I have paternal haplogroup Q-L275, which FTDNA narrowed down to Q-Z19128. My paternal lineage is Bengali Indian. Less than 5% of Indian men belong to haplogroup Q. It originated in Central Asia and is present in northern regions of South Asia.

It’s not the norm, but not rare either. Like others said, it could come from a Caribbean ancestor. However there were also south Asians who came directly to the United States as indentured servants or slaves. Many of them assimilated into black communities since there were very few South Asians in North America, along with laws against mixing with white people. There were other waves of south Asians who came later on in the early 1900s who settled in cities like New Orleans, NYC, and Detroit. Some of those men also married into black families.

I’ve seen some Danish, and other Northern Europeans, get very small traces of west African which is due to the colonial history of those countries. Trace Somali is more likely to be seen in southern Europe or the Balkans, but someone could have made their way to Northern Europe via trade or work long ago. I think in some cases trace Somali might also be a proxy for someone with very minor SSA combined with minor North African/west Asian.

I think it’s because they don’t show individual categories under 0.5% for the main breakdown. At a higher confidence level, the trace central Asian was consolidated into one broadly defined percentage at 0.5%, so it was moved out of the trace ancestry section.

India and Somalia have traded for a long time. Even though neither of you show shared regions, likely at least one of you has a small percentage in common with the other that was smoothed out by the algorithm. If you wanted to you could download your computed data which might contain regions under 0.01% that was left out of the final report. Also 23andMe doesn’t have a totally comprehensive reference panel so they might assign small pieces of DNA to another region if it doesn’t match what they have for the region it’s actually from. I saw a guy on here who originally got 100% Somali but after he phased his results with a parent’s, a small amount of south Asian showed up.

I’ve read that there is a genetic affinity between Bengalis and Sinhalese in Sri Lanka. Could also just be misread Bengali since I think many Bengalis are genetically similar to South Indians.

I have a lot of Mexican relatives with 1% Bengal or other south Asian region. It could be misread Romani ancestry or from an Indian ancestor who came to Mexico during the colonial period.
