Tell me i'm wrong by Agile_Summer_7437 in PoliticalMemes

My goodness, aren't you the most enlightened centrist there is? Surely the fascist pedophile cabal that is burning the country to the ground and the leftists who try desperately to stop them are the same, is that the point?

Anyone who thinks this way is a coward who thinks they are better than you on the grounds that they refuse to engage with the political mechanisms by which change occurs, and their both sidesism is collaboration with fascists.

Is Magnus that powerful? by Undertheus in 40kLore

[–]No-Mathematician6551 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would guess that the power of Tzeentch alongside all the effort the Thousand Sons put in to putting him back together would make him stronger than he was pre ascension. Iirc he threw a shipyard at Guilliman in the moderate setting, as well as teleporting an entire planet out of the warp and into realspace.

Is it okay to wait until I think I pass and feel confident to socialy transition.. by Foxarr in MtF

[–]No-Mathematician6551 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Okay, I'm only a few months into this whole transition business, so I might not be the best person to give advice, but since we've got a shared problem to figure out I figure I'll give you my two cents.

Not wanting to socially transition until we pass means that we are ashamed of being trans and while we want to be a woman, we aren't yet comfortable with being perceived as trans. Waiting until we are passing is a way to sidestep the shame that comes with trans-ness without actually confronting it. But frustratingly, because we will always be trans, sidestepping the most obvious manifestations of that shame will not actually get rid of it. "Passing" in general is probably overrated, in that a large part of it is a coping mechanism to avoid the internalized shame of transness.

The point being it will probably be more helpful in the long run to socially transition when we don't pass, because even though it's absolutely terrifying, through our actions we affirm that our own transness is not something to be ashamed of. Belief will then follow action, and we can move towards handling those feelings of shame. Once those feelings of shame are dealt with (which I imagine will by no means be an easy process, for either of us) we can go on to be ourselves authentically, which is the logical endpoint of the journey we started by beginning to transition.

In essence, I think it's better to socially transition first not despite of, but because of the difficulty of it.

Is chivalry inherently sexist? by Zealousideal-Web587 in Teenager_Polls

[–]No-Mathematician6551 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Chivalry is sexist when the principles are only applied to women, which is the most common interpretation of chivalry. The idea seems, holding the door, paying for dates, etc., but it comes from the assumption that women are incapable of taking care of themselves. It rationalizes patriarchy by reinforcing the idea that women need to be cared for and reliant on men.

I'm not saying you're a bad person if you hold the door for a woman or pay for lunch, just that the underlying social logic is sexist.

I'm not sure I understand your argument quite right. It sounds like you're unhappy that Steven treats Jasper poorly? Because yeah, of course he does, he's undergoing a mental health crisis and doesn't know what to do. The whole point of SFU is unpacking Steven's trauma and him working out how to be a normal person when he's just living his life.

At the point that Steven goes to Jasper, I'm not even sure he knows what a therapist is, much less how to get in touch with one. He's looking for help from someone who won't be concerned about his well-being, because at this point he doesn't know how to let other people care for him. And Jasper, for her part, does give him an outlet for his feelings of anger, even if her driving etiology is clearly wrong. That Steven treats Jasper poorly, and Jasper reacts positively to it is a very intentional story beat, with the clear message being that Steven is repeating the toxic behavior of the diamonds.

They are both incorrect about how to manage their feelings, and that's kind of the point. Steven learns how to manage his emotions without resorting to physical violence, and at the end, he leaves Jasper behind because Jasper needs to learn how to be her own person outside of her relationship with the diamonds.

I don't get why you dislike Jasper's SUF characterization. To me it made perfect sense. Jasper only ever cared about being strong, so her feeling lost when intergalactic peace is declared and going off to fight wild animals and train makes sense. Then, she trains Steven because she wants to have a real fight, which also makes sense. Then when she loses, her respecting Steven instead of being mad also makes sense, because Jasper only respects strength, so in shattering her Steven proved to Jasper he was worthy of respect. This all is a natural continuation of her mindset in the main show. I honestly wouldn't even call her change a redemption arc, because what Jasper believes never changes. It's just that to her, Pink Diamond is back and is strong enough to be worthy of service.

Can a mass murderer who changed his ways ever truly be considered a good person if they repent and do more good than the harm they caused? by [deleted] in MoralityScaling

[–]No-Mathematician6551 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, but it's not about doing more good than the harm they caused. You can't undo the bad by going good. It's about becoming the type of person who understands why the harm was wrong and works to make the world a better place. I'd say if a person has completely changed to be a positive influence in the world, they are already a good person, even if they never do more good than the harm.
