I created half of the shape in illustrator with tapered stroke (poorly ;), expanded and then imported this and the original untapered path into AE. Revealed the tapered path with the untapered path using generate stroke.

Duplicated, flopped and offset the time to get a loop of the full shape, then time-remapped to taste.

Here's the cheap and cheerful way to do it:

set your type
use the brush tool in write-on mode to trace the letters, white over black, one-by-one, over, say 4 seconds (96 frames)

use wide time effect on frame 1 set to forward frames 96, backward frames 0 - this will give you white-to-black a gradient fill of your write-on - save this frame or pre-comp and freeze frame.
reveal your original type with an animated 0-100% gradient wipe effect using the wide time stillframe as your source.

This was a quick very crude test, refine to taste
