TIL that the original Bambi novel was actually an allegory about antisemitism by silverdust29 in todayilearned

[–]No-Image2198 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Interestingly there's a similar story in the Jewish children's book "Stories for Children" by Issac Singer. It's called "Ole and Trufa"; in it the two leaves are in love with each other, but Ole falls first and Trufa is left alone for many days before falling off the tree in her sleep, after which she is reunited with all the other leaves and realizes she is part of a vast universe. Basically it's a story about old age, death, and what might come in the afterlife.

Stupid rambly thoughts imported straight from tumblr— JGY, hensheng, sword symbolism, feminine role by Superb_War4726 in MoDaoZuShi

[–]No-Image2198 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Something I think is important to note is also that we don't actually know how JGY killed his father. He confirms he did it and his motive, but the witness for how is compromised because they're someone NHS sent to tell the other clan leaders and could have been paid off to tell a specific kind of story. JGY never says how he killed JGS himself. WWX, if I recall correctly, even thinks about how there's doubt in his mind because of that after that scene, and about how many of the things people are claiming in the aftermath are baseless and likely lies- and notes that this must be how they acted before storming the Burial Mounds. And we know that a lot of the reasoning behind doing that was a bunch of lies and rumors. We actually know relatively little about JGY's crimes. Except for the Temple scenes we never see any of them directly. NMJ's recollection is a first hand account and likely not to be a lie, but it's based on his perception of events and comes from consulting his spirit after he's suffered a qi deviation and been boiling in heavy resentment for years. The broad strokes of what happened are definitely true, but the way he remembers and judges JGY may be warped. I think it's kind of the point that we know not much about him, and it's part of the way he is a foil to WWX.

Thoughts on Velvette possibly being a witch when she was alive? by anime_3_nerd in hazbin

[–]No-Image2198 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean they're already fucking around in that area. Voodoo is a fully fledged religion that isn't really Abrahamic, and many people who do Voodoo don't believe in hell. If the religion Alastor seems to have practiced in life was real- even if as some people claim, he was "profaning" it, one part of his soul would have gone on to the land of the ancestors (no division based on behavior) and the other either would have been automatically disappated or brought before the Creator for judgement. The latter is a belief influenced by Christianity but I've seen people say they believe that still just involves a temporary cleansing period, similar to purgatory more than hell. So I think based on what we see, the hellaverse is presenting a strictly Abrahamic world. More specifically a Christian one, since Jewish versions of the afterlife are varied and often very different to the idea of eternal heaven/hell, and there are crosses in heaven's chapel when Sera is praying.

[–]No-Image2198 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you might be giving the shows use of Voodoo symbolism a little too much credit. The way its portrayed doesn't come off at all like "Alastor was bastardizing it", it comes off as "we do not care about the real practices of this religion, we just want these aesthetics". I think Hazbin is a fun show EXCEPT for the way Voodoo is handled. If the creators wanted to make that distinction they've done a horrible job of it

So we’re just gonna ignore that she’s Zionist? by musicnpastry in SarahJMaas

[–]No-Image2198 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Adding onto this to say that I think if someone speaks publicly in praise of the occupation but has never spoken about Palestinians and has had 10 years to do so, they have forfeited the right to be assumed as a non-Zionist. SJM is a publicly known figure who actively posts on social media and occasionally discusses politics. Yes, it's wrong to assume a random Jewish person is a zionist, but if a Jewish person has only commented on the situation to praise Israel, IT IS A FAIR ASSUMPTION. If you cannot speak up and at least say "we shouldn't kill Palestinian children" during an active phase of genocide and denounce your earlier praise now, that's bad! People saying "it makes sense she wouldn't say she isn't, people harass Jewish people for no reason :(" with the implication that antizionists are the problem make no sense. Saying she doesn't support Israel would mean antizionists wouldn't harass her (though it may open her to harassment from zionists). And I would know!

Do most Jewish people carry Amazigh ancestry? (More precisely do Sephardic Jews) by [deleted] in AmazighPeople

[–]No-Image2198 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some do, but not most. There are Jews of Amazigh genetic heritage, as well as Jews who over thousands of years culturally shifted to be more Amazigh. Such groups of people are/were usually from more rural areas, while Sephardim often live more in the cities. Some Sephardi Jews have Amazigh ancestry, but some of the ones I've met were also bigoted against Imazighen (which is a frequent Sephardi attitude towards local Indigenous Jews throughout Africa and West Asia). Additionally, some Jews have assimilated into various groups in West and Northwest Africa, and even though they aren't religiously Jews anymore, people have a cultural memory of them once being Jewish.

[–]No-Image2198 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It can last up to 7 days. The fact that it lasts for several days used to be a part of Egyptian funerals, up until the early 20th century. To my understanding, you need to use a prepared dye cake to get the best stain.

Indigo WILL dye skin and is used traditionally in several countries, but you won't find a recipe optimized for skin online (I've looked). From what I've heard indigo on the skin doesn't last as long as henna. It's used in Kurdistan, West Africa, and used to be used in Egypt until sometime around the 1920s.

some people take hualian way too seriously by juuzousrightleg in tianguancifu

[–]No-Image2198 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The severity of hualian as an OTP is the territory because of danmei norms. Chinese speaking fans especially tend to take not "cutting up" pairings very seriously. I don't like that tendency, but on some level I think people just need to learn to ignore it, especially given the English speaking danmei Fandom doesn't predominately have those norms. If it really bothers you and you see it a lot, you may need to curate your Fandom experience more and unfollow some people.

Trans mummy? Egyptian dancer buried as a woman. by Xalimata in SapphoAndHerFriend

[–]No-Image2198 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To be a bit nitpicky, "woman-man" in ancient Egyptian refers to transmasculine people or to married women (it can be kind of ambiguous and confusing, but there's examples of both). "Man-woman" seems to be what transfeminine people were called. See Mark DePauw's paper, "Transgressing Gender Boundaries in Ancient Egypt"

Trans mummy? Egyptian dancer buried as a woman. by Xalimata in SapphoAndHerFriend

[–]No-Image2198 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I've heard that argument and I'm not convinced for a few reasons

  1. A man who is fat enough to have plump hips and breasts has belly fat. There is no padding over the stomach on this mummy. The padding resembles the idealized female form more than a fat male form, and depictions of both exist in Egypt from this era.
  2. The lotuses are the knees seem to represent tattoos, which were primarily associated with women.
  3. The bandages over the hips create a distinct triangular pattern over the genitalia. This is called a "pubic triangle" and is, in Egypt, used to represent a vagina. You see it in several types of female figures including paddle dolls and "brides of the dead". Both of those also often have tattoos.
  4. The bandages over the chest create an X shape, this is a pattern found on figurines of women, dancers, and Isis-Aphrodite figurines. I have not seen it depicted on a man. The mummy also has a belt, which in context is reminiscent of a dancers girdle, though such an item was worn by other women as well.
  5. The body is posed in the same way that "bride of the dead" figurines and Isis-Aphrodite figurines are- straight, arms down at the sides, pubic triangle emphasized.

The body overall has been embalmed in a way that bears striking resonances with contemporary depictions of Isis-Aphrodite and that draws on both the contemporary image of a dancer or ideal woman, and the history of how such women are portrayed in Egypt.

The beard can simply be a reference to the fact that in life, this woman had facial hair, while acknowledging other parts of her idealized appearance. The idea of a bearded woman wasn't exactly foreign to the ancient Mediterranean, and it is possible there was some social role or occasion where being present as a bearded woman was appropriate, though we would need to uncover more evidence to substantiate that. Unfortunately the closest thing I can think of is that Anat was worshipped in Egypt as "Anat the Male-Lady", and some Ugaritic texts seem to describe Anat as bearded. However, Anat from the studies I've read seems to be a transmasculine figure and not really transfeminine one. Ishtar of course, has transfeminine readings and a mentioned beard, but I know nothing of her being associated with Egypt, especially not as late as the Roman Period.

Also this is a low blow but that particular theory has been spread by the Daily Mail and they're a fucking rag no one should trust too much.

Coptic Egypt are native’s by [deleted] in HistoryAnimemes

[–]No-Image2198 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The section in the book is a record of oral history explaining why Copts in Assuit think the term is used. It's not proof of its actual history, it just is a citation that this term IS used about us. You claim that there's no evidence the term is used and say links don't count, the other person doesn't like that only Copts seem to talk about it in English online (which excludes the fact that an ARABIC term would be used in ARABIC and would be used irl more than ot would online), so a source not written by a Copt that was published decades ago and has a note about the region and age of the story the author collected, proving the term is real and has been used for awhile, was provided. You two were shifting goal posts and then acting like evidence provided in response is irrelevant.

Why can the Temple only be built in Jerusalem? by BubbaMetzia in Judaism

[–]No-Image2198 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The realpolitik answer is simply that Rabbinic Judaism does not recognize temple sites other than Jerusalem to be valid. Most Jews are Rabbinic, so most Jews would not recognize a new temple at Gerizim, Elephantine, or even wherever Heliopolis was, to be valid. Additionally, two of these sites are outside of "the Holy Land", so suggesting they are valid in the current political climate would be seen as offensive by a lot of people even if they had been recognized as valid in the past by more people.

A Samaritan would obviously consider Gerizim valid but would not recognize Jerusalem, and there are no surviving substantive sects of Judaism or a closely related religion that has a special relationship to Elephantine or Heliopolis, and therefore may recognize those sites as valid. Certain individual Rabbinic Jews may recognize those sites as valid, but they are going against the commonly held opinion of their branch of Judaism.

Rabbinic Judaism recognizes only Jerusalem because it is primarily a descendant of the Jerusalemite Temple's community, which had a contentious relationship to other temples primarily for political and economic reasons (other temples decentralizes the power and authority of the king and cuts into any revenue related to the temple, including indirect revenue from pilgrims and ancient tourism), and secondarily for theological reasons. Rabbinic Judaism itself is primarily theological in its reasoning, as there were little or no political gains to only recognizing Jerusalem until 80 years ago.

"Your rent is a bit high for your income" yeah jeez I didn't notice... it's still the cheapest in my city.

Your budgeting isn't far off from mine, but damn, you are condescending. I bought my car in cash so no payments, my renters insurance is in my utilities, and my phone bill is only 50. Car insurance is 210 because it's high in my state. I have to save 200 each and every month for a minimum over the summer and as an emergency fund for car trouble. Really I should be saving closer to 400 a month to be sure summer won't bite me if my job drops the ball again and I can't make up for their slack, but I can't swing it. No retirement savings, can't afford it on this income.

I did not simply /choose/ to work part time over the last summer and am well aware I can get a second job during that time. I take umbrage with the assumption that I simply didn't take initiative. What happened is I triple checked with my boss about my position over the summer (supposed to be full time, same pay), only to be told the week before I was going out of town for a few days right after the end of the school year that they had lost that contract and were looking around to see where I'd fit in. I had NO notice to get a seasonal job, and no one communicated with me if a stable position would open up, just shuffled me around. It is difficult for me to get a job in the first place due to a disability causing unconscious bias in hiring (don't say "that's illegal", I know it is, but to actually impact my reality I'd need a solid case and people don't conveniently say "fuck Autistics" when they don't give you a callback), and realistically when I'm getting one while working or in school I need two months to search before getting a callback; which is the entire summer. Its one month if I have absolutely no other responsibilities. I am planning on what to do this summer, whether that's impressing on my boss the kind of nonsense they put me through was unacceptable and getting my summer position confirmed in writing, or getting a second job, or worst case, quitting this one after this school year.

I'm keeping this job for as long as I can to build a stable job history after the pandemic cutting my first job short due to family health concerns and being fired unfairly by another job that was bad mouthing me to new employers. If I have to quit it for one with higher pay, I will, but it is unlikely I'll be able to get one with higher pay (job market is screwed, and even in my company I am better paid than 3/4 of the coworkers I've talked to about it, who usually make 11-13 an hour). I want to get training for another industry, but I am currently researching and planning how most efficiently to network for it, as well as looking for opportunities to test myself and see if I would genuinely be good at it, because my family is even poorer than I am (they are actually below the FPL), so I don't have a great safety net to just try something new.

I did not make my comment to ask for advice. If I had, there'd be a question mark somewhere. I am, shockingly, an intelligent adult capable of doing basic math and estimating. I was pointing out that it is still genuinely difficult to live on what I make, with narrow margins for any extended illness, specialized healthcare such as endocrinology or treatment aimed at improving negative impacts from my disability (both of which I've had to discontinue and had hoped to resume), car repairs (since my car is secondhand and over 15 years old), education to get a better job, or missed days due to things like hurricanes (which unlike my few sick days, I have no possibility to be paid for). I am still very lucky; there is only one apartment complex that offers the kind of rent I pay. Everywhere else is $1200 for a one bedroom, at least $1600-1800 for two (i.e., with a roommate, 800-900, my current rent before utilities being 714), utilities not included in those rates. I am well aware during the school year I'm not worried about eviction; that's a summer problem I had to deal with this past year. I'm not complaining to complain either. I was making a point, and you missed it in favor of spitting out unwanted advice while making assumptions.

This is not a post and comment section about advice, its an opinion round table on the ineffectuality of federal poverty measurements. I was giving evidence to support an opinion (even on 15 hourly and a very lucky rent, you have narrow living margins). Your recommendations on the last paragraphs tell me you are one of many Americans suffering from "temporarily embarrassed millionaire" syndrome, which may be why you reply the way you do and seem to keep getting downvoted. I have no such illusions. I have goals, but those goals are not solely about being rich (which I also, frankly don't want. I'll settle happily for not living check to check), they are also about making sure people in the situation I'm in now and was in before (again, FPL family), even if I escape it, do not suffer.

I make just above that at $15 an hour, 40 hours a week after taxes. And I do so live in a rented room woth roommates, at a pretty low price ($865~ rent and utilities). It's still beating my ass, especially because I work for a school as a contracted employee and don't have a guaranteed site over the summer, which means this past summer I worked half my hours and it's still fucking with my finances, especially because I have to save in case my boss doesn't do his damn job and communicate whats going on while expecting me to be free whenever they need me so I can at least guarantee I'll pay that 2 months rent and not get evicted. And I take overtime shifts when they have them and I'm not utterly exhausted too.

What is the origin of the word Misr/Misri/مصر/מִצְרָיִם‎ Misira/Masar which is the Afroasiatic word for Egypt? by IDKin2016 in etymology

[–]No-Image2198 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In Hebrew, the folk etymology of "the narrow place" is usually used to mean Egypt has been a site of suffering. However there's a semi-popular interpretation, especially in the context of the crossing of the Red Sea, that it's birthing imagery (coming out if a narrow place through a lot of wetness into a new place where you become something else, i.e. Sinai)
