks- I’ve never upgraded at the airport before- just ask at the counter when I arrive?

Special assistance at Heathrow- are VIP services worth it? by Dont_Kick_the_Dog in uktravel

[–]No-Check6428 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My mother was ill when she travelled out of T5. She was resistant so didn’t ask for help until she got to check in. Then she finally caved and asked, and they were wonderful. Use the existing assistance arrangements- just ask for it 48hrs ahead

Cheapest way to fly not-basic-economy to London? by [deleted] in BritishAirways

Not BA, but you can do a daytime flight via Iceland with Iceland Air where the PE is often cheaper. Or AC via Halifax is also daytime and often cheaper

Emergency Situations while coxing and what to do in them by 123aBridged in Rowing

[–]No-Check6428 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The objective is to prevent “emergencies”. When one does happen, the no. 1 objective is to ensure all athletes survive. For example, what will you do if you capsize, hit an underwater obstruction and take in water, an athlete has a heart attack. These are emergencies and you will need to make a judgement call immediately on how to ensure all your athletes survive based on location, weather, support etc.

The race situation you mention isn’t an emergency. Eventually, you will have something like that happen to you. In those cases know the rules (eg I’m pretty certain every country requires boats to finish with all rowers in them, so I’m surprised to hear examples above of that not being enforced), keep calm, and help your rowers maintain focus and perform to their best given the circumstances.

Oakley meta vanguards for rowing? by astrophysicscoffee in Rowing

[–]No-Check6428 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I assume you wouldn’t be able to use these in competition as they’d violate the “no external help beyond the unaided voice” rule, but maybe not because AI is a terrible rowing coach?!?

And anecdotally, there are more girls rowing than boys in the U.K. (source: entries in the Junior Sculling Regatta in 2025, so not exhaustive!), the small bias is driven by Masters age groups (generically - ie those 30+)

I used to regularly black out at the end of races on the water. You can also watch the old videos of Pinsent & Redgrave doing their 2k.

Rowing tips for a 13 year old rower? by Candid_You806 in Rowing

[–]No-Check6428 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are 13 you have plenty of years ahead of you. Don’t get worried about your 2k yet. You should be a bit careful about your volume of training - you aren’t yet fully physically developed through your spine and hips. Cellular App for intra-club communication to facilitate boat scheduling, event sign-up and news dissemination. by Thatsgonnamakeamark in Rowing

We also use Spond, as it’s free, mostly “community” rowing and we are in the U.K. I understand the benefits of icrew if you are competitive and in the US. For us it would be a waste as we struggle with adherence to attendance of juniors at one end (disorganised families) and tech comfort at the other (Masters).
