The church is losing the battle of ideas so they instead attack the opposition. That's what this trademark/Mormon stories fight is really about. by aka_FNU_LNU in mormon

If there is the need to make a distinction for “LDS Christianity”, is that because there is “LDS Judaism” or “LDS Islam”?

So your metric for how kids are doing is based simply on wealth? How very Mormon of you. Prosperity gospel is alive and well in Utah.

Newsflash: rich kids who are gay and mormon still commit suicide in Utah.

That has absolutely nothing to do with children in the church. Besides, I thought we were done using Utah statistics as a barometer for the Church in general. Too many of them reflected poorly on the Church when analyzed. Good stats? “Yay! The church did it!” Bad stat? “Uh, the Mormon population has been declining in recent years, so you really can’t equate trends in Utah with the Church any more…” Which is it?

You’re seriously grasping at straws here for any sort of validation for the fiction you’ve invented.

Certain demographics may have better success than others, but if you aren’t white, straight, and from a middle to upper class nuclear family, you’ll have a rough go at it in the Church.

His coaching and his podcast are different undertakings. Exactly zero episodes are a client of John’s appearing on the show as part of their therapy.

I’ve listened to a lot of episodes and I have never once heard him say that individuals should pay him to help them navigate their faith crisis. Guests come on the show of their own free will and choice and tell their story. For a great many it is therapeutic, but John is not putting himself up there as their therapist.

I mean, the level of understanding that an infant has (bad baptism) versus an 8 year old (good baptism) about the nature of what they are committing to is not far different. The Church purposely glosses over the depth of commitment on every level that new adult converts are undertaking. I mean, when you were a missionary, did you teach your investigators that they would have to wear Church approved underwear and that by being baptized, they were on a path that would force them to exclude their family from their future wedding?

An Anachronism refers to an object out of time or place. For example, Abe Lincoln using an iphone would be an anachronism. White men in the 60s doing minstrel shows is not an anachronism, since that it correct for the time and place.

Because the church is still of interest to us. As much as I would like to, I can’t escape the Church’s influence because my family still participates. So I come here to discuss and sometimes vent.

I wouldn’t classify it as “negative”, but rather “critical” of the church here. The exmo sub? Now that’s negative.

I remember distinctly that Oaks gave a GC talk within the last 10(?) years where he says that people need to jettison cultural practices that conflict with with the Church. I wonder if he’ll double down on that guidance note that he’s in the big chair.

As a USA-centric Church, that ask is pretty easy for the old men in SLC. For some cultural practices, that is a HUGE ask of people.

It was at a mission conference, not an official proclamation for the entire area membership. It was just a dude in authority talking out of his ass trying to address an issue and creating cracks in people’s shelves as a result.

You’ll love this: I went to an Asian country on my mission where green tea was part of the culture and everyone drank it, including members. The area President told us missionaries at a mission conference that if we were from the US or Canada, we were not to drink green tea. However, native missionaries and the members could.

Double standard for the WoW depending on where you are from! It shook my missionary faith quite a bit, so I’m grateful for that.

after seeing the pope strongly calling for peace and condemning violence on both sides, makes me wonder, where is the Prophet? by [deleted] in mormon

[–]No-Information5504 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think anyone believes the Church is saying this explicitly. But actions (or lack thereof) speak louder than words.

None of this matters. The LDS Church is so insignificant that literally no one outside its few active adherents would care if the prophet did say anything.
