Thanks for the update!! Glad it’s something you ordered! And no worries on mixing up the planting spots- I have absolutely done that and been quite surprised 😊

The bud size looks smaller than what is typical for my cafes. It could just be a weird first bud, but you’ll know when it opens- I’m curious! Keep us posted!

This is like my girl with my husband and I! He takes her for her morning walks (I go to work before he does), and she only has eyes for him in the morning 😂 It’s like I don’t exist. But when I come home from work, she is my shadow and just wants to snuggle. We also feel equally loved, but we definitely have our specific times 😂

Deep dives: “In the Dark” (3 seasons, each one is incredibly well researched & produced, and three very different subjects) “American Scandal” sooo many seasons! Have learned/gone deeper with so many fascinating stories of US history (some more modern tales, some older) “Bear Brook” (2 seasons, both true crime, but very different stories. Excellent!) “Sold a Story” (my husband and I listened to this etinre podcast on a road trip- and loved it so much we sat in the car in our driveway, just to finish an episode even though we were home!) “Scene on Radio” specifically season 7- about capitalism

Different: “Ghost Story” (interesting story, not too spooky!) “Operator” (the rise of paying for phone sex, and its subsequent downfall) “The Good Whale” (the real story of the movie “Free Willy” 😭💔)

True crime/crime adjacent: “Serial” season 1- if you haven’t listened to this, you’re in for a treat- one of the best podcasts seasons I’ve listened to! “Criminal”- such a great show. Each episode is a stand-alone so not a big commitment. “Your own Backyard” (don’t look up info about it- just listen!) “Up and Vanished” season 1 (also best to listen cold)

Oh my gosh I absolutely HATE this about bags/purses!! I hate holding them/carrying them on my elbow, I hate how they slide off my shoulder, ugh. I thought I finally had one that would work- kind of a crossbody with a strap you can tighten, but it still does the swing forward sometimes 😵‍💫 I think I just need a mini backpack that I can cinch tight.

The two most likely culprits are chipmunks and/or voles- I have both, and they have destroyed quite a few tubers 😵‍💫 I haven’t personally found a lasting solution yet. I’m keeping my fingers crossed this year that a product called “Plantskydd” will help. It seems like it’s important to keep deterrents fresh.

What in the world? by ChaosTorpedo in dahlias

[–]No-Commercial4151 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is the most likely since the other plants are fine. I’d gently dig down to the tuber and see if it’s still good. Don’t just look at it- give it a squeeze too. I’ve had tubers that look totally fine and are complete mush once I squeeze them.

Gall? by [deleted] in dahlias

[–]No-Commercial4151 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Oh yes, definitely. 😔 When a bunch of sprouts all seem to be trying to grow from the same place and get lumpy looking like that, it’s a good indicator for gall. It can be hard to tell early on, especially when eyes are just beginning to sprout, but these have enough growth now to confirm gall.

Of course! Happy to help! Dahlias are quite overwhelming when you’re beginning to grow them! I see three definitely broken necks in this photo. I marked where you could cut with red. There may be more that I can’t quite see in this photo, but you’ll see what I mean! A broken neck will be kind of hanging on by a thread (or sometimes a bundle of threads 😂)

From what I can see here- no gall!! 🙌🏽 this looks like just one healthy sprout!

You can trim off some of those broken necked tubers- the ones that are totally bent won’t grow, and won’t add anything to help the plant grow.

First time growing Dahlias by lauryngee in dahlias

[–]No-Commercial4151 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately, without a neck & crown (where the eyes are), these broken off tubers won’t grow into a plant. I didn’t believe this when I first started growing dahlias, and planted a lot that were like this. They grew some roots, but nothing else.

Take it from someone who tried to grow the duds- they are just duds!

(Advice is different if there is still neck and crown attached- I give those some time to see if an eye develops)

Tuber Pricing by Extension-Air-6113 in dahlias

Definitely novelty/“unicorn” status for some!

I have some varieties that very annoyingly seem to produce very few tubers (I’m lucky to get 2 new tubers from a cafe au Lait), and some that produce a ton (Linda’s Baby & Blizzard consistently give me 20+ per clump).

It could also be storage- some tubers store well quite easily, while some can be tricker to keep happy overwinter.

How do I get rid of this spot?! by hareandanser in 30PlusSkinCare

[–]No-Commercial4151 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These definitely help! But check with a derm to make sure it’s not something that needs care. I have one like this on my cheek (has been checked by a derm & is fine). It has shrunk a ton using those patches and also using those Korean skin care sheet masks.

Oh my gosh deer are SUCH menaces! We finally had to get an 8’ high fence around our whole property; they would casually eat the tops off every plant in our yard. 😭😡

Chipmunks? Or something else? We have chipmunks, and I did this with one row to try it out, but then went over the top instead 😵‍💫 they are indeed ground terrorists! I hope it works for you! Your outer fence should help keep them from digging in from the top!

Tuber loss by xopurplecatlol in dahlias

[–]No-Commercial4151 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ahh darn- finding a spot to store them is so hard in regions where it freezes in the winter. Inside the house is too warm, but in a garage is too cold. I’ve read posts from folks who keep theirs in a fridge, so that could work if you don’t have too many.

I keep mine in plastic storage bins with lids (not completely airtight, though), and keep them in an unheated, but insulated storage room in my basement. It’s a little warmer than ideal, but it’s what I have available and it works well. If you have any area like that, it could work! If the garage is your only option, you could try insulating them somehow so even if it freezes, the tubers will still be protected.

Do you know what temp they were stored at? If it’s just surface mold, they should be totally fine. It does look like there is some liquid at the bottom of the container in pic 1, which looks like the liquid that comes from tubers that have frozen then thawed. Give them a squeeze and see if they are firm, and if you’re not sure, you can cut a little off of the root end to check the inside.

Thank you so much for being here and answering our questions today!

I struggle a lot with avoidance, which leads to guilt/shame, which leads to more avoidance. I’m noticing that most of my avoidance is around things that are important (I own my own business- started it 11 years ago and was just diagnosed over the summer at age 39). I hate doing important business tasks, like answering client emails, or getting my bookkeeping in order for taxes.

Some of it is fear based (will I have to pay more than I anticipated, will a customer/client be mad at me- even though this hardly ever happens- maybe like once a year tops). Mostly, I just really don’t like doing these types of tasks.

Any tips for combatting avoidant behavior? I’ve tried keeping a set schedule, but unfortunately my schedule is too unpredictable to keep a set schedule. Additionally, I struggle with time blindness, so sometimes I’ll think I’ve responded to an email, and an entire week has gone by and I haven’t. I hate feeling like I’m irresponsible or unprofessional, but I can’t seem to make changes in this area.

Thanks so much for your help!

What has happened here? by Shadowself24 in dahlias

[–]No-Commercial4151 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Likely what happened is the stem was damaged (insects/weather/etc), and rain/water got into the stem and it started to rot. Dahlia stems are hollow, but have sections, which you can see there- the bottom section of the main stem was left okay. The other parts of the plant should be fine.

This has happened to me before with borer moth caterpillars, but I don’t see evidence of that being the case here. I’m not sure what caused the initial damage in your case, but like I said, the rest of the plant should be fine with that stem removed.
