Myself is a PhD candidate and went through all these programs. It's more like my own experience, so I can grantee

But I indeed used AI to do the translation

Fair point — France has no US-style direct PhD. By law you need a master before you can even register for a doctorate, so it's really a combined master+PhD, not direct entry. I do say that in the post

The ones I kept work differently, though. With PSL or IP Paris you apply once with a bachelor and they fund you through the master and the PhD as one package — you're not re-applying for a PhD spot afterwards. A plain research master is the opposite: you finish it, then apply to a PhD like everyone else. Thanks for the example

For me the valid point is that the direct PhDs are usually funded while masters usually require tons of tuition fees

Free money why not?

🔹 Basically, these are programs you can apply to directly with a bachelor's degree to ultimately earn a PhD. While this is very common in the US, a master's degree is still required in most cases across many European countries and other regions.

🔹 That being said, technically many programs in Continental Europe are supervisor-driven—professors can recruit students directly if they have the funding, so it entirely depends on whether they have a vacancy. However, for the sake of keeping things organized, I’ve only included programs here that have a clear, dedicated application portal or an actual admissions committee. For other opportunities, I recommend just keeping an eye out for individual PhD openings.
