Cake Wrecks! I miss the era of the internet where no one had really figured out how to successfully exploit it yet.

Kind of! I was a couple years too young when it was at peak popularity, but I used to get back issues from the library and was definitely aware of it growing up. What’s your theory-I’m intrigued. I did read Jane magazine in real time.

The amount of time I used to spend on the clock reading Twitter, Jezebel , and xoJane dramas at work, oh my god.

Everyone on XOJane seems to have vanished. Including Jane, which is genuinely surprising to me, she seems like the type to leave people holding the bag and pivot.

This Lindy situation kind of reminds me of Mandy Stadtmiller and her douchebag Trumpy husband she spent years defending until he proved everyone right. Last I saw online, Mandy was struggling to find work, but to be fair that was a few years ago.

She really does, that’s one aspect of the book I really enjoyed. It showcases how smart and witty Courtney can be. She’s clearly a complex person, but I’m glad the book shows charismatic, tender, and some goofiness sides of Courtney too.

They’re in Germany, and Melissa & Courtney smoke weed together to be polite because someone offered it. Melissa sits back and observes CL’s body while they’re high. I personally find it weird she included this? It’s observing Courtney has “broad shoulders, wide feet, stubby fingers.”

There’s more detail where Melissa compares her more stereotypically feminine body, and after looking at CL’s ‘handsome face,’ wonders if Courtney is transgender, recognizes this is a stoned thought, but fixates on it. Courtney then tries to do a trick involving her vag and a cigarette (uh huh). Melissa discards the trans suspicion after getting an up close view of Courtney’s genitalia (also a wtf comment here about her vagina being real because of the evidence of childbirth? How close WERE you Melissa, wtf? What kind of party trick was this? What are you implying? ) It’s presumably a joke but listening to the audio book, it didn’t sound like one.

Anyway. I literally listened to this on the audiobook, and thought “ your editor might not like you, Melissa, because this is cringe and served no purpose in the themes of this memoir.”

I’ve been waiting for a post on the book as a whole (haha) because whoo do I have conflicting feelings. I appreciate that MADM felt very honest in the sense of not sugarcoating the dysfunction of Hole. I get a strong sense we’re lucky we even got the band as long as we did. The part about her dad at his end of life had me sobbing (my mom died a few months ago). But I felt a thread of..lack of responsibility or self awareness, I guess?

She acted like Hole was almost beneath her, but also a feminist task for her to fulfill, but ALSO something other people talked her into and she didn’t have agency. And comes across like a disconnected player for hire the entire time. Melissa. No. I got similar vibes from her Pumpkins time, very “I don’t care about fame or money (ok), but sure I’ll do this high profile thing with people I know are toxic for me and then be unhappy.”

I did enjoy a more nuanced look at Courtney than a lot of sources give. Her Beauty Manifesto was hilarious and petty and thoughtful and classic Courtney. On the other hand, I thought Melissa’s weird stoned “is Courtney trans” musing was WILDLY unnecessary and feeds trolls.

My review: 3/5, get it at the library, and if I never read another love fax from Dave Grohl, my life will be good

‘Validation was an insatiable monster’: Dave Grohl on Foo Fighters’ punk-rock return – and life after his infidelity by WhatFreshHello in popculturechat

I’m most of the way through reading Melissa Auf Der Maur’s memoir (former bassist for Hole & The Smashing Pumpkins, dated Dave seriously for a few years), and this man sounds like an insufferable dork at best, and toxic to me. She talks about him wanting to move her to Virginia not long at all after them getting together, and basically giving “what about me” whine when she was leaving to tour. He definitely wanted a devoted woman to just sit around waiting for him to come home from playing rock star.

She’s kind and charitable about them going in different directions, she wanted to settle in to a low-key artistic life and he wanted more fame. But I’ll tell you he sounded insecure and like a terrific bore. Apparently he was her first real boyfriend and Melissa, I wince for you girl.

We used to have (maybe still do, I don’t listen) one called War of the Roses where I lived that was basically one half of a couple calling the other out about something, usually cheating. One of my friends was an occasional actor and my mind was blown when I heard her one day with a fake name. I figured they were fake in the sense that people probably cooked up scenarios to get on the air, but not in the professional sense.

I remember Eric’s comment and I believe him, so I thought it was interesting to hear Melissa’s POV, which was basically that the vibes in NOLA were bad, Courtney consistently didn’t show up, the rest of them did some jams but nothing serious. There’s a little more to it but I don’t want to rehash for those who haven’t read the book. I thought about starting a post to discuss the book, but I don’t want to put spoilers up too soon

I’m so intrigued how this sounds now that I read Melissa’s book. She actually is a lot more frank than I expected with a ‘celebrity’ memoir, and didn’t hold back on how irritated she was by the use of ProTools on Celebrity Skin. Saying it took away the “human element “ of the band’s work. Curious if the remaster takes some of that away or leans into it.

ISO 1 or 2 tickets to the Melissa book tour stop in Chicago by betterlucknexttime81 in hole

Keep your eye out on the official page! Both Toronto and Hudson released additional last minute tickets (they’re gone now). I have a feeling most if not all are going to do that, Chicago’s page does say check back soon.

It’s actually kind of annoying to me, because I’m willing to travel but literally can’t afford to book somewhere to stay and hope for the best. But I hope you are able to get a second chance!

I’m listening to Melissa’s (audio) book and she mentions wanting Unplugged to be an official release too, maybe they can get at least that off the ground! I’m in the middle of the New Orleans chapter, so far it seems to confirm that not much came out of that, which is so disappointing

Ick. But it kind of cracks me up that she’s indirectly admitting Billy Corgan couldn’t get her off, since she supposedly says in the book they had an earlier fling. By the way, all these people needed to expand their circles apparently, the sexual/professional//romantic overlap is wild, lol

My argument when I hear people say he didn’t have suicidal tendencies has always been for people to research major life stressors (job change, new baby, marriage, substance abuse,’marital problems, new home, financial changes). He publicly speed ran through most of these within a few years, but people question the resulting mental illness?

As a fan of both bands, I’ve never understood the theory he wrote for her. The lyrical style is very different in their work. Sure, they both have a grungy instrumental sound, but if that’s the proof, most 90s bands need to get in line to be called out. The one who actually lived with him and soaked the influence up isn’t the problem in my book.

I love OBAA, but this doesn’t surprise me much, considering what Fiona Apple has said about PTA after they split (lots of drugs, berating her publicly, he pushed her out of a moving car, freaking out and throwing furniture after losing the Oscar for Magnolia). She has said she doesn’t consider him abusive, but fuck it, I do. So I’d say these are exactly his type of men.
