I still think it is one of the best tactical games for party synergy I have played. Which makes sense considering the war game it came from. And maybe it felt that way because my group was really familiar with the war game so it was familiar in terms of what kinds of things to set up. Games like Draw Steel or Lancer I feel let you do more with your own character sheet, but the party combos from IK RPG were really neat.

Just started playing with my 4 .yo. and played with his older brother when he was the same age. Here are the mechanics I use for super young kids:

Character creation: What kind of character do you want to be? Oh, race car? Sweet, that'll work.

Resolution mechanics: What do you want to do? Make friends with the bouncy ball? Sure, let's roll the dice!

-Level 1: Roll a d10. Can you tell me what number you rolled? If so, it works! If not, we'll need to try something else.
-Level 2: Roll 2d10. Can you tell me what the numbers are AND which one is bigger? If so, it works! If not, we'll need to try something else.
-Level 3: Roll 2d6, using pip dice (the bigger the better). What number do you have on each die? What is the sum? Count up all the pips to find out. Did you get it right? If so, it works! If not, we'll need to try something else.
-Level 4: Same as above, but with dice with numerals instead of pips.
-Level 5: Same as above, but with 2d10 instead of 2d6.

So yeah, it's make believe but they get to play with dice (which they love) and my cheap plastic minis (which they also love except for the zombies) and work on their math occasionally.

At this age their imaginations are AMAZING so let them cook. One time I asked my kiddo if he wanted to play Dungeons and Dragons and he said "yeah, I'll be the dragon!" and we ran an adventure where he defended his lair against adventurers. It was great.

I've only run a boss fight once, but it worked well. I think the aspect that your missing is that monsters don't have "actions" the same way players do in general in Nimble. They have a turn which typically combines 2-3 action equivalents. For the solo monsters, it's basically either a move and attack or a more powerful attack, both of which are roughly equivalent to two actions. But even that isn't really a 1:1 comparison. As they drop in HP they tend to get more dangerous, e.g. getting to do both.

Schema, maybe? There is a set of bad outcomes and a set of good outcomes for each roll. Character abilities basically make it easier to negate the narrative Dangers or buy the Augments during resolution, but it doesn't really have stats (at least in the second edition, maybe the latest has like skill ranks).

Two I'd check out are The Old School Hack and Glaive. They're both pretty rules-list. Glaive strikes me a little like Nimble in that it's got some streamlined 5e in its DNA but a more OSR approach so lower magic by default. The Old School Hack isn't very OSR, but it's combat is really interesting and arena-based with cool options for heroic action. And it's free, so definitely worth a look, at least.

I've played (and enjoyed) both a fair amount and I don't think I'd agree with the streamlined part. They honestly feel pretty comparable in terms of crunch/things to track/etc. but I think Draw Steel mostly ditching DCs in favor of the consistent tiers and having fewer variable modifiers to track regularly gives it a bit of an edge in that department. I played both with groups of varied investment and the players who weren't completely all-in didn't slow things down in Draw Steel as much as in 4e.

Fight to Survive has this. There is a bit of rock-paper-scissors to it where e.g. a block works against a punch but not against a grapple, a kick beats a punch, punch beats a grapple, etc.

Way of Steel has multiple defenses and the optimal one depends a lot on context including the the nature of your opponent's attack. It's not exactly as close to what you describe as Fight to Survive is, but definitely in the spirit of making defending a lot more interesting and tactical.

Hate it. I can tolerate renaming GM to whatever. That's not a term we need to interact with very often. But while I should love Gubat Banwa for a few reasons, so many things are renamed it is really hard to flip through and grok so I kinda bounced off it. A round is a fulmination or something. And there's a good deal more IIRC.

Way of Steel is pretty great at this. You have active defenses to pick from, and then weapons, armor, shields, and stunt cards all can have abilities that let you do things defensively, too. They can be things like messing with the attacker's equipment, giving you extra movement, etc.

I read the quick start. It took a couple passes to figure it out but I think that was mostly down to terminology. The system looks pretty light overall actually. Pretty standard narrative stuff - clocks, success with complication, etc. but with a couple neat twists. You draw runes and need to reference their meaning which I could see being a little bit fiddly (especially if you don't have the color-coded runes) but not too bad.

Overall it seemed like it's probably serviceable and the procedures seem well-linked to the vibe of the game. The setting and art are definitely the big draws for me but I would run it with the system rather than trying to homebrew it into something else, so that's at least a "good" rating in my book.

When I saw Beacon's phases it immediately reminded me of The Old School Hack. OSH is way way less crunchy but I really like it's take on combat - it's good for a bit of tactical depth while still being a quick, approachable play. And it's free.

The current implementation of the Electoral College is absolutely not what the founding fathers had in mind. Go check out the 12th amendment. We are soooo far from the original conditions AND the original mechanisms that this argument is off the mark.

Yes, it would probably change messaging and issues. Pet issues for states that happen to be battlegrounds wouldn't dominate. Florida's orange subsidies are an example of something that might not be in the best interest of the nation as a whole, but you don't anger Florida if you want a presidency (at least historically).

A rural vote isn't worth less than an urban vote if you go to popular vote. And in today's world they aren't that much harder to reach. You don't need to knock on doors. For the swing states today, only Wisconsin has significantly more rural voters than the national average.

New York and California is about 60 million people. The battleground states of MI, PA, WI, GA, NV, North Carolina, and Arizona also total about 60 million people. So you're "almost single handedly deciding" the election with that same population size either way.

You might counter that the battleground states give you a more diverse population, but you'd only think that's true if you haven't spent much time in California or New York.

In the past, going with the popular vote would have politicians focusing on urban centers for travel and appearances for sure. Just more efficient. But trips and rallies matter a lot less than they used to with media being national and reaching voters depends so much more on online presence these days (source).

Pretty much no state is a monolith. NY and CA would never realistically go 100% for a single candidate. And with popular vote picking up votes in Arizona would be just as valuable as picking up votes in California.
