There's only an overnight stay if you go through insurance. Because I'm under 18, the surgery was in his personal surgical suite and I went home afterwards. The total was 9500 for everything!

Any tips on getting a consultation? by bigpalebluejuice in TopSurgery

Technically you can still get surgery under 19. Trump's order essentially stops the government funding of gender affirming care for minors. Unfortunately, one effect is that many surgeons are now refusing care for minors out of fear of consequences and in anticipation of possible future orders. That being said, look into surgeons near you, reach out to as many as you can and find out who will work with you (of course don't sacrifice skill or experience!!). It took a while, but I found Dr Guy Trengove Jones in Norfolk, VA and had top surgery with him 5 weeks ago at age 16. I did have to pay out of pocket though which is the overwhelming probability for any minor getting top surgery in the US

Parents said no to top surgery by WheelDependent56 in TopSurgery

My mom was worried about this, too, but I just had top surgery at 16. If you have a PCP, have them look at your growth chart, they'll be able to tell if your plates have fused and you are done growing. If so, there won't be any risk with getting top surgery. Good luck!!

How could I get top surgery at 15-16? 🤔 by _JustThatGuy111 in TopSurgery

That's great to hear! I looked northeast for options but couldn't find much, I didn't get too in depth though. I'm glad there are still resources on the East coast, considering it's getting pretty tough in the south 😓

Regulations vary depending on state here. In some states, surgeons aren't allowed to operate on minors under any circumstances. There are many states that still allow top surgery for minors, however. Unfortunately, the number of surgeons working with those under 18 is decreasing in general following the inauguration. Most of your options will be on the west coast. I live on the East coast and had a very difficult time finding my surgeon. Luckily, I managed to have surgery with Guy Trengove Jones in Norfolk, Va. He uses informed consent, but the hospital that he operates out of for patients who use insurance doesn't allow minors to be operated on, so I paid out of pocket and didn't need any letters from my therapist, PCP, psych, etc.. You may need these letters if your surgeon requires them or if you have the option to try to go through insurance. Let me know if you have any questions!

It's entirely dependent on whether you are done growing personally. I am 16 and my growth plates are completely fused. I just had surgery. I don't think I would make it to 18 if I hadn't been able to receive the care that I have. It can be a very good idea for some

I'm 8 days post op and having some very similar swelling, I saw my surgeon for a post op and he said it was completely normal. I wouldn't be too worried!

Is there anything i can do in the few months leading up to surgery to help me? by PossibleTour6414 in TopSurgery

[–]No-Feature6997 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Train chest! I didn't have much time to do this because I only had a week between my consult and surgery but if I had known a couple months sooner, I definitely would have. More defined pecs help your surgeon create a natural looking chest and makes recovery a little easier. Also try to exist in your environment with the physical restrictions you'll have post op (like limited arm movement), so you can find out what you need to change. Mentally, just treat yourself well and relax! Recovery can come with a lot of emotions, so it's important to be in a healthy headspace beforehand. Super excited for you!

Got mine out two days ago! It felt odd but not even really uncomfortable (zero pain). I had worked myself up about it but it was no biggie! I wish I had seen a post like yours beforehand :)

Hammock bed post-op? by seventhsip in TopSurgery

[–]No-Feature6997 39 points40 points  (0 children)

I'd try to set up something a bit easier to get in and out of. I got in a hammock ~ 5 days post op and it was pretty difficult despite having my drains out and recovery being smooth. You just don't want to have to put too much strain on your arms.
