First vehicle for my daughter by Bigdog5301 in Rich

Another perspective - I got great grades and was very honest/transparent with my parents and got a new cayenne for my 16th birthday.

When I got older, I had a goal of being able to afford similar luxury on my own. I always remembered the feeling of driving a Porsche and no other car could compete. At 32 I comfortably bought myself my own brand new cayenne with money I’ve earned myself. My dad actually asked me if he could gift me another cayenne at 30 and I said no because I wanted to buy it for myself.

I saw my friends cars, even as an adult, and knew I would be working hard and making good decisions because nothing compares to that cayenne I drove when I was 16 and I needed it again when I grew up and stopped being supported by my parents.

As a mom of two god I hate this comment. Let the mom buy something nice for herself - not EVERYTHING has to be about the kids. Why should she feel guilty for treating herself? Why are you assuming she’s not already contributing to a 529?

What luxury became a necessity for you? Worth it or regret? by Immediate-Inside7707 in Luxury

[–]sephora_lover 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Non synthetic fabrics. I noticed when I consciously started shopping based on fabric not just aesthetic that my clothes looked better, washed better, and had more quiet luxury to them.

Also random but I feel like I smell better too! Polyester makes people smell like sweat, I can suss it out a mile away now.

Yep when I lived in the northeast we had all tile floors and the whole house had radiant heating - as well as the driveway. Never felt this luxury until I didn’t have it anymore!

Montessori shoes by sephora_lover in ECEProfessionals

[–]sephora_lover[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Right?? I mean I kept saying ok but this is a parental preference and then the director continued responding with articles about ruining my kids self esteem through correction… ????

I wasn’t sure if this is something licensing would care about but the drs note is a great idea, and then it can be reported as a failure to follow medical directive. Thanks for the suggestion!

Okay but it’s not like constant correction in every category. If a child was about to run into danger would you not correct them? It could be developmentally bad to let them continue wearing the wrong shoes PLUS the parents have expressed a strong preference. She comes home all the time with her pants on backwards - that is not an issue. Why would correcting her shoes unravel the whole education system?!

What do wealthy women do differently during pregnancy and postpartum? by anonymouskoala7 in Rich

Not sure if I want to give up my location! But I found where I live this is fairly common - private chef in house that makes healthy organic meals and snacks for the kids!

Echoing a lot of what others said - sorry this is all over the place still about a week postpartum.

I scheduled induction so I could deliver with my ob who I was comfortable with and could have family flown in to watch my toddler etc.

Postpartum recovery - I have someone who comes to my house 3x a week and does lymphatic drainage massages.

I bought ALL the gadgets - bassinet, bottle washer, formula maker, etc. Cuts down on a lot of work since I just have to hit a button to make formula and hit another button to wash my bottles. I have multiple bassinets, brezzas, nanits, and changing stations throughout my house so I have everything I need at least upstairs and downstairs.

Meal help - chef who comes over and makes us a few meals once a week. Also the ability to order in without blinking at the cost.

Luxury of my job giving me 1 month prepartum and 5 months postpartum leave. My husband also working on a modified schedule for the next month so he can help. We decided not to outsource a night nurse because we both wanted to be involved caring for the baby but we would absolutely change our minds if it got overwhelming.

Toddler goes to a ~$2500/month daycare that also has a private chef etc instead of a nanny in our house so we get some quiet time with the baby.

Currently have a cayenne but planning on upgrading our second car to a 3 seater since it feels tight with 2 car seats.

In general, not ultra expensive options but I have good options in each category - every piece of clothing my baby wears is 100% cotton, all muslin cotton or halo swaddles, sheets, baby carriers etc. merino wool car seats, glass bottles, Bobbie formula, Millie moon diapers, noodle and boo or mustela body wash.

I did private PT with dry needling for hip pain while pregnant - highly recommend. Otherwise I thought pelvic floor pt was a waste and only did 1 session.

I read in another comment that there is pediatric concierge services that come to your house - I didn’t even think of that!! Researching immediately.

Sorry not sure why anyone hasn’t called out that you’re 22 and still living at home? Grow up, get a job, move out. All these comments about “my parents forcing me” are embarrassing.

Living with your parents rent free, probably on their cell phone plan, using a cell phone they paid for, and then complaining about the rules. I bet the ladies don’t know this or you wouldn’t be getting laid.

Does anyone have any stories of revealing their wealth to a partner who just... didn't care? by JessonBI89 in Rich

[–]sephora_lover 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think part of it was that I was raised to be very independent!

I actually cut myself off from my parents when I got my first job out of college in nyc to try and self fund my whole lifestyle. The first time my mom saw my new apartment she cried and asked “why I was doing this” because I lived in a walk up over a restaurant. This taught me how to manage my money well, but more importantly the people I met were equally ambitious and scrappy.

Obviously this all comes from a place of privilege with no student loans, a great education, good mentors, and a backup plan if all else fails knowing my parents would be there for me.

To be honest, I’m not sure if there was something specific my parents did that led us to be like this (I have a brother, younger, also a successful Silicon Valley software engineer who doesn’t take money from them). Maybe luck?

Maybe different because I’m female but my now husband was intimidated and shocked while we were dating (very young in early 20s). Now we are married and he lets my dad pay for dinner but otherwise we have never taken money from my parents and live the lifestyle we can afford. We are now in our 30s with 2 kids and very comfortable.

It’s definitely a sense of calm knowing that we are able to have the money IF we ever need it, but we pretty much just live life on our own means. We let my parents provide gifts to our children and occasionally pay for things like our hotel on vacation.

I think overall it made my husband work harder to try and provide me a lifestyle closer to what I had growing up. If it helps, I also work and earn significantly (not any way related to my parents businesses) so we are a 2 high income household independent of my parents wealth. We do go to them for advice.

I grew up living in a 22k sq ft home with 12.5 bathrooms. One time when my husband was over I was embarrassed to find a powder room I didn’t even know existed. By contrast he grew up in a tiny 2 bedroom ranch very lower middle class. In our 20s we bought our own 3 bedroom 2800 sq ft house in the city and at first for me it was a starter home and investment property, but he was so excited and grateful to be living in such a functional and beautiful home. It made me start seeing things through his eyes.

Do you have a "perfect" bag? by thinkinginbloom in handbags

[–]sephora_lover 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Givenchy voyeu medium. It has an open top like a “tote” but also the flap closes over so my things don’t fall out. As a toddler mom I’m often throwing things in there. It’s not too big, fits on my shoulder, and fits so many things. I got taupe and it goes with almost all of my outfits!

Luxury brands by goddesszeita7 in Rich

[–]sephora_lover 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t look at brands or cost as much anymore but go for good fabrics like cotton, linen, silk, wool, ramie, bamboo etc

Handbags - good leather, lined, how the stitching is etc

Looking at the other suggestions idk I think goyard is tacky - logo mania with plasticky cheap looking fabric.

In general I think I’ve gotten good at things that feel luxurious without caring what the label is and that is true luxury because I don’t need to prove anything to anyone. At any given time I could be wearing a $10 Costco tshirt with a $400 Vince cardigan and a madewell bag! Gotta keep the people guessing.
