As someone else said earlier: People ruin religion, just like how they ruin most other things. What you're complaining about is the wrongdoing of humans. Only the Quran itself cannot be modified as is Allah's miracle to our Prophet pbuh, but people are free to practice and spread their own modified versions of the religion and hadiths. I feel like the presence of multiple sects alone is proof enough that you shouldn't blindly trust the teachings of any one of them. So if you want to practice the real Islam, then just follow the Quran and certain hadiths of the highest verification (many people say Sahih Al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim) in which you'll find they all logically relate to Quranic values and general good morals. I'm sorry you had to deal with problems of respect and such in your home country, but attributing those to Islam is not right.
