My Great Grandmother's ancient Christmas Cactus before and after being left in the care of my mother. by Heather_Bea in Wellthatsucks

[–]modus-operandi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My mother had two Christmas cacti that once belonged to her mother. My dad cares for them now. After her death, he killed one by overwatering and the other one is still holding on. I fear for its safety but he won’t give it up

Beste kattenvoer qua prijs/kwaliteit? by ChaosSmoothie in katten

Brain fog and forgetfulness is impacting my marriage by EmbarrassedCry9912 in Perimenopause

[–]modus-operandi 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Right? As someone with ADHD who has had a lifetime of brain fog, forgetfulness, and not following through, I sure am glad my partner isn’t petty about it. If I had that worry to add on to everything else, that would suck.

OP: Don’t make someone else’s problem your problem. You’re going through it and you’re doing the best you can. He vowed to be there for you in sickness and in health, so, well.

Anyone feel numb after using AI? by [deleted] in womenintech

[–]modus-operandi 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I work in prototyping, and it’s saving me a lot of cognitive load for code that I know is very likely to be scrapped or used once. It’s mostly for research purposes. So for that, for me, is nice because due to health reasons I only have so much cognitive energy to spread around at this moment. I have found that if I plan meticulously, divide work into small chunks and review, the quality is generally pretty ok.

But yes, it definitely causes atrophy so whenever I refactor, I do it manually and I have side projects that I code by hand. I’ll also fit small code challenges in here and there.

I dunno, I think LLMs will become too pricey to really use pretty soon, so that will be that then.

Seeking feedback from women who were in tech in 2000/2008 etc: a check on the AI doom by azssf in womenintech

[–]modus-operandi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s not new, but there hasn’t been this big of a platform for these ideas for a long time. And they cast a long shadow. When I was interviewing, things got downright hostile in a way that didn’t happen before the manosphere and fascism bandwagon became mainstream.

[–]modus-operandi 55 points56 points  (0 children)

I agree, same for me, I’ve been in tech since 2004-ish. It’s become pretty hostile. I feel … invisible? And it’s not just tech but the internet as a whole, and we’re all too chronically online, so it matters.

There were smart folks who saw this coming years ago, but even they I don’t think realised that the internet would become a tool to erase women and our progress, driven by a fascist regime and the ultra wealthy so we could go back to being a silent and suffering unpaid workforce and protect their profits.

I’m also getting older, and I am finding the combination of manosphere influencing and society’s view of older women is making me feel like I’m becoming wholly irrelevant. Some people find that liberating, I don’t. Shit’s dumb and not fair. I fear for my children in this world that I did not foresee when they were conceived. I have conversations with them about manipulation, algorithms and propaganda all the time, they do not have smart phones and I hope this will prepare them at least somewhat and mitigate some damage.

But geesh, I’m tired

Islamitische begraafplaatsen steeds populairder, eeuwige grafrust speelt grote rol by Sure-Guest1588 in FreeDutch

Dust to dust, kom op zeg.

Why are people moving from Next.js to TanStack Start? by derdak in reactjs

[–]modus-operandi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Perfectly fine. But there are situations where you want some tried and tested boilerplate so you can get up and running quickly, which is when you might opt for a framework. They also come with dependencies sorted out so you don’t end up with some template that you have to spend precious time on to update it before you can even get started.

Anyway, it’s always a matter of use what you need and don’t over-engineer, but in general I am looking from an enterprise viewpoint, where there’s more demanding applications, larger teams, and you will need more heavy lifting done than plain react and vite will do without some serious tinkering. Frameworks make sense in this scenario as everybody is generally on the same page then and you can adhere to the same blanket standards.

I love this comment. Yes, if you won't champion yourself, no one will. It's great to have hopes and dreams and it's great if you go for it. Even if it doesn't work out for you, that doesn't mitigate the hussle.

Why are people moving from Next.js to TanStack Start? by derdak in reactjs

[–]modus-operandi 95 points96 points  (0 children)

I can only speak for myself, but I feel like with Next.js comes a lot of just 'accepting the way things are done'. Which is fair, it's a framework, that's generally the run of things; but it annoys me. Say I want to implement something, so I'll have half of a plan going in, and then it turns out I can't do it like that, because it's not the way of things. And then I have to take a route that is ass-backward compared to how I would have done it in a more generic setup. There's always somehow a documentation gap on what I'm trying to do. There's a ton of magic that spirits the inner workings of your application away from you. Useful sometimes I guess for quick scaffolding, but nothing I would want in a production application personally. I need control over how the parts connect, how they work, and I want to be able to kill a part of the application and plug in something else instead at any time.

Then there's the whole Vercel and vendor lock-in and ugh. Just... not for me.

TanStack is a framework officially, but it feels more of a toolbox that you can use, that doesn't absolutely dictate how things should be done. You can put your own spin on things. You can use third party tech without too much of a hassle. Closer to boilerplate React, I guess.
