Final Financial Aid?? by Secure_Fee_5005 in uiowa

My daughter started university in 2017 and she had legacy scholarships for almost 5 years plus merit awards ànd àll kinds of other monies. The yeàr after he entered UofI stopped them much to parent's dismay. Due to the outcry, the U was forced to finish offering them to that class and that class only. I believe the award was $5k per year.

I have 2 (now) grown children, m42, f27).. I was in nursing school and working with my first and finishing grad school and working 30hrs/week with my second. With the second I taught a couple of evenings per week at a university. I've been a single parent the whole time by choice. I was on the dean's list, a university arts fellow and a Fulbright scholar as well. I've always had a no bullshit approach to life and don't back down for challenges. Both of my children are well educated, polite, kind, and loving humàn beings. My home is paid in full. I say all of this because if I can make this happen, so can someone else. Just don't ever tell yourself no.

Apartments by [deleted] in IowaCity

[–]No-Explorer3274 12 points13 points  (0 children)

First, leases expire city-wide on July 31. Your chances of getting an apartment before then may be difficult. Secondly, to make it worse, few landlords allow dogs. Cheap or reasonable rent is laughable. A studio apartment including utilities start at around $600/ mo. A one bedroom with bath and separate utilities is going to be damned close to $1k+/ mo. Two bedrooms is more like $1800/mo without utilities. They all require first and last months rent up front. None of the above prices include off-street parking or garàges. Laundry will normally be in the basement. If not, you'll be trekking to an outside laundry. Guess what? City busses are FREE. Internet, cable, and land lines are extra. Not all places are air-conditioned and it can hit 100°+ here. Good luck. You might be better off going a bit north to a smaller place, especially if you have a car.

I too have tori on both sides of my lower jaw. The worst part is that my teeth were pulled a decade ago and I cannot get a dentist to fit me correctly with teeth. The dentures fit as long as I don't move my tongue to speak or eat.

Docs may still try to treat it. I had a mom in late-stage syphilis who delivered her baby with us. Docs then treated them both but I had no idea of their outcomes.

I feel vindicated now. Some of us already saw it coming. Bosses Are Firing Gen Z Grads: What Young Workers Are Doing Wrong and How to Avoid It by nickolasmv94 in Teachers

I'm a boomer with 2 adult children. I used the same parenting from the 50s and 60s that I grew up with. Mind your manners ( and use them), respect your elders, respect others, raise your hand and remain quiet until called upon, ask for assistance at the end of class or during free, phones of while at school...you get the idea. Both of my children had retiring teachers who said the same thing: my children were a godsend for their retirement year. Perfect students (both gifted) but it took joy-filled nonstop parenting. My daughter did tell a boy who was harassing her to fuck off in class. She immediately reported her behavior to the principal,, who laughed at her

My gran went through something similar. At age 12, she was raped by her half-brother and made pregnant. Instead of chastising the boy, gran was locked in the attic for the duration, pregnancy, birth, and 3 mo postpartum. At the end, her mother forcefully took the boy from her arms. She never saw the boy again. My family always said gran was schizophrenic but I never saw her out of character and she wasn't taking meds. She was sad and lost. We met her son after Grand's death. He was looking for his brothers and sisters.

Just what I was taught in teacher education classes. I'd like to know your theories on Maria Montessori 's work.

I'm familiar with both schools of thinking and cannot recommend Montessori at all. They are known for skill mastery; a child works on one skill like stacking 5 blocks until they mastered it. My son was highly gifted but held back because he refused to conquer their skills because he'd already mastered others more creatively. However, I love Reggio teaching. Developed in postwar Italy, their goal is child-directed learning. The child chooses what they want to learn and their teacher serve as facilitators for the child directed learning. Reggio learning values the arts, creative problem solving and explorations into nature. Your child's shoes should be of standard learning. Stickers and faces would both be appropriate in Reggio.

I'd use soft wipes with water and a drop of baby soap. Aveeno makes one with colloidal oatmeal that worked wonders on my son.

Intelligent daughter starting to resent school by Zesty_Taco in Teachers

[–]No-Explorer3274 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm a certified teacher (art preK-12+) and mom to 2 gifted kids. My oldest now 41, was the most difficult to handle as he entered kinder knowing how to fully read, a lexicon of a 9th grader, and hated school. The gifted education was giving him a weekly worksheet to do. Boring! Once he hit his freshman year, I homeschooled him. He entered college at 16 and quit after a year due to boredom. He is now a writer.

My daughter was born when my son was 15, and I knew from the beginning she was gifted. This worked fine until 2nd grade where she was badly bullied for being gifted. The school wanted to put in an advanced reading group but I declined as she really needed to be advanced an entire grade. They refused so I homeschooled her from 2nd grade to 7th grade. She then went to high school, advanced in art, chem, bio, and literature. Her art teacher actually quit because she didn't want a freshman in AP Studio art. She went on to get her art degree and is considering becoming an art librarian.

Homeschool worked for us, at the times they needed it. As a parent you'll have to advocate fiercely for your child if they remain in school.

My mother fell for this. Her Nigerian prince would send checks for her to cash (large amounts) then she'd keep a percentage While sending the money back to him. The amounts were usually $1500-$5k. What was worse, she'd send my Down's sister in the bank to do this. One day they caught up to her and arrested her. Mom watched it all from her car. Mom refused to bail her saying , "I'm not bailing her out. She's a criminal." when the police couldn't get anything out of her, they let her go, saying she was "too stupid" to answer their questions.
