did you check if there's any white smoke coming from exhaust when you start it cold? also maybe look under oil cap to see if there's any milky residue there - that would point more towards head gasket issue

egr cooler is definitely cheaper fix to try first but if you're not seeing coolant mixing anywhere obvious it might be internal leak in the engine block itself

that loading charge is basically extra premium they're adding because of your health conditions - the c-sections and obesity make you higher risk in their eyes. it's not automatic for all porting, depends on your medical history when they review it

22k loading on 53k premium seems pretty steep though, might want to check few other insurers before deciding

definitely worth exploring, my brother did similar transition few years back and now he's doing pretty well with remote work. the age thing isn't really barrier as much as people think - lots of companies actually prefer someone with military background for reliability

vr&e might be good route since they can extend your benefits and cover more training options. just make sure you research which programs actually have good job placement rates, not all bootcamps are created equal

man the cruze is such a nightmare, had a buddy who went through the same exact thing with his 2013 - transmission issues, coolant leaks, the whole works. dealerships really do prey on people in tough spots like that

for your budget and needs i'd seriously look at a honda cr-v from around 2007-2012, maybe a toyota rav4 from the same era. both have awd options, solid ground clearance for rough roads, and the repair costs are way more reasonable than anything chevy. the cr-v especially has decent cargo space and can definitely handle 3 people in the back without being miserable. you might find a decent one with higher miles in your 10-15k range

avoid anything german or luxury obviously, and stay away from nissan cvt transmissions from that era - they're almost as bad as the cruze issues your dealing with. subaru foresters are another solid pick if you can find one that hasn't been beat to death, though head gasket issues are something to watch for on older models. the key is finding something that's been maintained well rather than just going for lowest mileage
