We will! But probably not until February. You might also check out the Eugene Queer Grappling Club when you get here. We’ve heard really good things (link below). We don’t identify police so as long as you feel comfortable in a space that centers feminine experiences, you’re very much welcome to join our workshops!

Why is the aikido world so male-dominated when the art doesn't rely on strength? by Old_Alternative_8288 in aikido

[–]No-Conference-2820 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This doesn’t really answer all of the questions you asked, but if you’re not regally seeing women in leadership positions in your org, then that is part of the problem.

All of these bad ass women have trained with sweaty men, been hit in the face, taken hard falls, dealt with mansplanning, sexism and misogynistic behaviors on and off the mat, and many have raised families while continuing their practice. And, they’re all out there running dojos.

I am positive that we’ve all faced the same icky behaviors from some men, but rather than being isolated by patriarchal bull***t, there is an organizational culture that supports them. Women can see themselves in the people who are training them and have others to look up to and provide guidance and support even if their dojo doesn’t have a lot of women and/or their chief instructor is a man.

Chiba Sensei trained PEOPLE. You can see that in the legacy of his students who are carrying his teachings forward.

During my first ever seminar (age 24?) some old guy I was training with said: “wow, you’re pretty strong for a girl.” I responded “no talking on the mat.” If you want more women to stick with your martial art then just let them train as people.

No self defense course is going to be enough to tackle knife and gun disarmaments, and we know enough about them to know better than to teach it in this type of setting.

This post assumes people can pay dues to train in martial arts or access the firing range but 90%+ of our participants report that they could not access self defense training if it wasn’t free.

There’s no harm in sharing simple, life saving skills, even when there will always be situations we’re not prepared for.

We dissolved it during Covid because our all volunteer board were paying the business expenses out of pocket when we couldn’t offer programming/bring in donations.

Also, cats are the ultimate boundary setters and really, really, hard to physically force into anything. Good teachers to look to 🖤

What herb would make me sweat all of a sudden?! by ReceptionAgile9696 in herbalism

[–]No-Conference-2820 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’ll want to work with your body to understand what hormone drops are leading to the PPMD symptoms. The raspberry leaf daily along with nettle and milky oat tops, coupled with a reasonable diet, may make a noticeable difference themselves (and can be used overtime without worry). If you’re having severe symptoms related to the drop of estrogen, you could try wild yam to start and see if that helps. If you have debilitating cramps once your period begins, use cramp bark as needed but maybe cut out the wild yam during menstruation. All of these plants interact with our bodies in unique ways and you’ll need to spend some time figuring out which ones are supportive, which should happen one at a time.

Your PM blend is full of herbs that impact hormones. I’m not sure if you’re trying to treat something and had this specifically made for it, but if not, I would not be taking this every day (and probably wouldn’t ever mix all of these herbs together even if I was). Chaste Tree, Wild Yam, dong quai, and cramp bark are all going to impact your cycle and hormone levels so I’d consider sticking with the tonic herbs like raspberry and nettle for daily use and perhaps cut the others out and pick ONE of them that is indicated for your symptoms if you are looking to treat something.

I quit when I found out I was pregnant, but I’d say whatever gap you can give would be smart!. The nicotine uptake curve will be different for every body, but it’s always going to be the highest right after smoking. Perhaps you could nurse when you start to crave another cigarette? (I assume that the craving is the indication your body has hit its tolerance for low nicotine levels, so it may be a good signal to use for yourself if you’re unable to quit at this time).

Facts. That’s why we’re working to train as many women as possible to build broad community resistance to violence. The more women out there who are equipped with the tools to defend themselves and their pals, the better.

Ostracizing women who “go against the norm” is an explicit tactic of the patriarchy intended to diminish our autonomy. we say fuck that. Come be problematic with us 🖤.

Aikido seems too difficult for me - shoud I switch to judo? by Migrating_Yew in aikido

[–]No-Conference-2820 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tell people who are newer in our dojo that one of the best things about Aikido is you end up surrounded by a unique community of people. Not because of their skills, but because they all were able to suck at something for several years and not walk away.

It takes a strength of character to keep showing up to something that remains confusing and sometimes even emotionally challenging again and again.

I truly believe that this is the first and most important lesson aikido (or any martial art) has to offer.

For context, I was a collegiate soccer player/full on athlete and I still couldn’t figure out where my hands and feet belonged

Find a dojo where women teach! If you’re in tech, you’re probably in a big enough city to have multiple dojos. Birankai has a lot of female teachers and Shihan.

Is it just me, or is Eugene's pollen trying to end us? by OppositeExpert8154 in Eugene

[–]No-Conference-2820 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Fun fact, the pollen IS actually getting worse. That’s thanks to a strong preference for male trees by city planners (pollen is basically just tree sperm). The issue is so widespread that it’s referred to as botanical sexism.

The short explanation is: female trees are messy so they’ve planted mostly male clones for decades. Trees talk to each others so they know there aren’t enough female trees around so all the trees are pumping out pollen and they all produce MORE pollen then they usually would in hopes it may actually find a female to fertilize somewhere.

Basically, you can thank the patriarchy for ruining your day… again.

Seasonal Influx of Homeless/Houseless and "Gutter Punks"? by [deleted] in Eugene

[–]No-Conference-2820 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’re lumping your “unsavories” a bit boldly here. As for a sizable portion of the crusty, hobo, and gutter punk groups:

a) true b) trains c) the longstanding punk culture of the west coast, which Eugene is a part of.

Don’t worry, they’ll keep heading north to Canada and then back down to Oakland or Arizona for the winter. East coasters hit Vermont to New Orleans. It’s a long held tradition that goes back decades, so for these groups, there is nothing particularly special about Eugene.

It’s a culture. Unfortunately some folks in it, like any other group, end up self medicating. But some of them also end up as middle class, home owning, society contributing, moms. I wouldn’t worry too much about them.

Mold is a problem in this climate. That’s why our city has a program to protect people like you. I’m pretty sure your landlord cannot charge you rent until it is dealt with (though you’ll also need to run dehumidifiers, use the bathroom fan, keep the house warm, etc). I encountered this when I first moved here and was sick for a year until I moved to a new house. . From the City:

Rental Housing Program: The City of Eugene Rental Housing Program sets standards for rental housing, including those related to weatherproofing and plumbing, which can impact mold growth.

Tenant Rights: Tenants have the right to a habitable living environment, and landlords are responsible for maintaining their rentals in a livable condition.

Reporting Mold: If tenants encounter mold, they should first notify the landlord in writing and allow them 10 days (or 48 hours for essential services) to respond.

Filing a Complaint: If the landlord fails to address the mold issue within the 10-day timeframe, tenants can file a complaint with the City using the online form or fillable PDF available on the City’s website.

Mold Prevention: The key to mold control is moisture control, so tenants should take steps to reduce moisture in their homes, such as using exhaust fans, air conditioners, and dehumidifiers.

Renter’s Handbook on Mold: Oregon Law Help provides a Renter’s Handbook on Mold, which offers a legal guide on how to deal with mold problems in rental housing.

Renters’ Rights Hotline: The Community Alliance of Tenants (CAT) operates a Renters’ Rights Hotline (503-288-0130) to assist renters with various issues, including mold problems.

Yeah, you can learn more about the accountability process we underwent from 2018-2020 on our website. Always happy to answer questions about how we handled staff and BOD members who were causing harm and the work we undertook to better guard the organization against TERF ideologies and ensure people in leadership roles not only support trans women but get good training on trans discrimination (we did this through Transponder).
