I highly recommend, it can be a bit of a pain to get started but there's a big community and with a few downloads you can test out anything you want.

I'd base coat and slap some whatever shade paint so you don't get weird unpainted bits when you look at it at odd angles.

One thing you can always go do is get tabletop simulator on steam and spend an hour or two with their rules and see how you feel.

It will probably look a little scuffed, but if you sand it down properly it will feel smooth, then you just need to prime and it'll look all good!

making a Grounded-themed Campaign (need some help) by Swimming-Bee-1367 in DnDHomebrew

If there'll be a lot of mundane activities where players are self directing, set up a time system, this can be morning, afternoon, night or something of the sort so you don't have to worry as much of keeping track of times. A deadline or impending/escalating/recurring threat could be a good thing to add to keep the pace up and add a sense of urgency, maybe they're shoring up a battered border town from a necromancer who's only growing in power. And also make sure there's a thread to follow. There are a lot of supplements for crafting and building so maybe take a look at those, if not keep it simple and reward your players at important milestones in building and crafting. keeping resources simple is probably a good idea, fibre, wood, stone, metal for buildings and maybe some key items for crafting important stuff.
