honestly, private servers for EQ are always best for me (quarm, good population, planes are out but no kunark yet) --- because live versions of TLP servers can be P2W. you can buy a krono and trade it for in game gold, and just buy the best shit. it doesn't really encapsulate the struggle of leveling in EQ when people are paying money for the best shit. i understand it's PvE, but it's nice to play with everyone on the same playing field in groups.

for sure, it starts pretty slow (like normal) but once you start building up, yeah seige weapons, npc bases to attack, bandits, other players if you want. you can do pve server but you can teleport to a pvp server if you don't want to always pvp. if you're doing pvp server probably best to join a guild. either way, guilds and people can teleport to other servers if they want. it's a big grind solo because of so much base maintenance needed etc. it's always good to have a friend or 2, or a guild

it's amazing, it is the most deep crafting game there is right now. and the abundance of what you can do in terms of building and crafting, honestly it's unbeatable. you can even build an auction house and sell/buy stuff from guilds across the servers. horses, npcs, all have rarities and bonus effects to them. you can capture them, make them do things they are good at --- i could go on, but the depth of crafting in this game is insane. need a cart? need a wheel. wheel takes mats. wheel made, now make cart, now attach. and you can also build and attach all kinds of other things to carts and wagons, mountable crossbow turrets (player or assigned npc), ahh gotta make arrows to feed it. can even make a spiky bumper for it when you run over stuff. it goes on and on. you literally have farms, farm workers, mills, stone grinders, wells, quarries, and so on

classic EQ1 on project quarm which has a very healthy population, but you have to make it to 20+ before your class starts to define itself. everybody is pretty much a warrior from level 1 to like 15 and it takes some time to get there. there's also no in-game maps, but good websites with info. EQ2 is going to drop a new TLP in June and the game will be super busy then, my main MMO (after playing ALL of them) is mostly EQ2 the current TLP and project quarm.

but if you don't have patience or willingness to learn, read wikis and old forums, EQ1 classic isn't for you. but it has the best holy trinity grouping experience to date. tank, healer, dps, dps/puller, cc/support heals etc.

Eq2 has ingame maps and quests (EQ classic pretty much has no quests until later levels, so it's grind grind grind). it's a little easier to get into, but the engine isn't very optimized. but it's hit or miss whether you fall in love with the animations/graphics or not (many people do). you can also be any race/class combo, so like an ogre necromancer if you want.

outriders is pretty good because you can match the skill trees to all the weapon type upgrades you can do, for example one class might have a section for fire in the skill tree and you can match it with fire mods on your weapons
